I am surprised to read several negative reviews. It's definitely not a place to go if you don't like large portions and huge menus!I went to Shanghai Family Restaurant with a family who had been dining here regularly. They were kind enough to bring me when they heard my family is from Shanghai. The restaurant is large, cutely decorated, spaciously laid out. We had excellent customer service. They sat us right away, made dish recommendations, brought our dishes quickly, checked on us more than once, had the perfect amount of small talk, and packed our leftovers at the table. The restaurant is a "family" place that is not fancy or upscale. You can bring kids, be loud, be casual. It's clean, but not TOO clean, if you know what I mean. I didn't knock off a star for that because it isn't classified under that type of venue. Shanghai Family Restaurant is ALL ABOUT THE FOOD! The best measurement of a good restaurant: when you are already planning your next visit before you're even done eating! I did this when I was eating their "lions head" meatball dish over rice. Yummy in my tummy! That is my favorite Shanghainese dish. I am strategizing my next visit!

When I miss Shanghai food I will come here. And I've been here almost weekly for more than 10 years Consistently authentic flavor , very nice home-style service. And large menu with lots of optionsMy favorite - classic juicy dumplings, pan fried bun and noodle and rice dishes as well as roasted duck. Every time I bring friends over they love it too

I'm not yet convince that this place can be my to go Shanghainese restaurant. Pan fried bun - Very good. One of the better one I've had. Lots of soup inside, crispy bottom. Seaweed fried fish fillet - this one was a bit disappointed. It's possible the fish was not very fresh. Bit fishy.Veggie rice - love it that is got crispy crust, flavor wise is not as good as some. It's probably the salty meat lack flavor. Still need to try other dishes to know more.

Shanghai Family Restaurant is one of the Chinese restaurants in the complex. They have fairly extensive menu and good option for Chinese takeout. Generally I find their food much too salty and oily. For the food: The best dish is the noodle soup with shredded pork and ji zhai. The broth is tasty and noodle has a nice chew, but they're fairly stingy with the toppings. The salty Soymilk is covered in hot chili oil - if you're into that, that's great. Otherwise tell them to leave it out. The fried Chinese doughnuts is nice and crispy.

I've come here for several large group occasions, and the quality of the food has been pretty consistent. The xiaolongbao and shengjianbao are staples and must-get items at the beginning. You can start off with some cold dishes like malantou, osmanthus sugar lotus, and smoked fish. The eel, lion head, and rice cake are Shanghainese classics that are worth getting. Most recently we were recommended the Peking duck, and though it was a bit unusual to see that item at a Shanghainese restaurant, we went with it and it was pretty good.

This is one of the very few places I consistently come back to for food. If you want classic no frills Shanghai fare this is the restaurant to go to. The service is quite fast especially if you go during off peak hrs. Some highlights: -Xlb: filled to the brim with soup-Shanghai Pan Fried Dumplings: similar to XLB but quite fluffy and packed with meat-steamed fish with scallions and ginger: it absolutely melts in your mouth like butter-Shanghai Mustard Greens and House marinated pork: salty, savory, and exceptionalDefinitely come here with a big group so you can try multiple dishesPrice: $-$$Overall: 10/10

I ordered pan fried pork dumpling from here via DoorDash, so I can only speak for this one particular food. I've been on a mission to find the best pan fried pork dumpling in the Bay Area, and I have been to almost 10 different restaurants for their pan fried dumplings. Shanghai family restaurant is ranked #2 in my book. They have the perfect crispy bottoms, even after sitting in the container for at least 30min before I was able to eat them, the bottoms were still crispy!!!! Amazing!!!! I took 1 star off because despite the fact that they have tons of juice inside, the flavor is lacking. Dumpling Home in SF has the best filling flavor and Shanghai Family restaurant has the best bottoms. Can they just mix the 2 together and give me some perfect Sheng Jian? Lol

a little hole in the wall Shanghainese place! i love coming here for their peking duck combo! its roughly $80 for the sliced duck, sauce, wrap, and a big bowl of duck bone soup (it does take 30min to make so call before hand) i also recommend getting either the pork soup dumpling or pan fried ones! its pretty empty during the weekdays so no wait! the auntie here is also super nice and smiley

The food is above average, but the prices are too high. Service is friendly. It's in an open table area in the Ranch 99 shopping center in Cupertino.
