Genji has consistently been a great place to take a group of 8 people for delicious teppanyaki style Japanese food for the 30+ years I have been coming here. It's pretty much the exact same for all these years with a couple of minor exceptions. We started with some cocktails while we waited for our party to arrive. The Washington Apple is a fantastic choice, not too sweet or overwhelming apple flavor. The bar staff was kind enough to give my kids extra maraschino cherries for their soft drinks. The dinner service was fantastic and the food was delicious. I had the steak and scallops and shared it with my wife who got the steak and lobster. I regret getting the NY steak because it was so thin, probably due to shrinkflation. The steak was delicious but I highly recommended getting the filet because it's thicker and can be cooked medium rare. The show is always great and the overall value for what you get is excellent. In all fairness shrinkflation is real and impacts all businesses. However, I would rather pay another 5-10 dollars for a properly cut steak. The NY steak was literally a tad bit thicker than a carne asada which is a little embarrassing. The prices are good for what you get, but for god sake, raise the price and give us a properly cut steak.Would be 5 stars if the steak was thicker like it was in the past.

A decent Teppanyaki place that is probably saved by the quality of service.Ambiance**Simple, with outdated decor, neighborhood restaurant with a decent sized bar area while waiting for your table. Feels similar to an outdated Chinese buffet restaurant. Dining area split into 3 sections with multiple 8-top tables in each. If your party is less than 8, you may be sharing table with another party. Maybe just a coincidence but literally all other parties that were there were celebrating birthdays. The waitress were kind of surprised, like "No birthdays? How about anniversary? celebrating anything? No? Really just for family dinner?"Service*****This is where the place shines, at least they tried. I thought things were going to be in the gutter as our reservation time didn't seem to matter. We were there 15 minutes early but did not get seated until 40 minutes past rsvp time. Took our orders within a few minutes but then while they came out with the salad starter fairly fast, they seemed to slow roll the appetizer. When we were done with it, the waitress came to apologize that the chef will be late to start the main course. Thankfully they acknowledged and tried to make up for it. We got a couple appetizer plates comp-ed (tempura, edamame). Throughout the service the waiters/waitresses were attentive, taking out dirty plates, giving new chopsticks, refilling water cups. The chef did typical teppanyaki place show with utensils play, the onion tower fire, etc.Food***Tempura batter were thick and soft, not Panko bread crumbs style crunchy tempura. White rice were both undercooked (hard inside) and a bit mushy where it felt like eating rice paste. If you asked for fried rice (+$5), it was not as bad. We got steak, calamari, and shrimp. They were ok, not bad, not great. A lot of butter and a bit oily.Cost***For the quality of food, I think it is a bit much. But these days with $20 burgers, I guess it's par for the course at about $150 (pre tax/tips) for 3 set meals + appetizer not including the comp-ed ones. I don't think the appetizers would be worth it if not comped.Tipping Practice ****Paper bill, no tap pay. Recommended tips amount on the bill starting from 18%, pre-tax amount. No additional service charge line items.

Went to check out House of Genji on a Saturday evening with my husbands family. We called in for a reservation and was able to do so. We just waited about 10 minutes before we were seated. We were able to order our food right away. Appetizers were served first with the salad and soup. The salad was okay but the soup was pretty well seasoned and tasted good. Our chef was friendly but he did not provide a show..... there was nothing really entertaining happening when he was cooking our food. But the food was good but not amazing. I've had a lot of different other teppanyaki spots and even though this one is a gem in San Jose, it's not the best. The meat and shrimp quality was good but I felt it was not properly seasoned. All in all the food was good but overall it was not a great experience.

This was my first time at a teppanyaki restaurant. I called the day before to make a reservation. The day of when we arrived, we were asked to sit in a waiting area. The waiting area was sticky feeling and gloomy. My friends and I ordered a drink. The drinks were very average tasting and poured into plastic pint cups. After we were seated, someone took our order. As we waited, we got to see a couple of fire shows at the nearby stations. When we got the tempura it tasted like tempura from any other restaurant, nothing special. During our dinner portion, the chef seemed to have known or recognize someone else at our table. He was chatting it up with him while cooking instead of interacting or explaining the pictures he'd make with the food. I thought that was slightly off putting. When I tasted the food, it tasted slightly on the bland side so I had to request extra sauces on the side. Overall, the restaurant seemed a little outdated and the food was nothing memorable I would come back for.

This place has been around forever. It's our go to place for birthday celebrations. You get a show and good consistent food. You can opt for a combo or one item dish. You get steam rice or pay more for fried rice, veggies salad soup and dessert depending on combo u select. Did I mention free birthday meal as well with 3 other paying adult entree. It's a hit or miss on the cook they give u as some are more entertaining than others. My choice of meal is always the New York steak cook to my liking. Would be much better if they offered ribeye steak.

I've been coming here for years, and it's one of my favorite places to eat! The food is always delicious, and the teppanyaki experience--watching the chefs cook right in front of you--is so much fun. My kids absolutely love it here, too! We've even celebrated my birthday at this restaurant, and every visit has been fantastic. Great food, great service, and a great time every time! Highly recommend!

We went to Genji @ San Jose for dinner last night. It's located in an old building that has a retro vibe, like we were back in the 80s. The place was very busy and lively, with a lot of people celebrating their birthdays. We enjoyed hearing the happy songs and cheers throughout the night. The food was decent, but not outstanding. We ordered the beef and shrimp combo for $42 and the seafood combo for $54. The portions were generous and the ingredients were fresh, but the sauces were a bit bland and the presentation was not very appealing. We expected more from a Japanese restaurant. The service was friendly and attentive, though. Our waitress was very helpful and patient with our questions and requests. She brought us our food and drinks quickly and checked on us regularly. She also gave us a complimentary dessert for our anniversary, which was very sweet of her.Overall, we had a good time at Genji, but we were not blown away by the food. It's a nice place to go for a casual and fun night out, but not for a special occasion or a fine dining experience.

Came to celebrating my grandmas birthday with two other relatives (total of 4). For birthdays (with ID provided), the bday person gets a free (7oz) NY hibachi. Overall, the food was ok, nothing special. I think I might even enjoy Benihana more... however I'm giving this place a 4 instead of 3 stars because of how special the staff made my grandma feel on her 87th birthday. She was beaming and laughing the entire time. At the end, they brought out a little bowl of ice cream with a candle and even took my emails photo together and gave it to us printed out. The experience was heart warming.

Mediocre at best.If this is the only hibachi place in town then I guess it makes sense that people would come here. The sauces and green tea seemed watered down and lacked flavor. The tempura was ok but even the tempura sauce was watered down and lacked flavor. Tempura sauce is typically strong enough to taste and theirs was not. I ordered the filet mignon & lobster tail and upgraded my steamed rice for fried rice (an extra $5). Everything was bland. Sure they use butter but it's flavorless. No seasonings were used, barely any salt. The lobster tail was the only thing that had flavor. My filet cut was perfect too. I was so sad that it lacked flavor and the dipping sauces didn't help enhance it. I took most of it to-go so I could doctor it up at home. Since everything was bland I decided to skip the ice cream that is included with the meals. We had a party of 7 and wanted to dine somewhere nice before partaking in the local holiday activities. Everyone was disappointed in the food.
