GAO is an upscale Vietnamese restaurant located in the Sunset District of SF. It is pricier, but the portions are big to share. It is located on the corners of Irving Street and 20th Avenue. Parking is very challenging. Gao has been on my bucket list to dine. We came here to celebrate my mom's birthday. We ordered a few appetizers and several entrees. We started off with Banh Beo, Pho Rolls and Snails. Banh Beo were good, Pho Rolls were okay and Snails were pretty darn good. Mom loved the light snail broth. It's rare to find a restaurant that serves this appetizer. Our entrees included:Shaking Beef with garlic noodles - 5 StarsVermicelli Beef Bowl with egg rolls and shrimp - 5 StarsFried Rice - 5 StarsBun Cha - 4 StarsBBH - 4 StarsSoft Shell Crab Bun Rieu - 5 StarsService was quick and friendly.

TL DR: Beautiful ambiance, wide collection of drinks, but more expensive than other options in SF for pho. After a long day of exploring the city, I was craving a warm dinner. This was one of the few places opened with pretty good reviews. Ambiance: Well lit, clean, and great ambiance. Great for dates, solo adventures, or groups. A great looking bar area too! 5/5Service: Friendly staff. Answered questions, attentive to water refills. 5/5 Food: There are a wide range of options but I opted for the Beef Stew Pho. Great flavors, a generous portion. The meat was cooked to perfection. Was this the best bowl of pho I've ever had, no but was it good... absolutely! 4/5 You pay for the experience and overall quality of the restaurant which is why I believe the base price is higher than competitors.

I came here for dinner for my BiL's bday. The food presentation was mainstream, but was over seasoned. Restaurant isn't family friendly with broken straps on all the high chairs. Either one seat has ALL male clips or the other seat has ALL female clips. The San Mateo location is much better than the SF location. Music too loud to enjoy the meal.Worst of all at end of meal saw a cockroach crawling along the wall behind us while eating. Not very appetizing......

This is definitely a spot to come with a group of 4-5 people to try a few dishes and split the cost. We split one bowl of very flavorful pho, but it was the price of 2 meals at a nearby pho spot. Their takes on Viet cuisine are modern, big and bold with flavors to match. The service was very attentive and we enjoyed the meal!

This location has much more seating than their San Mateo one. The decor and art are pretty, and the restaurant is very clean as whole. We try to go when they open, as the wait can get very long. There is a cute bar area as well, that's perfect for their cocktails and to eat (but probably better for parties of 1-2). That area gets packed as well with people waiting for tables.I've tried many dishes here and haven't come across one that I haven't liked, but I do have go-tos: beef carpaccio, bún, garlic noodles, pho, shrimp rolls, 5 spice chicken, coconut coffee, Ube coffee. The service has been on point, and food very flavorful. Definitely my favorite Viet spot in SF.

Well executed and delicious food and drinks. It gets very busy here so plan ahead to get on the waitlist via yelp or in person. They have a tablet for sign up and check-in. There's a bar and wait area with good cocktails and japanese whiskey. It is a two floor restaurant and the kitchen is semi-open to observation. Its giving a mix modern and industrial vibes with a dash or viet culture.Employees are quick on their feet and hustling away with friendly hospitality. They are actively cleaning and rearranging tables to accommodate the next group of patron. The Coconut Caphe and Lychee Coconut freeze is yummy. The Gao Fried Rice is al really good and sharable. Bone Marrow is sinful but impressive that it's part of the dish. Beef Carpaccio is made with waygu and it's refreshing when you get a mix of beef and all of that generous toppings in one bite. I only wish this dish was served as an appetizer like requested. The wrap and roll dish was good but I got too full and lazy to wrap after eating the fried rice. LolJust know you are spending a bit more here than your typical vietnamese restaurant because it is elevated vietnamese food cooked with delicious ingedients. Parking is hard even with a parking lot in the back of the restaurant. Honestly, I can't wait to return and try other items their menu. They have a great menu selection. And I not longer have to travel to their San Mateo location.

Awesome presentation, reasonably large portions, very nice service. Banh xeo is off the hook. I've got mixed feelings about the Gaozilla - it's audacious. It's a true party starter. I'm not gonna lie - I didn't like the broth. It lacked depth of flavor considering all the awesome meats in it. It's also missing your usual sides like the bean sprouts, basil, and things that would balance out a rich taste.Based on what everyone else ordered, I'd have more of a fun time ordering the starters and rice plates and even the classic pho to share instead.

Overall, great service and appreciated the attentiveness to food allergies. Beautiful ambiance. Amazing and friendly staff always. Personally was not a fan of the bone marrow cracker. While it did look and remind me of bone marrow, it had too much of a rice cake taste and maybe took away the star of the show- which should have been the bone marrow. The 5-spice chicken would be another skip for me, but might just be I have chicken and garlic noodle so much I didn't see a wow factor in it.As for my go to... the coffee-coconut freeze! I sometimes go to this location or the San Mateo just to grab this to go. Might have to try the passion fruit coconut freeze next time. This time around I really loved the mussels, fried rice, and Banh hoi deluxe. We also ordered Banh Cuon which I didn't get to try. As for Bo Ne, at times I feel like I could whip up something like this at home but my friend really enjoyed the steak while others preferred it to be cooked more throughly. Pate was good and fresh and everything paired well with the bread and runny yolk. Looking to try their pho, tiger prawn dishes, and scallops next time! While there was no wait due to the Super Bowl, very happy to see that both locations have the option to hop on the waitlist via Yelp!

2/7/25 - My friends and I have been wanting to go here and finally did! It had soooo many iconic Vietnamese dishes like bánh khọt, trạo tôm, nem nướng etc. The staff were so attentive despite being busy and worked so hard to answer our questions and help us! The restaurant was also decorated so beautifully too. We got bánh khọt, nem nướng on sugar cane, and fish sauce chicken for starters. All were sooo delicious! We also got their phở and five spice chicken dry phở. Their coconut coffee was pretty good too! I'd recommend going here to anyone! Excellent experience!

After seeing so many instagram posts on this restaurant we decided to give it a try. The ambiance and decorations of this restaurant is nice. The staff are very fast and efficient. They are constantly refilling your water glasses. We ordered big rib BBH and 5 spice chicken pho. The rib in the BBH was very tasty and tender. But the broth was underwhelming and bland. It does not have the wonderful umami fishy flavor that BBH is supposed to have. Also it was not spicy at all. I had to ask for extra of pure fish sauce, shrimp paste and crushed red chilies to make it edible. They give you plenty of meat but not enough noodles. The 5 chicken spice pho was ok. It was bland and the broth was more on the oily side. The serving of chicken was huge. The chicken actually tasted good and was tender. We would like to return to try other items in the future. We might want to avoid ordering noodle soups and try other dishes instead.
