We came here with some friends who highly recommended this place, and they were not wrong! Everything on the menu was delicious and at a great, great price. The four of us spent just shy of $300 for a meal that we could have easily spent $600 on at any other Japanese restaurant. I loved the sashimi bowl and in particular the sweet shrimp. I also loved the fresh scallop! All the seafood was super fresh and the presentation of all the dishes were spectacular as well. My husband and I are already talking about going back again!

We live close by and have been eager for this open for quite some time ever since they had a poster by the window last year. We got there at opening on Sat and it was empty, we were the only table during our dining experience. Nonetheless, I would highly encourage people to check this spot out - very pleasant vibes, clean, spacious, music not too loud, amazing friendly staff. We ordered:- Side of mushroom (5/5): simply fantastic, our favorite thing of the night, so much umami. Our kid loved this so much my wife and I barely got any, should've ordered two!- Nigiri set 10pcs (3/5): definitely not "extra large" pieces they claim to be, fairly small even more so than a standard nigiri. Fish were fresh, but thinly cut layers over rice which, I don't think should be used for nigiri. The rice just falls apart. - Moriawase (4/5): beautiful presentation, the rice at the bottom of the fish works much better than in nigiri since they don't need to hold to a structure or getting picked up together. The rice in here was actually warmer too, quite pleasant. All the seafood was very good, wish they served more than just one shrimp or one unagi piece. Seaweed that came with was very good and crunchy. They served complimentary sparkling water and let me try their house beer before needing to commit. Overall the service and ambiance stood out, next time would try more sides and inaris. I hope this place can last!

After a long day, my partner and I needed a quick dinner pick-up, so we decided to try this place. We ordered their 10-piece nigiri set, chicken karaage, glazed unagi Inari, and silky maguro roll. Their 10-piece nigiri set was decent. The fish selection was chu-toro (medium fatty tuna), sake (salmon), kanpachi (amberjack), hotate (scallop), and tamago (egg omelet). You got two pieces of each. All the above tasted good, as I did not pick up on any fishiness, and the tamago was not bland. The rice did not taste like sushi rice; it was rather bland. I suppose it's a different style that did not align with my preference. The highlight was the chicken karaage. It was juicy and not oily at all. The flavor was perfect, and I would order it from here again. My partner enjoyed her glazed unagi inari and silky maguro roll but made the same comment about the rice. Overall, it was a pretty good place to grab a quick dinner. Obviously, things can be different if we ate in vs. taking out, but given that their chicken Karaage was the standout to us, it's hard to give a full 5-star rating to a sushi-oriented eatery. My partner and I definitely will be back if we are in that area to eat in.

The Roll is a small place that has a very clean, sleek look and has prices that don't break the bank. I felt the inari was a bit too sweet, but other than that, everything was great and visually pleasing. Very happy to have another option in the SOMA neighborhood and look forward to returning.

These days, it seems to be style over substance. It's like some want to blow up on socials for aesthetics and vibes rather than serving good tasting food. Don't get me wrong, I like a pretty restaurant and good vibes but I'm not there to munch on hanging wisteria plants. The Roll has nailed both style and substance....Not only do they create some of the most beautiful dons, it's also delicious and affordable for the city's standards. Soft opening this week is The Roll's first brick & mortar (they started as a pop-up at Sushi Hakko in The Marina/Cow Hollow). This comes from Mins Group (Sushi Hakko, Sushi Sato, Sushi Hon, Jang, Dragon Horse, and Dento). Currently open for takeout and indoor dining. Rezzies on OpenTable. M E N USpecialty: Kaisen Don (sashimi rice bowl) + Futomaki (fat maki roll). They also serve yubuchobap (yubu inari sushi), nigiri, donburi w/ cooked items (curry + unagi), and sides (potato salad, karaage, etc). Beer and sake available. F O O D* Kama Nitsuke: Braised Fish Collar ($15): https://tinyurl.com/5d742cz7Classic Japanese dish of braised fish in a savory sweet soy based sauce. While I enjoyed the flavor, the fish was little drier than anticipated. However, the rich marbling of the salmon collar is forgiving so it was still tender. * Futomaki - The Roll (Signature): Tuna, Salmon, Amberjack, Deep Fried Kanikama, Avocado, Cucumber, Takuan, Shiso, Tamago ($18): https://tinyurl.com/y38vaz2n- Includes housemade wakame salad Pretty mosaic consisting of a trio of fish, crunchy crab stick, tangy pickled radish, sweet omelet (tamago), and buttery avocado. A perfect medley of balanced savory, sweet, tangy, and umami flavors. I appreciated the heavy ratio of filling to lightly seasoned sushi rice. To nitpick, it could have been rolled tighter (started to unravel when picked up with a chopstick). * Kaisen Don - The Moriawase (Signature): Tuna, Salmon, Amberjack, Uni, Scallop, Amaebi (w/ fried head), Ikura, Unagi, Snow Crab, Tobiko, Veggies ($38): https://tinyurl.com/5x4janj6Artfully crafted sashimi bowl that's just as delicious, as it was beautiful. A layer of slightly warm sushi rice (seasoned w/ aged vinegar blend) is topped with an array of sashimi and seafood slices. You're also provided with three sheets of crisp nori to make your own handrolls: https://tinyurl.com/jphpkfu5Everything was fresh and good quality. It's deceptively filling with about 12 pieces of fish/seafood so we had to pack most of the futomaki to go. * Black Sesame Mochi Brownie (complimentary for the soft opening): https://tinyurl.com/4s3hn9fbSourced from Buoy (Hayes Valley), the brownie was moist with QQ chewy pieces of mochi and intense nutty black sesame flavor. Very lightly sweet. S E R V I C EFriendly, warm, and attentive staff. We had early rezzies so prompt food service.A M B I A N C EModern industrial minimalism with six tables and three window counter seats. No sushi bar. P A R K I N GDifficult metered parking. Nearest lot is a block away at 301 6th street. Overall, in a city littered with sushi restos, The Roll is bringing something new with their beautifully crafted kaisen don and futomaki. Extra plus for affordability.

We are huge fans of Sushi Hakko and therefore had to try out The Roll! All of the food was incredibly delicious (same high quality as Sushi Hakko), portions were incredibly generous for the price, the service was top notch and the ambiance felt both sleek and inviting. Could not recommend this place more. We will be back!

Glad to try this spot within their first week of opening! Somehow I opened Instagram and this was a recommended spot to try. Right when I saw their Yubu (or Inari) with toppings, I told my friend we must go! I've been looking for a spot in SF having Yubu and this place did not disappoint at all.The servers were really friendly and introduced us to their menu and explained everything they have to offer especially letting us know their seafood are delivered fresh every day. They were constantly filling up our waters and asked us how was the food. It was so good!I really loved the ambiance as it was dim and playing chill music. They have a decent amount of tables, but I know sooner or later they'll start getting busier. Now, to what we ordered:- 3-piece yubu set:Sunset Salmon Yubu (Kelp Cured Salmon, Yuzu Kosher Dressing, Yuzu Tobiko)Scallop Yubu (Fresh Scallop, Mentaiko Mayo, Black Wasabi Tobiko)Silky Maguro Yubu (Bluefin Tuna, Kizami Wasabi Mayo)- 5-piece yubu set:Silky Maguro YubuSnow Crab Yubu (Snow Crab, Kanikama, Mayonnaise, Orange Tobiko)Sunset Salmon YubuCorn Cheese Yubu (Fresh Corn w/ Cheese)Yakiniku Yubu (Japanese Marinated Beef w/ Quail Egg)- 2× Uni Ikura Yubu (Uni, Soy Cured King Salmon Roe)- Futomaki: The Roll (Tuna, Salmon, Amberjack, Deep Fried Kanikama, Avocado, Cucumber, Takuan, Shiso, Tamago)- Karaage Curry Don (Homemade Japanese Fried Chicken, Beef, Potatoes, Carrots, Onions)All these dishes were made with fresh ingredients. The fish were all melting in my mouth. You really can't go wrong with anything you order on their menu!I can't wait to go back to try their Kaisen Don & Fatty Tuna Yubu!

This place is perfect for date night. The ambiance is very intimate and elegant and the menu features a lot of high quality and beautiful plates. We ordered the sunset salmon inari, Kama nitsuke, the moriawase, and we also ordered some sake. The sake was amazing, and paired perfectly with the dishes. I unfortunately forgot the name and I can't locate it on the website--but it was very good. The inari was very delicious and paired well with the Kama nitsuke which had an incredible flavor to it. I would honestly love to see that as part of a main dish because it was just that good! The moriawase was absolutely beautiful and I really loved the plating. There was a lot of variety in the bowl as well, and everything tasted amazing. The staff was also incredibly nice and friendly, and our waiter even gave us a tasting of the beer they offer. The beer was actually SO good and I'm not usually a beer drinker, it's very light and you don't feel very heavy when you drink it. I thoroughly enjoyed dining here and can't wait to go back!

Amazing food all the way. The staff was extremely friendly and had the time to explain the whole menu and how to eat the dish. The restaurant manager Jay was also very helpful to make sure we were treated with the best care possible. I've been to many sushi restaurants in the Bay, but the Roll offers a different type and approach to the food. I highly recommend even food for delivery or take out because how they have the food wrapped is very efficient and pleasant to eat!
