I'm suprised this restaurant isn't more busy. Service was good and fast. I just wish that the chef would talk to us about the fish and stuff and make it a more intimate experience. Our server explained to us what everything was but it wasn't the same as my expectation when i go to omakase places. But overall, pretty good from service, wait time and all.Food was great. We did the smaller omakase menu with the premium add on and that was a good amount of food for us. The quality of the food was excellent. Great drink selection too. I got the nigori flight and it was a fun experience. Very generous drink portion.Highly recommend. We would definitely be back.

3.8/5 stars. Came here on a Thursday night around 6:30PM and it was practically empty! No wait times at all. There was ample seating. Ambiance was okay. A little grime-y, though, for a supposedly nicer omakase spot. There were a lot of flies (fruit flies) flying around us and the food so that definitely contributed to the lackluster ambiance for me. Service was great! Everyone was super friendly and really made it a point to explain the food we were served. Now the food! Short summary: I'd recommend ordering a la carte and not their advertised omakase sets. Long summary: We ordered the Shio omakase set for $95 per person. For the price, we were SO FULL. It came with 18 items (including each nigiri)! So much food for such a good price. BUT.....first half of the items served was lackluster and didn't feel like they conceptually thought through the course (like the nori chip was, first of all stale, and second of all basically eating a mouthful of bonito flakes which threw me off). Several items were also overly sweet or overly salty or overly tomato-y or overly cucumber-y. Also, I noticed that the tobiko dish had a lot of fish skin still intact which was bothersome to me for an omakase place (see picture). BUT THEN. The second half was really awesome. Basically after the apricot sorbet break (which btw was also super random that they suddenly serve dessert in the middle of the course and especially after eating hot steamed egg...it felt weirdly placed), all the items that came after were GREAT! I loved the tataki, the yaki, and the nigiri. They were on point. So TLDR; the nigiri and specialty fish dishes were awesome! The other stuff, it is fine but not really superb for an omakase spot.I noticed TONS of people ordering pick up or delivery and I'm suspecting they ordered just the nigiri or sashimi sets based on the packaging, which validates my thought on how their sushi is superior to their other items.Anyway, I'd consider coming back again (or even ordering takeout) for a la carte.

We ordered the $95 "shio" tasting and a sake tastingWe really enjoyed the experience and food here! We were all surprised the restaurant wasn't more packed - on a Saturday night there were only two other parties dining in. But as we were eating, every minute or two, there would be a receipt printing for takeout orders, so they were still very busy. Busy it's good for sushi restaurants which means the fish is fresh! The waitresses were so nice and the fish was indeed very fresh. My favorite parts of the menu were the Japanese egg custard (chawanmushi) and the chef's selected nigiri, which came out in two separate courses, each with four pieces of fish. The sake tasting was a generous pour, and the four of us shared two tastings.Would definitely come back!

My friend and I got the $95 omakase set, we were excited to see an affordable omakase option open up in the city but this did not hit the spot at all...None of the sushi were particular standouts to me. The appetizers were not that great. In particular I remember the nori chip was extremely stale and was giving cardboard. The steamed egg, nori with mixed fish, and miso cod was good. But I don't know if I'd come back for just that. Perhaps their regular food menu items are better? I understand that it's on the cheaper end for omakase, but I don't think that should correlate to bad tasting food...We also waited a total of 3 hours for this entire meal. It was like unnecessary waits in between that we just got so tired lol, I did not expect to dine for that long.

Visiting friends on Valencia so decided to check this place out since it was in the same building.Cool interior design and busy as expected for a Friday night so reses are recommended but lucky for us we were seated before our scheduled time.Nigiri Sampler- very well presented and the fish to rice ratio was perfect and with 8 types of fish it was a good variety. The waiter identified each piece but would have liked if wasabi (which was not served) and soy was required based on the way each fish was described.Seared Scallop hand roll - Unique presentation of chopped seared pieces of scallop and flavors were ok.Good service and all the dishes were well presented but +$50 for Beef Donburi is a little over the top given the amount of wagyu provided.Overall, if you are in the area you could give it a try but would not make a special trip into SF for this experience.

Service: My husband and I finally visited Sushi Shio earlier this year, after wanting to visit for a while. I made a reservation online for 2 people for the same night. Upon arriving, there was some confusion with the staff and I'm not sure if there were some crossed signals with multiple booking sites or if it was due to the last minute-ness of the rez, but it was unclear if they would accept it (even though it was confirmed online). I'm happy to report that they were able to honour the rez (which was a relief since we were seated near the door and overheard some walk-in customers being turned away). And throughout the meal, the staff continued to be attentive and hospitable and were able to given recs when asked.Food: The tasting menu overall was excellent and it's clear that each dish and item was well-planned and prepared with care. It's hard to choose just one favourite, though the sushi and tartlette would definitely be up there for me.Price: The Restaurant Week deal wasn't too big of a price difference compared to their regular menu, so coming here for dinner on a typical night would be a similar experience I think. Yelp has it listed at $$$$ which I actually think is inaccurate since it seems more affordable than that.Location: Easy to get to by public transit - walking distance from Market St and several MUNI stops.

We dined at Sushi Shio for SFRW back in November 2024. They offered a $90 tasting menu, which is affordable (relatively speaking) for SF standards. Overall there was a good variety of hot and cold items. My personal favorite was the miso cod with kabocha purée. The cod was buttery and moist, and the purée was sweet and creamy. We added the o-toro, uni, and A5 wagyu supplement for +$35 extra, which were all very tasty as well.I thought the chawanmushi presentation was very disappointing. The egg custard itself was good, but presentation was awful; the bowl was maybe one-third full and it only had egg custard, ikura, and furikake. It could've used other ingredients like shrimp, crab, or even mushrooms to give the dish more volume. I wasn't a fan of the abalone with nigori jelly dish either. I didn't like the nigori jelly flavor, and my dislike of abalone is just a personal preference. Their miso soup was too salty, and the mackerel nigiri wasn't good. It wasn't bad or old, but rather just didn't taste good. Unfortunately, Sushi Shio didn't hit the mark for us for the higher-end Japanese restaurants in SF. Service was very nice, friendly, and accommodating, and ambiance was decent. However, we won't be returning.

3.5/5 My friend and I came here for our birthdays with a reservation on a Friday night. We were basically the only ones in the restaurant which was surprising. We split the 18 piece sashimi tasting and each got the 8 piece sushi tasting. The nigiri pieces surprisingly had pepper in the rice? The sashimi was ok. We told them it was our birthday and they surprised us with two desserts, cake and a yuzu yogurt. This was so sweet of them! Service was good and nice!

When walking in, I can't help but feel distracted by the random pictures hung up on the wall. Everything from the decor to the upkeep to the service seems to say that this is just your average Japanese takeout shop. However the food (and the prices) tell a vastly different tale.I had the Chirashi Bowl and was blown away. Such an excellent variety of fresh fish and flavors. The house salad and miso soup they served was also some of the best I've ever had. However, the prices are still a bit too high imo.

This place has been on my bucket list for a while so I thought today's a good day to cross it off so here I am.I ordered the "Haku" tasting $59 and I added the premium B $37 and C $28 supplements along with it. Everything tasted amazing! The highlights for me would be the premium supplements which I highly recommend adding on to your tasting menu. The service here was pretty good as well. My server Josh was very kind, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable on their menu. The restaurant is well decorated on the inside giving off a modern vibe to it. The parking in this area can be a little rough, I recommend taking an uber or finding a nearby parking garage as the street parking can be scarce. Try it out if you like. :)
