You've got to try one of the coolest French restaurants in San Francisco!Tucked away in the Cornell Hotel de France in downtown San Francisco is Jeanne d'Arc, a quintessential French restaurant that makes you feel like you've traveled back in time as you dine in the baroque-inspired decor. Since 1966, Jeanne d'Arc has been the epitome of French gastronomy in San Francisco. From the outside of the hotel, you would never know the restaurant is there, but you're greeted by the concierge who leads you to the elevator, taking you to the restaurant. You walk in and immediately see stained glass windows, tapestries, and a statue in honor of the famed French heroine, Joan of Arc. The vibes are great, and the hospitality is amazing, but what really stands out is their menu. Here's what we ordered:- Jeanne d'Arc Salad- Soup Du Jour- Filet Mignon Sauce Forestière- Magret de Canard Au Poivre (Duck Breast)- Soufflé with Grand Marnier Sauce- Crème Brûlée- ChardonnayEvery single dish was incredible! The soup of the day, which was a bacon potato soup, was sooooo good! I loved the duck breast with the peppercorn sauce, and the filet mignon was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The soufflé was so delicious, and I couldn't pass up a delectable crème brûlée.It's definitely worth checking out, and with Bastille Day coming up in a couple of weeks, now might be the perfect time to try somewhere new!

"You don't have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces--just good food from fresh ingredients." -- Julia Child Nothing fancy here at Jeanne D'Arc, just really good food in a charming and quaint SF hotel. This was the final food stop on our anniversary weekend and it was a solid if ultimately disappointing outing. First, the food was really good. We enjoyed the appetizers of soup (potato and leeks) and escargot. Entrees were also fabulous (filet and lamb) while the soufflé dessert was a nice rendition more eggy in its taste finish. We actually had a far superior version in San Antonio. The disappointing aspects were that the server was super rushed to get our order and every wine we tried to order they were sold out: the Daou half bottle and the best three French wines that they had on the list. I usually BYOB but because we were walking around the city I didn't this time, my mistake. We wanted a French wine to go with our meal, I had to settle for a generic Napa cab. So cutesy space, the service improved over the meal, the food was excellent but they need better inventory control on the wine. Recommended but not quite a four star restaurant

Went for DinnerFood - 5/5. Rack of lamb had a great thickness cooked to a perfect medium rare. It was trimmed skillfully with the excess fat being removed and a clean bone. Lamb itself was tender, with the gamey aroma being softened by the herbs and sauce. Sauce had the richness of a good demi-glace, with the hints of sourness from red wine. It paired beautifully with the lamb and the sides as well. Tomato had a fun texture balance from the breadcrumbs, haricots verts had a nice snap with butter, and the potatoes had a well balanced flavor of cream and cheese. Duck breast was tender with a meaty bite. The strong peppercorn sauce paired well with the duck, reducing the irony flavor of duck breast. Sadly the duck breast lacked any layer of fat, as that would have added an extra richness. Due to this, the peppercorn sauce eventually became overpowering for the lean duck breast. Bread had a great chew, being excellent for soaking up the leftover sauce. Grand marnier souffle showcased again their skill in French cuisine. The souffle itself had a delicate texture that provided a slight crisp to your bite, while being melt-in-your-mouth smooth. The grand marnier sauce successfully cooked out the alcohol, creating a delicious cream sauce that starts with a bit of astringent bitterness, but finishes with the citrus notes of grand marnier. It made for a great balancing flavor to the sweetness of the sauce, adding tremendously to the souffle.Service - 5/5. Professional and courteous service that you'd expect from a fine dining establishment. Service was always available and prompt. We were celebrating our anniversary, and they graciously provided us some complimentary sparkling wine. They were professional in their timing, picking the moment the food arrived to our table to take our pictures for us. Their service really added to make the celebration a wonderful experience.Value - 4/5. The price range is on the higher side, even for a classic fine dining establishment. The lamb was priced at $59 and the duck at $50, which can't be labeled as anything under 'expensive'. The souffle was a surprisingly reasonable $17. The dishes are classically French and really capture the French flavor profile, even down to the portion size, which is actually quite rare in my experience. Excellent spot for a special occasion to experience their culinary finesse in authentic French cuisine.Parking - Street (Metered)

I'm hoping everything is as top drawer when it reopens, because I have good memories of dining there several times in the past. Outstanding food, good wine recommendations, friendly servers and a chance the French owner will stop by your table to chat.

Exquisite! A fun, over the top atmosphere with over the top medieval French decor. Shut down during pandemic, then reopened with new owners who brought back the French chef and staff. We started with the tender escargot and house salad, which paired well together. For the mains, we had the duck breast and lamb -- both were flavorful and perfectly cooked and even the sides were great (not an afterthought) -- potatoes and green beans. For dessert, you HAVE to get the Grand Marnier souffle (allow for 20 minutes) and the creme brulee. We found street parking after circling once, on a Tuesday night. Get yoursel there for a date night!

My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for many years (at least 20 or more years) until Covid shut it down. The menu and décor have not changed much. The food is still excellent and the service is still immaculate. Platting They still serve their "must have" soufflé - it is one of the best AND it's not on the menu. It comes piping hot and when you put on the cream, it melts down. Since this is made on the spot, you need to order the soufflé when your order is placed. The chef is still the same as before and it was nice to catch up with him. This restaurant is in a basement of a hotel that is located between Powell and Mason Streets (half a block from the cable car lines and within 3 blocks from Union Square).

I had come across Jeanne D'Arc in numerous sf foodie articles and was looking forward to trying it out; disappointedly our experience was a massive let down.We came for dinner mid-week, making reservations was easy and was ultimately unnecessary as the restaurant was mostly empty when we arrived.Despite being located in an undesirable decaying sf neighborhood (i.e. tenderloin) in the basement of a small hotel, the ambiance of the restaurant was rather nice and the wait service was pretty good.Where this place fails miserably is on the food; nothing served was spectacular and it's a stretch to call some of the dishes "good."My partner ordered the prix fixe, while I choose items from the standard dinner menu. Probably the best thing served was the complimentary bread, which went well with the escargots I ordered. The escargots were tasty but nothing spectacular -- fairly standard and average compared to other escargots I've had at places that served them. The appetizer that came with my partners dish was very strange; tiny cooked sautéed shrimp served on half a raw avocado -- while it may have looked interesting, the dish simply didn't work. The biggest disappointments were the main courses; my partner had the salmon (which was the same as the catch of the day) and I had the rack of lamb. The first thing we noticed was that the sides on both dishes were identical -- it reminded me of the meals you get on airplanes where they just replace the protein -- makes me wonder if the chef and kitchen staff are just "phoning it in." While the salmon was a nice cut, it was undercooked and my lamb was tasty but rather small and skimpy. Lastly for desert we shared a créme brule; the top layer didn't crack and the texture was more like a thin piece of stretch wrap, but the custard was decent enough.Overall, this place fails in terms of value for money -- definitely not worth it.

Absolutely loved the vibe and decor. The medieval paintings were fun. There is French standards like escargot and Lapin. Large Wine list. Wait staff seemed disinterested, but that kind of fit into what you think of at a French resteraunt.

It's still here, in the charming Cornell Hotel de France.. Stairs or antique elevator brings you to a medieval setting. Wooden beams, stone walls, stained glass and lots of stuff, quite the setting. The food has returned to classic French cuisine, and our 4 top table had 4 excellent meals, smiles all around. Excellent rabbit, delicious duck, tender beef and wonderful fish. Each dish beautifully plated, with vegetables on the side. Escargot are fantastic. And the soufflé! Comment si bonne! Absolutely wonderful.Excellent wines, very attentive and helpful service, and a gracious staff. And a brilliant chef!Enjoy!

What a beautiful tragedy this place is. A manager lording over guests like a tyrant reminding guests they need there table back soon numerous times. He was so focused on turning tables on the night I was proposing to my future husband, that in the middle of my speech with a ring in my hand , he rudely told us he needed the table loudly.I he's gay men getting engagement is how Manny treats people.Manny should not be allowed to run a restaurant, hotel, or even wash dishes.Other guests were nit as rushed, we spent 600 dollars there to be told to hurry up, as we had just purchased another bottle of wine, ordered a third entree, and some other bites.I have been eating here for decades. Own a place in the Loire Valley. Make fromage, wine, goats, cattle, lambs.I would rather give their chef a job in Angôulemé, than let his vision rot with the horrible management company snatching up boutique hotels just doors away from this beautiful.Come home Bernard, forget this homophonic, horrible company.Life us better in France
