We gratefully flopped down in two comfy seats at the Pied Piper Bar in the Palace Hotel in San Francisco on a cool and foggy Saturday night. Somehow we had managed to arrive a day early for our hotel reservation across the street at The Ritz, and our gracious concierge there had helped us book into the Palace for the night! We had eaten at the Pied Piper before, so it was a good choice after a long day driving. The greeting and service were spectacular. The busy, professional server brought menus and and immediately took our beverage orders. I got my classic Sauvignon Blanc, and my husband opted for Feverfew ginger ale, a favorite of his that we discovered here. The beverages came quickly, along with some classic bar snacks, olives and potato chipsWe perused the menu, which is very abbreviated, even for a bar menu. There were meaty selections for my husband, but the only chicken entree was spicy, so I improvised with a Caesar salad with added shrimp. I really enjoyed the retro ambience of the bar, with the Maxfield Parrish mural as a stunning centerpiece. I like a room with a view, and art is a fine view, indeed! There was also a TV for sports fans! The room filled up quickly as we enjoyed our beverages. We did note that the adjacent lounge, where we had eaten last time was not set up for service, but noted that the hotel had just ended a long strike. Our food came out quickly, my husbands Braised Beef Short Ribs were meaty, hearty and tender. My salad had that real Caesar flavor, which also enlivened the shrimp. We sampled the dishes immediately. The quiet ambience of the room just added to the soothing quality of the food, and set us up for a future visit!

3.5 for an above average hotel restaurant-bar. And when I think hotel restaurants, I think upscale American fare (so-so), standard cocktails (above average), and fine wine (skip!!), so my review will be based on that.* Tomales Bay Oysters (3.5 stars) - Too fishy* Green Goddess Salad (3.5 stars) - Was shocked to find this was more of a wedge, served with iceberg? Dressing was alright, would not order again but was a nice contrast to the other dishes we ordered.* Garlic Truffle Fries (4.5 stars) - Yum* Ribeye (4 stars): Solid ribeye, wish the cut was thicker though.* Wines were very expensive and tasted like they had gone bad. Stick with the cocktails.Seems like a great spot for a burger and fries, otherwise pretty overpriced and probably caters to the guests here on business.

I love a good ribeye and Pied Piper got it right both visits. I was lucky enough to be staying in the hotel, so I was able to visit whenever I fancied a steak and good drink before turning in for the night. There was never a hostess at the entrance, but I just walked in past the bar area to the back and grabbed a seat. I was offered water, fresh chips, bread and butter. My order was taken quickly since I knew what I wanted, my waiters checked in periodically, but never rushed me. I do appreciate the waiter on the first night advising me to try the ribeye vs the short rib I believe it was. Excellent choice! This hotel and restaurant are historic and a must visit! Once I passed the bar, which was lively, and entered into the other dining area, it was so quiet and peaceful. Just what I needed after a day of exploring. This is on my top list of places to eat and stay when in SF.

Stayed at the Plaza hotel for Fleet Week weekend and had some drinks and a snack here. Food, drinks and service was MID. If we didn't have a $100 room credit we wouldn't come here. Prices are high for the mid quality you get. Just the drinks and one snack went over $100. Needless to say we will not be back.

Tonight I dined with 2 other guests in the Pied Piper Restaurant. Th Palace is usually beautifully decorated during the Christmas season. (note: the carriage room was closed off for a private party). It was just okay this year. The restaurant was a big disappointment due to the quality of food for the price, the limited menu, the lack of the 'signature' cocktails as advertised, and the staff operation. I live in SF and completely understand it is an expensive city, but there are many comparably priced restaurants that have more expansive, unique, and quality selections. It was not a good spend of my money and a disappointment for all.We had: a martini, aperol spritz, lemon drop (signature?), 2 pasta pomadoros, and a wagyu burger. With tax and tip= $200. This local will not be back.

One of the few places to have a late meal in downtown San Francisco. A brief yet good variety of dinner options as well as good drink selections. Old world ambience and vibe. I had mussels n rye manhattan. Rye was refreshing and mussels flavorful.

We went to the restaurant, but they said they can not do take out. So we had to order via room service (which comes with fees of course) and a huge waste of time.Food- the green goddess salad was great. But everything else as mediocre.Price- pricey but that is expected given it is in a hotel. Ambience- cute, I would have liked to eat there but it was too crowded and we were trying to avoid large crowds due to rise in Covid again. Staff- waiters were not very polite but the host was more professional. I would order the green goddess salad again, but only if they did take away. And if I was staying in the hotel and didn't have other food options.

Much of the food is celiac friendly, but our waiter wasn't aware of this. The manager got involved and all became clear. He also promised that he would work on labeling gluten-free items when the menu is reprinted.I ordered the wagyu beef burger without a bun. Our waiter told us that the cheddar cheese and French fries were not GF so he had the cheese left off and subbed a salad. As you can see by one of the photos, the inside of the burger was barely warm, which was concerning -- but my waiter told me that was how it was supposed to be cooked. Talking with the manager after dinner, I learned that there was a dedicated fryer for french fries and they were gluten-free. He also told me that when the burger arrived without cheese, I should have asked the waiter to bring it to me. As for the undercooked burger, the manager looked at what I left on my plate and told me that they use a thermometer to check the internal temperature before sending anything to a table, but I should have sent it back if it was not to my liking. My wife had the mussels which were plentiful and tasty. All in all - good atmosphere, decently priced food without surcharges, but a major lack of training in food allergies. Ask for the manager if you feel you are not getting good answers from the wait staff.

We checked in late at the hotel and luckily Pied Piper was open. When you first enter there is a bar and as you go further in there is a large beautiful piano and tables all around. We were lucky enough to be at the restaurant with live music. We had the salad, salmon, pasta and chocolate cake for dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious and the quality of the ingredients were great. The service was on point and everyone was so nice. Will I come here again? Definitely. I heard the burger is scrumptious.

The problem is the service. the Pied Piper was nearly empty, but the wait staff hovered near our table throughout the meal, trying to rush us. we ignored the staff and they tried to remove our plates multiple times before we were finished. they gave us the bill while we were still eating. we had to tell them to stop bothering us and that we would let them know when we were done. The waiter attempted to put his hand on my shoulder. they ran a duplicate charge on my credit card. . The bar itself is beautiful, but the service is designed to benefit the wait staff and not the customer. i'd recommend having a drink here to see the space but eating somewhere else.
