Visited Moya for the first time on Friday December 27th.I went with my husband and a friend of ours. We showed up a few minutes after they had opened. It's a very bare bones restaurant, and you order/pay at the counter. The woman working was very nice. We ordered:- gursha injera rolls- ayb homemade cheese- vegan sampler- shuro- mushroom tibsOur order came with a giant basket of injera for enjoying everything. The standouts for us were the gursha, shuro, and mushroom tibs. Everything was great, I can't wait to go back.

We came here before then open. They let us in a few mins before the time they normally open the door. The veggie sampler, paired with that tangy sour bread, took my taste buds on a joyous adventure. Each bite was a medley of rich, aromatic flavors that left me thoroughly impressed. Now, let's talk about the price - it's surprisingly budget-friendly. This place may not boast a fancy ambiance, but there's a genuine warmth that comes from being embraced by the community. It's more than just a restaurant; it's a gathering place where the love for good food and camaraderie meld into an unforgettable experience.

Walking in was incredible, smelled so good inside! The food was delicious and healthy. So glad I get to stop in for lunch from now on when I'm working at the office.

I'm stoked to have another Ethiopian option with tasty gluten-free injera! So far I've only tried a few vegan plates -- the sampler and mushroom tibsi, the former of which was good and the latter phenomenal! (My partner and I both love us some mushrooms!) We also had a (generously portioned) side of Ajibo. Best of all, the folks here are super friendly.

I don't have a lot of Ethiopian food in SF but this was very tasty, well spiced food.We tried the vegan sampler & siga tibs, which was a great way to try a little bit of everything. Vegan sampler comes with braised cabbage, red & yellow lentils, and collard greens; siga tibs is beef. The beef and red lentils were my favorite, both really well seasoned and flavorful. The injera texture is a sponge-y sour dough and I really liked the texture, especially combined with all of the other foods. Being a sour dough base, the injera does have a sour flavor that was a bit overpowering to me in some bites but with the right amount of lentils/meat was well-balanced. I really enjoyed the style of eating as everything is shared and you can create your own bites and flavor combos. Great vegetarian options and would recommend for anyone looking interested in good Ethiopian food.

Location: The restaurant is located on a busy street with limited street parking in front of the restaurant. There is an amazing metered parking spot right in front of the restaurant BUT there is a sign that you can't park there Mon- Friday before 7PM. More street parking is around the corner, but we drove around a bit until we found a free spot. There are multiple homeless encampments in the area, so the restaurant is kept locked during business hours and an employee will open the door when they see you. Food: Taste was amazing. We ordered the veggie platter which came out in a big bowl on top of injera. For the main dish we ordered beef, which was placed in the middle of the bowl and my only qualm was that this portion was extremely tiny. The beef and veggie platter was about the same price, $17-$18 each, but the portion of beef looked similar to the portion of one item from the veggie platter. Ambiance: The restaurant is very neat--almost corporate looking. The seating area is small with only 5 tables as pictured. You order at the counter and seat yourself. The place is very casual and there is even a self self water station.

Continuing to revisit this little gem. Enjoyed the Injera with the Vegan sampler and Kitfo - Ethiopian beef tartare. Great as always, friendly service (family owned) worth the destination just two blocks off market Perfect if you're seeing a show at the Orpheum or Warfield.

Moya is located in SoMa, San Francisco. The restaurant serves Ethiopian food to locals and the neighboring community. It opened its doors in 2009. The owner is Fana Alemayehu, who comes from the northern region of Tigray. This small, family-run Ethiopian restaurant has been around before and after the hardship from the pandemic of 2020, but their cuisines are here to stay. The layout of the restaurant is simple and tidy enough. It is not noticeably perfect in particular. There are enough seats inside to accommodate the ebb and flow of the place. Service was nothing short of great when I came. It is conveniently nearby Market St. and is a short walk from a BART station.I came here during lunch because it was near where I work. I also was recovering from wisdom teeth surgery and so I knew that Ethiopian food can be soft enough for me to eat. I like that the veggie/vegan sampler plate comes as a large portion. The flavors are bold and it is hard to say what was my favorite part. I recommend coming here for lunch, or even dinner, if you are craving Ethiopian cuisine.

Pretty good non-pretentious gem on 9th. Injera was excellent, also veg. combo and spicy mushroom/tofu tibs! Shiro was was tasty but maybe too smooth and rich for my preference, but idk what true Ethiopian style would be. Takeout servings were good, we got several meals out of it. But very nice to have reasonable, tasty Ethiopian available in SOMA!
