Came here for the first time with a friend who's a regular!I got the kakiage udon, which comes with vegetables and shrimp tempura! I really enjoyed it- the soup was delicious and flavorful. It was not too salty! I also liked that the tempura was fried perfectly, and I'll definitely be back to try more dishes! A 10/10 meal for sure :)The seating is a bit on the smaller side, but there is still a nice ambiance! Be sure to get there early because there are lines starting between 6-7pm! The service was also good and quite fast as well! You go up and order your food at the counter, then find a table to sit at and wait for the food to be brought out :)

Katsuo + Kombu is hands down one of the best places for fresh, handmade udon! I ordered the Niki beef udon with extra noodles (only $3--such a great deal) and added some tempura ebi on the side. The udon noodles were chewy and perfectly textured, soaking up the rich and flavorful broth. The Niki beef was tender and well-seasoned, complementing the broth beautifully. Burdock root soaked up the broth quite wonderfully as well. Everything was fresh, and I could see the chef making the udon to order, which was impressive and added to the experience.I arrived during the lunch rush, and the place was absolutely packed. If you're coming for lunch, I highly recommend arriving before 1:30 PM--they stop taking orders if they reach capacity before their 2 PM closing time. Seating is communal when packed, so expect to sit with other patrons, which actually makes the experience more lively and enjoyable. The staff were incredibly friendly, fast, and efficient, making sure orders came out smoothly despite the rush. The interior is clean and well-maintained, with a cozy and simple decor. The warm wooden accents and thoughtful design make the space inviting, and I really appreciated the jazzy background music, which created a relaxed yet upbeat atmosphere.Parking is street parking, so be prepared to hunt for a spot, especially during peak hours. But trust me, it's worth it! Katsuo + Kombu delivers on both quality and atmosphere, making it a must-visit for udon lovers. I'll definitely be back for another bowl soon and hopefully they don't sell out of their curry udon when I come visit!

Loved the service and the variety of their menu items.Foodwise I think the hot soup broth can be a little saltier. They did a great job with tempura items. The dipping sauce for tempura was flavored with ginger and tasted good. Udon texture was still chewy, cooked just right. The space was relatively small but line moved pretty quickly.I would be happy to have this spot in my neighborhood.

Got here a little before 7pm on a Wednesday night and the place was almost full but since there was no line, I decided to see if they had any new items to check out. Since it's been an unusually warm day some cold noodles sounded good and they happened to have a cold tsukemen so I thought I'd check it out. It was nice and tasty with the sesame dipping sauce which also had some red chili oil for spice. There was some nice vegetables and chicken and soft cooked tempura egg to go with the noodles. I probably should have just mixed up the sauce and poured it over everything since dipping was a little difficult with the size of the bowl. It was nice and refreshing as well as filling. It almost reminded of a hiyashi chuuka or cold Chinese noodles which is available in the summers in Japan.

Many people say this is the best udon in San Francisco, so I had to try it for myself. Katsuo + Kombu in NoPa does Fukuoka-style udon -- thin, chewy noodles in an umami-packed dashi broth. I got the Niku Beef Udon with wagyu beef and crispy burdock root, and the Kakiage Udon topped with crunchy veggie and shrimp tempura. Both were unreal, but the real star? That broth. It's rich but still light, packed with flavor, and honestly just straight up comfort in a bowl. If you haven't been here yet you need to add this spot to the top of your list. Get there early to avoid a wait!

I was excited to try Katsuo + Kombu with some friends after work. Great for casual dining or takeout since it's counter-service and has very few tables. Since we dined in on a weekday around 8pm, there was no wait! Katsuo + Kombu specializes in fresh/handmade udon noodles. Lots of broth choices, but I went with the Sesame Miso Pork. Firstly, the udon noodles were DELICIOUS!!! Personally, I've never been crazy about Udon, but maybe that's because I never had Katsuo + Kombu. The broth was rich and comforting after a long day at work. I finished every last drop! I could have used a little more spice, but was able to add some chili flakes. Friendly & quick service! Would definitely recommend checking this restaurant out, I know I'll be coming back.

I came here with a friend for dinner the other night and I think I have found my new favorite udon place in the city. Despite it being a cold rainy day, I ordered the Mentai Yamakake, which comes with grated Japanese mountain yam, spicy cod roe, shiso, and Nori seaweed. The broth was flavorful and the noodles had a perfect texture. (Disclaimer: I would make sure you know what this is before ordering it; the mountain yam has a slimy texture). I came here on Saturday night at 5 pm, and we got seated very quickly; by the time we finished our meal, the line was quite a bit longer so I recommend coming early if possible. The service was fast and friendly and the interior was simple and clean. Will definitely be back!

It's my go to udon place in the city! Although there's usually a short wait, there's fast service one you're in and it's decently priced. Seating for small- med parties. Wouldn't recommend for 6+ unless you want to split tables. Noodles are soft, light and fresh. The variety is great and loved that they switched out for some new dishes recently! Our go tos are the spicy tan tan, the niku, the pork miso. We had the mentai roe one and that was ok, wouldn't get again. We also normally get the karaage or veggie tempura. We'll be back! Seriously we come here every 2 weeks!

Great vibes, great food. Glad to have finally made it here after hearing so many great things. Was a short wait for a table of two (less than 10 minutes) and the orders came quickly. Saw the crabonara udon and the learned that yesterday (when we visited) was the first shipment of the season for the Hokkaido snow crab, which was incredible sweet. The Dungeness crab mixed into the pasta was plentiful and the Italian fusion was spot on. Exceptional.
