You simply cannot beat the value at Kabuto. The price top quality ratio is insane as the fish is so fresh, beautifully/thoughtfully presented. It's definitely an authentic experience through and through. It's a small mom and pop shop, so best to make reservations! They are so sweet and kind here.

Celebrated Valentine's Day dinner at Kabuto and was pretty impressed with the omakase experience! It's a small, no frills space serving up an inventive menu of a la carte signature sushi and omakase options. The omakase was $140 a person, which was more than I expected since I had heard it was an affordable $99 a person, but it might have been inflated for Valentine's day? We enjoyed our dinner with a bottle of junmai daiginjo sake, which was crisp and clean with nice floral notes. It was 18 courses, with our favorite bites being the wagyu dumpling, baby maine lobster nigiri, and the toro truffle caviar nigiri. I liked that each piece of nigiri had its own unique pairing and topping, it felt well thought out and intentional. Out of the 8 pieces of their chef selection nigiri, none of them stood out too much besides the fatty tuna. I will definitely try more of their signature sushi offerings, like the hamachi pear and scallop apple I've seen in so many other reviews the next time I come here. If the omakase was $99 I would get it again, but I think the first couple courses and the nigiri were nothing spectacular at $140 a person. My only other complaint is the seating at the bar was a little cramped, my boyfriend said the servers kept leaning into him when delivering and clearing plates and my chair was constantly getting bumped. Saw lots of regulars in here, so I know this is a solid spot with loyal customers. I'll definitely be back to try the a la carte options!

I've had the pleasure of dining at Kabuto twice, both times in a group of four, and it has quickly become one of my favorite spots. The restaurant came highly recommended by many locals, and it more than lived up to its reputation. From the moment you step inside, the cozy and intimate atmosphere pulls you in, which is perfect for a relaxed yet elevated dining experience. We made our way down the sushi menu, eager to try everything, and also ordered some specials from the wall. Every dish was fresh and beautifully prepared, but the akamutsu was the standout for me. I'm still dreaming about the 1849 oyster dish, which was simply unforgettable. The service at Kabuto is impeccable. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and always ready with great recommendations. The pacing of the dishes was spot-on, allowing us to enjoy each one at the perfect time. And let's talk about the sushi chef! The main chef was not only incredibly skilled but also kind and welcoming, giving off the vibes of the legendary sushi masters of Japan. His passion for his craft was evident in every bite.Kabuto also boasts a fantastic alcohol list. I made sure my food was accompanied with plenty of warm sake and large bottles of Asahi, which paired perfectly with my meal. For anyone seeking an exceptional sushi experience in a cozy, intimate setting, Kabuto is a must-visit. I'm already counting down the days until my next meal here!

Kabuto, located on Geary Street in the Richmond district, is a knockout when it comes to sushi. It's like stepping into a ring of culinary greatness, with traditional Japanese décor and a vibe that's both laid-back and electrifying. The staff? They're champions too, super friendly and always ready to guide you through the menu or recommend the perfect sake to go with your meal.Sure, the competition might be fierce on Geary Street, but Kabuto stands tall as a true champ. Went here for a casual dinner after Valentine's Day. We did not opt for their Valentine's Day omakase menu, but ordered a la carte items instead. We personally felt like that was more worth it. Fish tasted super fresh. Service was impeccable. They were so friendly.Bar seating was a bit cramped, but we did it for the view of the sushi making. They gave us an item on the house that was super delicious, which was a bonus!

Was taken here for my birthday and sat at the bar. It was such an amazing experience. We didn't have the omakase set, but we got a dragon roll and a couple nigiri. The dragon roll was very fresh and tasty the unagi was so good! The nigiri was amazing. We ordered a seasonal special- cherry blossom trout or sakura masu- and it was so delicious, very delicate in flavor and super fresh. All the fish was so tasty and fresh and they had a lot of unique combinations for their nigiri that I haven't seen at other restaurants before. I really enjoyed the food. The service was incredible and took the dinner to the next level. The wait staff was very quick and efficient and the owner was super friendly. Seeing him make sushi and talking to him made dining at Kabuto feel like an incredible experience. We can't wait to come back!

3.5 stars. We came for dinner to celebrate a birthday. On rainy weekday, it wasn't crowded. A regular who moved to the East Bay made a return to dine at the sushi bar, recognized by the sushi chef. I ordered the $99 omakase which was really nice with many pieces and different items to try. If I were to return, I would order again even though I was quite full. After a while, the nigiri pieces, beautifully presented, tasted about the same. My fav was the wagyu beef dumpling. It was the most flavorful in the omakase set. The seaweed dish was very good too. There's daily specials posted on the chalk board. Hubby tried the teriyaki chicken and didn't like it. Rice and miso soup are extra charge with the dish. Our friends thought the Nabeyaki udon was too sweet. BFF liked her sea bass entree but the potato croquettes were too mushy. We shared the grilled eggplant with miso and thought that was good. My clam miso arrived at the end of the omakase set. I didn't care much for it compared to regular miso. It didn't have enough Unami. BFF raved about the chawanmushi stating to was cooked perfectly. For dessert, the set came with a delicious poached pear. We also ordered tempura green tea ice cream but the batter was disappointing. The matcha creme Brulee was good, but very small. BFF got a strawberry mochi which is the kind you can buy at the supermarket. The Bananas foster was delicious. Service was very quick. As soon as your dishes were finished, they cleared the tables. I did have a hard time understanding some of the explanations given when each dish arrived to the table.

Kabuto is an excellent restaurant. The sushi and sashimi are very fresh and delicious and the service is first rate. In fact Kabuto is my favorite Japanese restaurant in San Francisco. It is small so it's a good idea to make reservations. One thing I love about it is that there is no blaring TV or music. Highly recommended.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in SF, and we have been going here regularly for decades. It is super low key but the service is attentive, and most of all, the quality of the raw fish is top notch. They have a very creative menu. Our family orders ceviche, hot apple, hamachi jalapeno, and their gyoza. The miso soup is great too. Do yourself and visit this underappreciated gem!
