I have been wanting noodles for awhile, so I stopped by Jikasei Mensho to get some ramen. I hadn't been here in a long time so I was surprised to see abura soba on the menu. It's a soupless ramen, which was perfect for me. I do like their broths, but I'm not really a soup person. Though, I did order a side of chicken broth because it's been cold here in the city lately. They no longer have those sheets of paper to customize your order. There's one kiosk to place your order and pay through Square. Unfortunately, there's no other place to look at the menu other than the kiosk, but they don't have an extensive menu anyway. The abura soba was delicious! It is very rich with pork fat and sesame oil. It has a lot of umami flavor. The chili vinegar you get on the side adds a low heat and acidity that's needed to cut the fat. Though, I could've used more acidity. The noodles chewy and had a good bite. It's topped with seaweed, chashu pork, green onions, bamboo shoots, and one fish cake. And it's a big portion! I saved half for dinner and added an egg, adding to its richness. I should've tried it with mirin since I needed more acidity, but perhaps a rice wine vinegar would've been better (which I don't have in my kitchen). As for the chicken broth, it was very comforting with loads of green onions. I'm not big on green onions, but they added a lot of flavor to the broth instead of salt. The Market is struggling a bit, a shell of its former glory days. Because there aren't as many dining options as before, there's plenty of seating. It's kinda dark, though it was cloudy today but I don't think that area gets a lot of natural light due to the height of the buildings. Plus, the music was too loud (or maybe I'm just getting old). Jikasei Mensho has its own music, or at least it sounded like it but The Market's speakers overpowered it. I think calmer, ambient music would've matched the vibe, but they can't help that they're located in a grocery store. I'm glad Jikasei Mensho is still here. Their sister restaurant on Geary is only open for dinner with a very long wait. Jikasei Mensho is a good lunch option if you've always wanted to try their ramen without waiting for at least an hour.

Tempted to give 3 stars b/c of last week, but meh, I do like their ramen a lot!I love Mensho ramen. The one on Geary is great, but the wait is often too long for me. I like this place b/c it's faster and more low-key (crappy parking aside). But when I went twice last week, both times the restaurant was closed with no notice. The first time, I thought they just closed early, as I showed up 15 min before the official closing time. I went back the next day at noon, and they were STILL closed. The market store folks told me the restaurant was abruptly closed a few days ago, without any explanation or sign. Maybe the owner had a family emergency? Either way, according to the market employees, their online order platform was still open, and people were putting in (paid) orders, showing up and realizing there's no one there. This annoying situation aside, though, this place is honestly delicious. It's not as easy to drive to or park at, but the setup is very convenient, almost fast food-ish. I'm a huge fan, but next time I'm definitely calling in first to make sure they're open.

I was doing research on lunch spots on the way to downtown and was craving ramen. I saw that the menu was customizable so I decided on this place. Sadly, the menu has since changed. There are two options for broth ramen and several options for tsukemen. Since it was much first time, I got the non-spicy option and added eggplant. It was a bit pricey - $23 with the eggplant iirc. Broth was thick and flavorful. Everything tasted good, but there was something missing in the ambiance / experience. Eating ramen in a plastic takeout bowl with a small takeout spoon just doesn't feel right.

I'm a huge fan of the Mensho in the tenderloin, so I was really excited to try this place. The restaurant sits in The Market, along with a couple other small restaurants. I ordered the spicy ramen and it was SO good. The broth was so flavorful, the noodles were perfectly cooked, and there was so much delicious pork and toppings.Overall the ramen was amazing, but don't expect too much in terms of service/ambiance, as it's more of a quick lunch break spot.

I had a spicy ramen bowl and was very pleased. It was a lot of a food and packed with flavor. They did not skimp on toppings, which is good cause the bowl is a little pricey (though I suppose that's just sf prices these days).

In my search for good ramen in San Francisco I was not prepared to run into something delicious inside the former Twitter X building . I ran into Jikasei Mensho which is part of Mensho Inc. along with Mensho Tokyo in San Francisco which are associated brands for which I personally labeled the Shogun of Ramens. The Jikasei Mensho menu was interesting and I was ready to try it . Although Twitter later known as X has left the building I had to try their menu an item called the Ramen X. The bowl of Ramen X contained a delicious Chicken, Kombu, Porcini, Shiitake & Vegetable Soup, a thick House-made Japanese Mochi Wheat Noodles, Pork Chashu, Green Onion, Wood Ear Mushrooms, Sesame Seeds, Narutomaki. I just added the Xtra OG Spicy Sauce and yellow onion and it was a thick noodles slurp worthy and tasty. This ramen was deep with ingredients but had a favorable spice with each slurp. The noodles are made fresh daily. The different texture of the ramen made each bite and sip so enjoyable. Having the Ramen X is almost like having the kitchen sink in a ramen bowl with that tasty broth it was worth every slurp. The Ramen X has taken off with a flight of flavor which landed safely in my mouth. The Shogun of Ramen is farm to bowl if you know you know if you don't, let's go Inside the former Headquarters of Twitter or X building to Jikasei Mensho in the heart of Market street in San Francisco

Oh you'll love this place. Jikasei Mensho is well known in Japan and parts of Asia, so travelers from all over the world get off the beaten path to come here to enjoy the food and ambience... and it's not really off the beaten path. The store sits in the corner of the ground floor market store at 1355 Market street. Major tech companies like Airbnb and X are near by, so you meet a lot of cool and interesting people. I kinda get the service feeling of the Netflix show Tokyo Diner, but I wish this place would open late. Get the chicken spicy ramen!

Came here and ordered the spicy ramen during my lunch break. This place is located inside the marketplace, and there is a decent amount of seating. I ordered from a kiosk, and there was no one at the counter until someone brought out bowls for customers. All dine-in and take-out orders are served in a thin plastic bowl, which was scalding hot to the touch when I was carrying it to my seat. The ramen was fresh and chewy and the chashu was tender, however it was not worth the price point of $20. I thought the amount of toppings were just okay. It probably would've been better with an egg. I was unsure if the broth had a lot of peppercorn flavor or if the numbing I felt from eating this ramen was from a peanut allergy, so make sure you do not make the mistake that I did and ask if there are any allergens. Overall, it was fine, but nothing to rave about.

I've never had anything less than delicious here so I can't give less than 5 stars, HOWEVER it should be noted that there's only one employee, so if he's ever sick or stuck in traffic the place will be closed despite posted hours. Have patience and keep coming back to support this amazing little establishment, just have a backup plan because their posted hours aren't guaranteed. Personally my backup plan is La Cuisine Cafe one block away. it has more than one employee so it's always open and makes great sandwiches.

Noodles are perfectly chewy and loved all the toppings on my extra spicy chicken ramen (with a hint of sichuan numbing spice). The menu was a little different than what I had seen on Yelp so it probably rotates. Taking a star off since it was expensive for a bowl but regardless, great for an occasional treat.
