We recently dined at House of Prime Rib and were served by Justin at the tail end of the evening. Justin's service was on point, made great drink recommendations- the Riesling and Dirty Martini were fantastic. He also walked us through the menu and checked in on us frequently. The table-side preparation of the salad was fun to watch! Dining on a weekday at 10pm might not be ideal for many, but the upside is the restaurant was thinning out and it was easier to have a more intimate conversation as opposed to the noisy atmosphere when the restaurant was full.At any rate, ask to be seated in Justin's section next time you visit, he'll take great care of you!

This is THE restaurant everyone knows about in SF. Often requiring you to book months in advance for evening dinners, it'll take some work before you can get in. Luckily you can line up at the door when they open at 4 pm on the weekends to see if they take walk-ins.Food-wise, it's traditional English fare. Surprisingly their salad is a highlight, which they mix in front of you by spinning a chilled bowl on ice. When it comes to the meat, having tried most of them I recommend getting the English Cut. While it's thinner, it's better able to absorb the sauce and is much more flavorful compared to the others. Plus a bonus: if you finish your slice, you can add a small additional cut free of charge. With dim lights, a wine bar, and leather seats, this is the PRIME place for special occasions or get-togethers. If you're looking for an old-timey, Victorian-era vibe, this is your spot.

House of Prime RibI booked this steakhouse on the night of my trip to San FranciscoEach steak is very big. I shared one with two female friendsI recommend the classic thick cut of steakhouse of prime rib cutWe chose the doneness of medium well and it felt just right~Side dishessour doughI really like their dinner rolls!! The butter is saltier than usualsignature spinning saladThe waiter will make salad on the spot as an appetizer. It's the first time I saw a big plate of salad for each person! The taste is refreshing and delicious! The side dishes for steak are creamed corn and creamed spinach, both of which are very good, with a strong corn milk flavor~They also have a hidden ruleIf you are not full after the set meal, you can order a second cut, which is free! For 8 of us, plus tax and tip, the final cost per person was about 90

A huge checkmark goes on my bucket list of fine dining establishments to try in the City by the Bay! House of Prime Rib or HOPR is a both a landmark & a legendary institution that's been keeping things just as they were - perfectly marbled prime rib, chilled martinis, and a side of tradition. In a city that loves to reinvent itself, that's a rare - or medium rare, depending on how you like your steak cooked - and a continuing legacy for diners and tourists alike.Upon arrival to the restaurant, we were greeted by a large crowd of diners waiting to be seated - and our reservation was at 5:30 p.m. & we had just gotten out of the rideshare that we had booked from the East Bay - right at 5:29 p.m. on the dot! Whew! We've heard from our friends & colleagues alike that if you were late on your reservation, you & your party would be moved to the back of the line. After checking in at the reception desk, Gus the maitre'd escorted us to our table. We were then transported to a massive & intriguing dining atmosphere - and felt that we were time machine'd back to an Olde English feast at a medieval castle in the wee lad years of England. Such history adorn the walls, and the artwork and furnishings depict scenes from tales as old as time. The atmosphere is very classy but with a casual feel, you almost feel like you're at home during the whole process. Parking can be a bear but they offer valet parking, but I strongly suggest to your rideshare (Lyft, Uber, or even Waymo!) - and be prepared for a little wait once you get there, so sit at the bar, and order something while you pass the time away. It's easy to see why the House of Prime Rib is a San Francisco dining landmark. As soon as you enter its historic doors on Van Ness, you feel like you are time traveling back to an era when dining out was a special occasion rather than a regular activity. I've never gotten a chance to eat there mostly because I lean towards chicken, or seafood or more exotic options when dining out. A restaurant with "Prime Rib" in its name would never spark enough interest for me. The surprise was that I really enjoyed it, and now understand why the House of Prime Rib has been in business since the 1940s.The decor is done up in dark wood, warm amber light, and roomy upholstered booths. Separate dining rooms allow a more comfortable and quiet setting. After being seated we were presented with a fresh loaf of baked sourdough bread and our menus. I enjoyed opening the menu and seeing roughly five different options, all variations of the same item -- prime rib. Yes, prime rib and lots of it. The only differences being cut and size. Except for the fish option, offered to those not a fan of the house specialty. We enjoyed a nice Napa Cabernet Sauvignon and soon our dinner salads arrived, or I should say the salad presentation, which was nothing short of impressive, arrived. During the tableside preparation, our server Mateen quietly remarked "no one leaves here hungry" when he saw my eyes widen at the salad's size placed in front of me. The salad was crisp, fresh, flavorful, and perfectly chilled. My homie next to me said outloud, "I could eat this every day!" LOL! Foreal though, just the salad itself is HELLA good! (and you have to have your vegetables on the daily!)After the salad course, we were introduced to our tableside carver. Our dinners were prepared and soon we were faced with a plate brimming with the House of Prime Rib's specialty cut of beef, creamed spinach, Yorkshire pudding, mashed potatoes/loaded baked potato, and au jus gravy. Homemade horseradish saucers (mild, medium & spicy) also accompanied the meal. The aroma alone defined this as comfort food, but soon we dug into the most tender, flavorful prepared prime rib. The side dishes were all wonderful, and very rich. Even though we were stuffed, we HAD to at least sample dessert - and selected three different ones: Creme Bruleé, the Monster Chocolate Cake, and the Bread Pudding. I have absolutely no regrets - overall, I would definitely recommend HOPR - and when a restaurant has a specialty & they've had more than 75 years to perfect it, it's hard to go wrong! This is truly a San Francisco landmark that continues its legacy to fine dining!

Such a unique and fun experience! Staff are attentive and it's clear this is an incredibly well-run establishment. I appreciate the indulgence and generous portions! This is a gluttonous Disneyland for prime rib. Overall, definitely should try at least once! The menu here is small but nearly everything is perfect: - Sourdough: comes out piping hot and still steaming inside, with fantastic flavor! I had 3 slices and also took the leftovers home haha- Salad: The chopped boiled egg adds body that makes the fresh, light salad still super satisfying. The vinaigrette was also perfect -- tangy and balanced without the acidity that makes your cheeks pucker.- Baked potato: This potato was enormous haha. Definitely a bigger portion than the mashed potatoes so keep that in mind! I originally chose it over the mashed because it'd be more portable/easier to take the leftovers home, and the huge potato ended up lasting me another whole meal and snack.- Creamed spinach: One of the only sides I didn't really love only because it was quite salty. But eaten in combination with everything else, it wasn't bad at all.- Yorkshire pudding: While this did act as the perfect vessel for the jus, the bread was SO bland. I could've done without this and happily taken more sourdough instead.

First time at HOPR and we had a great experience. We had our reservations booked 9 months in advance. I suggest arriving about 20 mins early to find parking. Street parking was limited on Sunday evening so you may need to park a bit further or do valet. We were served bread and butter right as we were seated. I was told to not fill up on the appetizers but I couldn't resist. The warm bread and butter combo was so good! Salad was great as well and had the perfect amount of dressing. I love that you also get a table side performance too. My husband and I both ordered the King Henry Cut, medium and medium rare. We got both of ours seared but it ended up being overcooked, which we should've took into consideration when ordering. If you plan on getting it seared, I recommend getting it one level down. The meat was still very tender and seasoned perfectly. All the sides complimented the meal. The creamed spinach was a bit too salty in my opinion. I personally liked the corn more. Half spinach and half corn is an extra $2.Our server was Ben and he was friendly but service could've been a bit better. He seemed really busy and didn't check up on us that often. I overheard him explaining to another table the ingredients for the salad and asked if they were celebrating a special occasion but he didn't do that for our table. My husband also finished his slice and wanted to order a second but he never stopped by nor did he ask when he did. Only offered us dessert but we were too full by then. We got our sides and leftovers packed. Be sure to take the bone with you if you ordered the King Henry cut! Although pricey, this place is a good treat for special occasions and worth trying at least once.

The famous House of Prime Rib! I finally got to try this spot and it very much lived up to the hype. The menu is condensed, so you know it's gonna be some high quality goods. The prime rib was amazing and tender. The flavor of the au jus was fantastic. They give you 3 selections of horseradish that ranges in spiciness. It just has it all. You always gotta go with the second cut of meat too which is complimentary. The house salad was great as well. You are treated to a show where they make it right in front of you. The drinks are massive too. You essentially get two drinks whenever you order one. So make sure you pace yourself ! This is fantastic spot for your biggest celebrations. We came here for a bachelor party and got seated at 9pm. It was the only opening but well worth

What a great dinner the 17 of us had here. We get this reservation I believe a year in advance. There was a line getting into the restaurant at 4:30pm. Our reservation was at 5:00pm. Since the restaurant wasn't seating anyone it was packed with people at the entrance and the bar area. Our waitress was Ira? She was very efficient and took care of all the customers in the bar area where the 17 of us were seated. On to the food. The salad was perfect this time. It always looksLike there is too much dressing but it was perfectly dressed and just the right amount of salad. The round bread arrives warm and great to eat right away. It's just hard to slice. The creamed corn and creamedSpinach was excellent. The King Henry the 8th cut gets smaller every time. My bone is as even small but it was perfectly cooked. Very tender and very well seasoned. The tobacco and red horse radish we requested were delicious and went well with the prime rib. The loaded baked potato was perfect. I inquired about the corn bread and Ira came through. My English trifle was delicious. Even the coffee was good. The lemon drop was perfectThis time.

As if HOPR needed another review after the 9.5k+ they've accumulated over the years.Believe it or not, this was my first time dining here even after being born and raised in the Bay Area! We had an early reservation at 4 pm which was near opening time. The restaurant wasn't full at this point and the host was able to seat us promptly. The inside of the restaurant felt like a time capsule transporting us back in time. The layout was romantic albeit a bit dark and wasn't too noisy (we were sat in the back room near the restrooms). Our server was nice-enough. He came off a bit rude with snarky remarks at the beginning of our meal. Thankfully he warmed up with more personable interactions later in the meal. The server assistants, however, were really hospitable and kind. The food was great -- honestly no complaints! We got the King Henry cut, 1/2 creamed corn and 1/2 creamed spinach (+$2), loaded mashed potatoes (+$2). I couldn't even finish half of my meat but my fiance devoured his cut and even went for the complimentary seconds! TLDR;* prime rib prices $64 - $69 and includes all your sides (up charges for some)* you can ask for a free second cut only after you finished your initial cut and you are not allowed to take the second cut home* you will also be able to request additional sides with the second cut at no cost * street parking is plentiful but valet is convenient and $19
