Fujiyama-Ya Japanese Restaurant

I can't believe in all of my years growing up in SF I hadn't tried this gem until now!Let's start with the ambiance- what beautiful small mom and pop shop. You kind of get teleported back to the days when shops were cutely theme by their owners versus looking more generic and comparable to other restaurants. I absolutely love the booth seating and the wall decors just took me back in time to when I was a kid and every single mom and pop restaurant in SF used to have this magical vibe...Anyways back to the main tops of food and service. The service is so absolutely top notch and despite me and my roomies being there for the first time we were treated so sweetly just like regulars we saw there. Absolutely have to love a place where you're doted on a bit by sweet aunties and grandmas, right?The FOOD THOUGH. HOLY MOLY. SO REASONABLY PRICED AND DARE I SAY UNDERPRICED FOR HOW AMAZING EVERYTHING WAS. We went with multiple combos, one for each of us, and ate family style. Despite being a hole in the way the sashimi was pretty darn fresh and not too fishy. The sukiyaki was amazing and warming to my soul. You know that ratatouille moment? Yup. Full body childhood comforting memories took over as I ate one of the most comfortable meals I've had in my life. Oh, and the tempura is pretty good too. Definitely highly recommend anyone try this place because it is an absolute stable to me now and I definitely see why they've been open for so long. Arigatou mina-sama! We'll definitely be back!!!

This restaurant is so symbiotically in my lane, that I wish to time travel back just so I could have more dinners here. I'd gone maybe once or twice to Fujiyama growing up. Who knew this cosy quaint spot in the neighborly Sunset district was doing all the real deal Japanese home cooking and presenting sushi fresh and on par with any specialty sushi resto? Well... I did, way before Yelp existed.Fuji Yama has been a main-stay for a few decades. It's a radiant neighborhood treasure people kind of stumble upon. The menu is solid home cooking. Chirashi is a sweet platter of super fresh sashimi pieces on a generous layer of sushi rice dotted with "tamago" (egg) and just a sprinkle of shredded nori. Sushi combo is also fantastic. Because octopus on menus saddens me, I request the "tako" be swapped out for something else, and the kitchen kindly accommodates. Chicken teriyaki skewers are grilled chicken and green bell pepper in a sweet teriyaki sauce.All the food is simple and filling -- everything you'd want in Japanese home cooking, plus some legit tasty sushi items. Staff are lovely nice and efficient. I'm a full blown fan of Fuji Yama ya. For me, it's the down to earth, perfect cosy place to chill with a few peeps and have Japanese comfort cuisine that hits the spot every time.

Came in at 8pm on Sunday and the restaurant was pretty empty.Originally ordered Hawaii hand roll, Alaska hand roll, Dynamite roll, and tonkatsu dinner.They cut their fish here pretty thick. The Alaska and Hawaii hand rolls were chewy.Tonkatsu dinner was solid 5 for $11.95.Ordered an additional side salad and agedashi tofu.This restaurant uses firm tofu, which I personally don't prefer. Side salad was a solid 4 ! They included raw white mushrooms, which is different... Otherwise, great service and atmosphere.

Can't tell you how much I love this place and the amazing family who runs it. We used to go all the time when we lived in the outer sunset and was so happy to get back here when visiting SF recently. Great sushi always reasonably priced. The service is top notch.

Came back here again with my boyfriend to so he could try the Beef Sukiyaki, MAMA MIAAAA it's so good

Always pleasure being here and enjoying some homemade japanese food, esp sukiyaki but recently it's too hot for some soup. Cannot go wrong with their teriyaki here, I got the Salmon and Beef teriyaki combo. I was more than enough full as we ordered sushi on the side! Salmon was cooked to perfection, not dry, more moist, I believe it could be steamed. Definitely would be back!

Love this place for a casual weeknight dinner with good sushi and the prices are unbeatable!Their sashimi comes with salad and miso soup. The interior is cozy and they usually get pretty busy here.

A local staple in the sunset for whenever you're craving sushi and don't want to spend lots of money. It's affordable sushi that hits the spot! It's a small and cozy place and can get crowded so get there early. We ordered the sunset roll and 49ers roll which are two of my favorites! I love the scallop and different types of fish. We also got the combo G which comes with tempura and sashimi (we got tuna for our sashimi) the tempura was very crispy! The combos also come with rice and miso soup which is a nice addition.

Unpretentious quality little Japanese restaurant. Good food & good prices. Lemon Chicken is delicious. No fat. Esther, the main waitress is very sweet.

I don't like to write a bad review, but I feel it's my duty to warn you all that this might be the worst sushi I've ever had in SF. I'm giving an extra star because the ladies working there were very nice.The rolls were tasteless and the wrong texture. The "Sushi rice" was just regular short rice with zero flavor. The tempura sushi in the two rolls we got was clearly made hours before using and were ice cold and rock hard. They used imitation crab meat in their California rolls! That was a first for me in California. I can go on but I'm not trying to be mean, or vindictive or anything, just want to warn you all. To be fair, we got take out and it was late, but home is only a few minutes away and we get take out all the time from our favorite spot, only a few blocks away and it's never been a problem. This place does have two things going for it. It's like half the price of other places and it's open a little late. The late opening is why we ended up there. So, if you're after late night, budget sushi, then maybe this spot's for you.
