This place checked all the boxes of an excellent SF sushi place, especially the all-important one: fresh, delicious fish. But what really sets this place apart and makes it special is the almost three-page tapas menu, which includes light bites categorized by cuisine (seafood, veggie, or "meat," e.g., beef). For mains, I ordered the chirashi and my wife ordered the 10-piece omakase nigiri -- each was delicious, with little further explanation necessary. But the tapas, oh man. So good, and such a fun part of the dining experience here to mix it up from your everyday great sushi (not that there's anything wrong with great sushi, of course!). We ordered a variety of items from the seafood and meat tapas menus -- carpaccio, scallops, ika and uni, and smelt fillets. All were excellent, but I especially loved the smelt fillets, which came with a side of salt that made them especially flavorful. All in all, a wonderful meal, made so -- in my opinion -- because of the diverse array of tapas to complement the stellar sushi.

Cozy sushi and tapas spot in Mission. Service was great, very attentive. Food we tried were all good. We ordered- Hamachi carpaccio - 5/5 a must! $13Mentaiko udon - 5/5 a must, chewy noodles so flavorful I would come back for these!Waygu carpaccio- $15Unagi don - flavorful $26 5-piece Omasake nigiri - $28 this was my least favorite as somehow the fish was flavorless. Overall a great Japanese tapas place with sake.

Fenikkusu serves some interesting dishes that you wouldn't find at your typical Japanese restaurant. As the name says they serve tapas (ie small portion) dishes and specialize in sushi. The mini kaisen don is the real star of the menu and is a well thought out balance of sashimi rice, aromatics and salmon roe for some brininess. The mentaiko pasta is also a really awesome dish. I would come back here for these two dishes. I also enjoyed the corn fritters and the mackerel. I would stay away from the oxtail pot and is the main reason why I didn't give a five star rating.

Me and my mansss enjoyed the Valentine's Day pre fix menu which came with a variety of dishes, including sashimi, omakase nigiri, hamachi crudo, udon, yuzu brussel sprouts, trip tip katsu I mean I could go on. We particularly enjoyed the thiccc and saucy enoki mushrooms. The flavor was buss down! The service was quick! The sake was flowing! I need to come back asap!

The ambience of this place is so cute and cozy. We got the matcha IPA which was so smooth. Then we got the mushroom in miso sauce, escolar, and 8pc omakase. The chef makes it in front of you if you sit at the bar and he was super sweet!Amazing service and even more amazing food.

Before we walked in we noticed the sign outside the restaurant stating they don't offer, "Fancy American style rolls." I thought that was interesting to see. Once inside there was another sign stating they only use koshihikari rice. When I asked the chef what's so special about the rice he said it's nothing special just that it is short grain while other sushi restaurants use medium grain. I actually never noticed that, (except at some buffets) and I appreciated that he explained it to me. We came in on a Friday night shortly after they opened without a reservation and sat at the chef's counter next to the wall mounted fireplace. The interior had a cozy ambiance. My partner ordered a 10pcs omakase and an anago nigiri. Well actually he ordered it for me. We tried anago for the first time in Tokyo recently and absolutely loved it and prior to arriving we knew they served it, which was the reason we came here. I ordered the miso walu, anago tempura and squid legs. The food arrived quickly. The squid legs were tender and lightly fried as was the anago tempura. I didn't expect the miso walu to be cooked but that's my fault because it wasn't listed as a nigiri but as a tapas instead. I later realize I prefer my walu eaten raw and my anago grilled. When the anago nigiri arrived my partner tried a bite and the chef immediately told him to eat the whole piece and by taking a small bite he "destroyed" the experience. We were both completely thrown off by the way he said it. He seemed obviously offended. We are sorry! Prior to visiting Japan we knew to eat sushi in one bite but we are not in Japan and we like to share our food. We felt really bad and honestly that killed the whole dining experience for us. Though he did offer another anago nigiri on the house for my partner to try which he declined at first. After I ate it in one bite I wanted him to try it and the chef gladly made one for us. The anago nigiri was one of our favorite things we ate. My partner enjoyed his omakase.

I can't believe the last time I went to Fenikkusu was all the way back in spring last year - it way too good to be missing it for so long! This time I tried:- three-piece sake nigiri - my one true fish love is salmon always and forever - it was so fresh and buttery here- mini kaizen don - had the most adorable presentation/I wish I could keep the baby wooden spoon. The fish was a good variety and again very fresh but did not include sake so I'm glad I ordered that separately! My favorite part was the uni which was SO creamy and the perfect touch of sweet. Lovely place and it seems like you can count on being able to get a table quite easily!

Came here for an early dinner on a Thursday with some friends. I would def make a reservation if you come on a weekend or even for a later dinner. We got a couple of things to share but the dish that stood out the most was definitely this don with ikura, toro, and uni. After mixing it it was the perfect bite. The mentaiko udon was also really good as well as the hamachi carpaccio. This is such a great spot for a smaller group dinner or a cute date night. I will definitely be coming back to try out their other dishes!

I only took one photo but the omakase nigiri here is always so incredible! I've come several times and every time the food is so yummy. Also got the Brussels with apple, miso soup, and gyoza. I recommend it all. If you're looking for delicious omakase - this is the place.
