Rebekah T. "I like shopping small businesses. Local produce stores often provide prices and that fresh picked quality like your local farmer's market. So why not save money and help out a small local business.I've been coming to this Produce market since I was a kid helping my grandmother gather what she needed to put together meals. I remember this place being the low cost place to shop then and it still is. I come here typically to buy the usual fruits and veggies, my staples. But I often come here after buying crab next door at Fresh Meat Market. I get the onions, shallots, garlic, lemons and herbs I need to make that crab so tasty. I loaded up on packaged spices for .70 each, so I can replenish my supplies. I'd rather save some money and refill my containers and get exactly what I need and maybe something I haven't tried before. Be smart, save money and shop local."

They also have a sale section--Overripe fruit, but still delicious for cheap?! Nom!They carry everything I need for a great easy dinner, or light snacking. They have nice meat selection too. I love the chicken breasts--all in tact, sans bones! (Although, I prefer the bones for making stock.) They look so fresh too! I've got to try their cuts of beef next time!Prices = reasonable. Some things are on the pricier side ($4.99 strawberries v. $2.99, different brands.) Cash and plastic accepted.Service = friendly. I wish I spoke something besides English... you know, like, uhm, Spanish?!! Sigh.... Parking... well, I usually take the bus for this one. But street parking can be found, or if you know exactly what you need, you can turn on the hazards and double park right out front, for 3 minutes before the meter mobile swings on by...... haha"

Don't bother with the alternative brands that don't look familiar. Don't bother with the lines. Go to Golden Farmer Market instead. Much cheaper, it's likely got what you're looking for, and you can be in and out in five minutes if you know what you want. I'd say I do the majority of my shopping here now as they mostly have what I need. Chicken, beef, milk, eggs, all your basic necessities and then some. I saw an amazing collection of instant ramens on the side and a huge variety of fruit and produce in the front. I call it my neighborhood tip, but it might be more like my neighborhood secret. You'll hardly bump into other shoppers here and you can check out almost immediately. And I'm sharing this secret with you friend, in hopes that you like this neighborhood grocery store as much as I do."

Shirley N. "This speaks specifically to one Peruvian item. Due to the current pandemic I've been taking Zoom cooking classes. Different cuisines. The most recent one is a Chifa Peruvian dish. Chifa has Chinese origins in Lima Peru. Ethnic Chinese that immigrated to Peru. When I was in Lima several years ago, the local tour guide said Chinese moms would shout out to their kids to come in to eat. In Cantonese Chifa translates to "eat rice". I needed aji Amarillo chili pepper paste. The cooking class suggested buying it on Amazon. But hey I live in San Francisco where there are many diverse ethnic groups. Sure enough I did a Google. It said Casa Lucas has a good variety of Latin American food products including Peruvian. I took a snapshot of the aji Amarillo chili pepper paste. Went into the grocery store. Showed them my snapshot. Bingo. Got my jar of aji for 50% less than Amazon price."

Union Street Produce Company

Daniel B. "Union Street Produce Company is the prototypical neighborhood grocery store. Located at the corner of Union St and Mason St in Russian Hill, this small corner store is popular for its fresh and affordable produce, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and super friendly service. These guys are on the ground level of a four-story apartment building. The Powell-Mason cable car runs right by the store. One of my good friends who lives nearby in North Beach introduced me to this place during my last visit to San Francisco. We stopped here while walking back to his apartment. This is his favorite grocery store. He recently moved apartments within San Francisco and wanted to move to an apartment within a radius such that he could continue shopping at Union Street Produce Company on a regular basis. That it affects the decision of where one moves should be all you need to know about this place. The store looks like your typical, longtime, in-the-city, neighborhood market. The Union St side has open-air bins and carts of fruits and vegetables (apples, oranges, etc.) ready for the taking outside on the sidewalk. The inside is as colorful as can be with an assortment of fresh fruits and veggies including peaches, nectarines, grapes, plums, and melons, red, yellow, and green bell pepper, cucumbers, green beans, snow peas, jalapenos, squash, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, artichoke, corn, mushrooms, cabbage and lettuce (of various types), potatoes, onion, scallions, garlic, and much more. They have baggies of dried fruits (e.g. kiwi, figs) and nuts. We picked up kale, spinach, carrots, apples, and ginger to make juice at home. And there's more than just produce. While the store isn't very big, the owners have managed to stock just enough of food and ingredients to suffice it as a one-stop for all your grocery needs. They have pastas, cereals, milk, cheese, and other dairy products, condiments, seasonings/spices, canned and jarred goods, beverages, household products and cleaning supplies, Ziploc bags, snacks, noodles, breads, and chocolate to name a handful. In addition, they carry frozen foods and meat (chicken, beef, sausage) and fish. No, it's nowhere big as a Safeway, Lucky, or Trader Joe's, but it packs quite a punch for its size.Shopping here also feels good because you're supporting a small local business staffed by genuinely nice people. Prices are reasonable and credit cards are accepted."

It was fun to browse this market in West Portal. It's been in existence for 20 years and run by a Korean guy. They have a lot of fruits and vegetables and it's not a meat market(or seafood). I was so pleasantly surprised at how clean, spacious and well stocked this place was. The shelves were stocked with all kinds of Latino related products and the fresh meat counter was fairly large. I decided to purchase some snacks here; a couple of Gelatin desserts and a huge loaf of Pan Dulce sweet bread, which were all very delicious. The staff Linda was very friendly and allowed me to take photos of the store for my Yelp Review.I will start coming here more often while on my way to work to buy more snacks and probably some fresh fruit, such as avocadoes or mangoes. Their shelves look taller! So you can get meat from the butcher in the back, veggies on far right side when you enter, soups, noodles, peanut butters, cookies, fancy chocolates, snacks from all over. I think they also sell coffee, pastries, cheeses. More fruits, veggies, flowers in the front and outside. Prices are a tad more expensive than some of the grocery stores on Clement, but they carry a lot more varieties and some higher-end brands that I would normally find at Cal-Mart, so I feel like that convenience commensurate with the higher prices. Also, they are very polite here which is like a breath of fresh air. It was fun going through Dean's frozen section which featured many Eastern European favorites and then heading over to the jarred and canned section to find a vast assortment of pickled vegetables and canned fish. There was a sale on some sardines today, from Portugal no less so I picked up a can for lunch and paired it with some crusty bread and cheese. It brought me right back to Spain (yes, I know it's not Portugal but it's close). It was delicious and was about half the price I'd pay from any other American grocer! Know your prices friends! I also spotted a small bar of halva which I'm curious to try later. I really liked that I didn't have to commit to a large square of it.I also picked up the ingredients I had planned to use for meal prep this week. It was a little more expensive than my Asian shops but not too much so. The quality of almost everything looked really good today and there were also staff sorting through the produce and removing the ones past their prime."

If you are short for time and only want to go to 1 store, this might not be the best option depending on what you are looking for but they do have the things you will need to make a tasty meal. Some things are definitely more than you'll pay elsewhere (most of the crackers for example). Pasta and canned goods prices were okay; in general maybe a bit higher than some places but not too much so. For vegetables, they do have some nice deals and stuff you may not find elsewhere (heirloom tomatoes, early girl tomatoes, variety of fruit and different vegetables). I felt like the tomatoes alone were worth the trip (grape tomatoes for cheaper than I saw anywhere else, beautiful heirloom tomatoes at a decent price, and early girl tomatoes which can be hard to find in the winter [I haven't had them yet but they looked fresh]).There aren't a ton of options for the meat counter but they are all quality items and the prices show. For example, the only chicken they had was Mary's chicken. The cheese selection was great especially for a small store and they had some nice meat, olive and peppers (homemade?) options for charcuterie boards. They also sell premade meals. Probably not the place you should buy everything you need but it's a good supplemental option and there were some gems. I guess they have a few locations so I would be back to this one if I'm in the area and would also check out one of the other stores if convenient too."

I appreciate how the butcher had a conversation with me in his broken English about oxtails and his favorite seasonings for it. Now that's some pretty awesome customer service if I do say so myself. The produce here is also fresh, the prices are competitive and you can always find lots of fresh fruit up in the front luring you in. What they do lack though is some fresh pastries and a fly swatter around said pastries. I love baked good and cookies with sugar in every cubic centimeter but by the looks of the case, so do all the flies within a one block radius. This is also a great place for pinatas if you're looking for some backyard fun for a great price. Jess C. "Casa Guadalupe is supposedly better than its nearby counterpart down the street, Casa Guadalupe #2. I found the variety, freshness of produce, and prices to be comparable, but I would still definitely recommend Guadalupe if you're looking for a clean grocer nearby.TIPS ON SHOPPING AT MEXICAN GROCERS (Warning: I think I shop smart, but may come off sounding a bit like a homeless person):* Amazing prices: Most Mexican grocers are pretty dirty, Casa Guadalupe is an anomaly. Other than that, the prices and produce are good but nothing special compared to other Mexican Marts.* Where to go: My favorite Mexican grocers in the Mission are 24th St. Bart, 16th St Bart, and around 20th (the foreign grocer). Casa would be part of the rotation if it were closer to me. You will find prices a fraction the cost of Safeway or Lucky, and equal or slightly lower in quality / freshness. You won't get the variety or freshness guarantee of top tier grocers like Whole Foods. * What to buy: You have to be flexible with your grocery list at places like these, often they do not carry what you want or if they do, they might be expensive or poor quality. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, bananas, onions, and sometimes garlic are usually safe items to buy and super cheap. Sometimes you will find great deals on organic kale, lettuce, and apples but these items are the ones who don't make it past the standards of higher end grocers (I assume) and are always slightly defective (but still mostly good!). * What not to buy: I would never buy meat at these places (I've smelled rancid meat wafting from their butchery), and be extra discerning about produce like peaches, berries (not organic), and other fruit (apples are ALWAYS bruised or rotten). You will sometimes find great deals on organic apples or veggies, but look out for rotting areas and bruises which are inevitable."
