Shirley H. "The best restaurant for dim sum in the SF Bay Area! It's been my favorite for years and I return every time I visit. Their dim sum is high quality. Some of my favorites are the purple rice paper shrimp rolls, the salted egg custard lava steamed buns, and the Peking duck - it's literally the best around. The two locations in SF are very spacious. They have private rooms available for large parties and their venue is available for wedding banquets as well. Lots of tables and bright lighting, but don't be fooled, HL Peninsula is so popular that they are always busy, even on weekdays! Be prepared for a wait, especially on busier days like weekends and prime Chinese brunch hours."

Chena N. "When I was younger, I was known as the "FAN TONG 飯桶" aka Rice Bucket, because I ate SO much rice and I HAD to eat rice for lunch and dinner in order to be full. Obviously, at my old age now, I had to cut out the carbs so it was a treat to be trying out Rice Monster (located inside Social Eatery). .:: FOOD ::.Chicken Feet and Pork Ribs $15.99 (+$1.99 Chinese Sausage add on): chicken feet, sauteed pork ribs, chinese sausage. Comes in a clay pot and a very known canto dish, 煲仔飯. The rice on the bottom crisps up as it sits on the pot . Very simple dish. Wish the pork ribs were more on the salty savory side, it had more sweetness to it, and I wish the chicken feet had more meat to it. .:: Service / Ambiance / Parking ::.Terrible Service. Pretty much self service on everything. You order on your phone through QR code. Wait was super long and unorganized. Located inside Social Eatery, but there's no waitlist, no way to put your name down. You literally just wait at the door in line (very narrow if I may add), until a table opens up. They need to at least let you write your name down. My friend wanted to ask if we could add something on our order and the waiter was so rudely annoyed. He did a big sigh, rolled his eyes and was like no your order is in you cannot add anything. It was SO hard to flag ANYONE down, we just went up and grabbed things ourselves: napkins, to go box, etc. All the waiters literally did was bring food out and thats it. The place has a cute little exterior outside, when I went it was during Halloween week, it was decked out in Halloween decors. The inside had logs / wooden vibes as table. There were ones in high chairs, ones with benches, ones with low tables/ chairs. Parking was scary. The parking lot is SO narrow and small. I feel like its asking for an accident to happen. I would recommend parking on the street, its much more space and safer."

Depending on which combo set you order there are different sides available. We often opt for the sticky rice, pan fried radish cakes, or Chinese donut wrapped in rice roll. Just a note if you go too early they might not have gotten their shipment of Ho fun (wide flat rice noodles). However you can always chose from their selection of vermicelli or udon noodles if you opt for a soup noodle dish. Make sure to bring cash as they do not accept cash."

Elaine Y. "Came to Old Pier Hong Kong BBQ for dinner which offers both a la carte or "set" menu options. I say "set" only because you get to select from a small list for each category (soup, entrees, fish, etc) which is a pretty neat concept in my opinion. We went with the set for 4-5 and honestly, the food was probably enough for 6 modest appetites. And at $78, that's a pretty good value! My favorite dish of the night was the roast pork which had that nice crackling skin, crisp meat, and buttery fat. They also serve it with sugar which is something you don't see as often but very HK style. Other good dishes included the sautéed beans which were crisp and fresh, the crab and fish maw soup which wasn't too thick and featured a decent amount of both premium ingredients, and the pepper beef ribs which were tender and had good flavor. The onions were also carmelized nicely so they weren't just inedible filler (sorry, I'm not the biggest fan of raw onions).Service is as expected from a Chinese restaurant so don't set expectations too high. The floor is also kind of greasy so just watch your step."

With over 3k reviews, this place has to be good, right?! The fan of this place mainly love it. The place is small and only for pick up, no dine in or seating inside.. My faves here are the scallion bun which is big, super soft and buttery, and a steal for the portion. So delicious! I love bread! It's always best when you get it fresh. It almost never arrives home as I snack on it while going home. Their BBQ pork buns are good, too. We had their shrimp dumplings, baked pork bun, Shu main, egg tarts, scallion bun and more. With everything we bought, the price was very decent! It's best to go early but there is a wait in line. Going after lunch, there is only so much left and limited things to buy as they run out fast. I just wonder where they cook everything and I don't see a kitchen and this place is super tight inside even when customers line up ordering. All street parking so good luck finding one! I wish they were closer to our place or a second location with better parking. They don't speak very good English but as long as you point it out while saying it, you should be good but they are quick so make sure it's what you want. Oh and it's cash only!! Must try! Don't let the rating and line fool you. I think it's worth a try. I'm thinking of the scallion bun and I want some again! [5R,2025]"

Michael W. "Context: I came here for lunch with my family and arrived around 10:55am on a Sunday.Seating: When we first arrived there were plenty of open tables and no line. That being said, the staff will ignore you unless you walk up to them and get their attention, so we had to flag down wait staff to get a table. The silver lining is that they did seat us without our entire party being here, which is really nice since most places require the entire party to be here before being seated.Ambiance: Starting around 11:15 (once the restaurant filled up), it had the normal busy and bustling ambiance of your typical dim sum restaurant (minus the carts).Ordering: Ordering is done by marking how many of each dish you wanted off a menu, which was convenient! That being said, it took a long time for everything to come out. We were there for 1.5 hours and dishes were still coming out. We wanted to cancel two of our items since they took too long to come out and we were full. The wait staff only canceled one of them and marked the other as served / received even though we didn't get it. We tried to get them to take it off our bill, but they gave us complimentary orders of sesame balls and char siu bao to make up for it since they said it would be complicated to revise the bill. To be fair our group did order a lot of items. Make sure to double check your bill, especially if you ordered a lot of items or requested to have items removed from your bill if you didn't receive them before getting full.Taro Dumpling - 1/5: It was still cold on the inside and tasted sour, which it shouldn't have. They did try to make it up to us by giving us a complimentary order of pineapple custard buns.Pineapple Custard Buns - 4/5: Taste is pretty good and the had a nice color, but the inside was still doughy.Spicy Pig Ear - 4/5: In this dish, the pig ear pieces are cut in strips rather than thin slices, so the crunchy pieces of cartilage are more noticeable. Overall, the taste is pretty good and has a nice numbing taste / feeling. I do wish the spice / chili was more fragrant though.Shrimp Rice Roll - 5/5: The pieces of shrimp were pretty big and the dish is pretty tasty! It was exactly what we were looking for!Dumpling Items (Siu Mai, Har Gao, Scallop Dumpling, Chiu Chow Dumpling) - 5/5: Absolutely MASSIVE dumplings and all around pretty tasty! Would highly recommend!Chicken Feet - 4/5: These chicken must have been dinosaurs with how big these feet were! The flavor was pretty decent, but the feet themselves were not as soft as we'd like them.Portuguese Egg Tart - 4/5: Flavor was on point, but these were so flaky that they basically disintegrated the moment you picked them up.Egg Yolk Lava Buns - 4/5: Pretty standard, the taste was pretty good, the bun itself was nice an soft.Pork Spare Ribs - 5/5: Fresh out the steamer when it got to our table, tender, and the right amount of spicy.Lobster Yi Mein - 4/5: Tasty lobster and noodles with the right amount of bite / chew! We wish there was more in the dish though.Sesame Balls - 5/5: Tasty, not over cooked, and not too oily!Jasmine Tea - 5/5: Fragrant / fresh tea leaves that didn't need to be replaced the whole time we were there! And we had the tea refilled more times than I can count!Service - 3/5: The wait staff were really diligent about refilling tea and resolved all of our comments about our orders, but it did take some back and forth / haggling. Not to mention needing to flag down staff to get seated at the beginning."

Otherwise due to the prix fixe menu, the only choices were do you want to add a course of Peking Duck or a flight of wines. Have no worries you control freaks! Every course was very very very good. No one added the duck. At the time we were all sufficiently stuffed, but now I regret not having tried it. We shared the chocolate and ice cream dessert, which was pretty good but pricy. TLDR: great food, great servers, great people, great atmosphere. On a whim, visiting Chinatown, a quick google search for some chow fun led me to four kings. On the approach I joined a line forming at 530pm for a 600pm opening. People showing up at 530pm knew the lore. You cannot be seated into this restaurant unless you made reservations 3 weeks in advance and chances are they book up before you wake. BUT, if you line up before opening, 10 lucky ones get seated before the reservations roll in. With that said, my fiance and I counted the line in front of us, we were number 11 and 12. Finally 6pm rolls around and the whole line was pumped to share the excitement of being turned away temporarily with the promise of a seat in the next 30 mins to an hour. BOOM, the first 10 people get their seats and we go on a wait list. 30 mins no biggie. They were kind enough to send us a text while we browsed nearby souvenir shops. Finally being summoned, we were greeted by the kind hostess that lead us to our seats. There were all kind of exotic solid fusion items on the menu. We went with the steak chow fun, the pea shoots and spicey cabbage. All solid and delicious flavors. The staff was very cordial and our water glasses were never empty. Every interaction was warm and made me happy to be there. You know that feeling when you think the stripper is actually into you? Like it's convincing? No? Never been to a strip club before? Well now is your chance. Jkjk. The interactions are wholesome. You feel the love. The great food, warm staff and vibing with the others in line made this a beautiful evening. I would do it again."

They have a quick turnaround so you won't be waiting long even if there is a line. It is cash only but there are a few banks nearby in case you need to run to the ATM.We ordered #8, the stewed beef brisket and rice noodle soup and a side order of the steamed beef tripe. Both were delicious! The beef brisket was super juicy and tender, paired with thicker rice noodles and a couple pieces of vegetables. The noodles were a little over cooked but for a shop like this you can't expect the noodles to be perfectly al dente. The tripe was tender and chewy and served in some soy sauce. I can't vouch for the entire menu but navigating hole in the wall spots like this, usually each owns a handful of the staples you seek as you venture through the Chinese aunties and uncles throughout Chinatown fighting over cheap groceries and Chinese foods to start your Saturday or Sunday strong. I primarily pick up the shu mai, har gao, and baked barbecue pork buns. All seem to hit harder than all the spots nearby that we've tasted over a lifetime of living in the Bay Area. The shu mai are big and flavorful and lack fillers like bittermeon that I find at other places that I'm not the biggest fan of when I'm eating my **meat** dumplings (you know what I'm sayin'?). The barbecue pork buns are soft, chewy and have the perfect amount of barbecue pork inside and surpassed quality and taste from chinatowns here to Oakland. No matter when I've gone, there's always a line but orders are fulfilled quickly and I'm usually in and out in 5-15 minutes. As a Chinese American and look around at the people waiting in line and I love seeing all the different faces there that aren't just Chinese like myself, and I smile to myself that these people know what up and the neighborhood secret is out. Overall, I was happy with my recent visit. Food was good, the dining experience was enjoyable, but when it came to the bill...!!! I presented my credit card and the waitress told me that there will be a 3% charge for using a card. Many places only accept card if your bill met a certain minimum, which is certainly understandable, especially with mom & pop stores, to implement this policy since the credit card fees are quite high and it means they basically make little to no profit if you have a small bill. But charging for simply using a credit card is outrageous. There was no forewarning. Merchants are obligated to display all possible additional charges at the register or any place where it's viewable by the patron, such as on the menu. I didn't see any on the menu; but I admit, I don't know if it appeared at the register since I was dining in the restaurant and there was no reason to walk up to the register. I learned today that what they did was wrong. Effective July 1, 2024, California passed California Senate Bill 478, which made it "...illegal to surcharge credit card transactions in California...California businesses are required to disclose the total price for goods and services upfront to maintain transparency and protect consumers from being surprised by additional fees when it's time to pay.""
