Antigua Guatemala Restaurant offers a simple menu with traditional Gautemalan breakfast and lunch/dinner dishes. If you're looking for some good comfort food in a very chill environment, this is it!Two of us opted for the Pepian de Gallina, a delicious chicken stew with vegetables in a mildly spiced brown gravy. It was served with seasoned rice and two freshly made, delicious tortillas. One person made a meal out of side dishes that were quite good including a tamal Colorado and cooked corn on the cob with a drizzle of mayo, mustard, catsup, and cheese. For dessert we tried the platanos in mole sauce. This was new for us as we've only eaten chicken mole. The sauce was largely the same and mildly sweet. The people are friendly and very laid back. And the music is very mellow and nice.

We shared three small plates: pache, doblada, and platano en mole. The pache was very similar to a tamale, except that it was made of mashed potato, resulting in a slightly softer and finer-grained texture. The doblada was slightly crispy with a lot of tasty toppings. The mole was rich, moderately sweet, and had a hint of spices. We also got the atol de elote, which was a delicious corn beverage with sweet and savory notes.Note that the amount we ordered was not quite a full meal for two (which was intentional on our part since we wanted to try many restaurants in the Mission in one trip).

I decided to try this place with a coworker one day and was so happy I did, we keep going back. Guatemalan Restaurants are a little harder to find, even in a culturally rich area like San Francisco. The website shows colorful images of their menu items, which made it easy to determine what to try first. They have a variety of savory dishes, breakfast, soups and smaller plates. The items on the menu vary in price and have found that there are items under $10 that are great for lunch. On my first visit, I ordered the Chuchito, a small type of Guatemalan tamale filled with chicken and a tomato based sauce, wrapped in corn husks. The chunk of chicken was large and very juicy. I also ordered the Tacos Dorados, which are like Taquitos or Rolled Tacos, also very good and filling. My friend ordered the Pepian de Gallena, which is a traditional Guatemalan stew of Kaqchikel origin from the department of Chimaltenango. The flavors were so rich and savory, she took just the broth home that was left. On my second visit, I ordered the Tamal Colorado, which reminds me a lot of the Nicaraguan Tamales that we make in our family. The similarities are that they are wrapped in banana leaves and have a softer smooth masa. I also ordered the Dobladas, these are fried tortillas folded in half with beef with vegetables. It comes accompanied with cabbage and tomato sauce. This looks like a taco, but tasted like a savory empanada. Declious! Other items that we have ordered here are the Carne Asada Plate (a lot of food) and the Paches Tamale, similar to tamales colorado with the difference that Paches are made of potato and are spicy. Originally from the department of Quetzaltenango! The food here is delicious and unique, I love the flavors of the different dishes and also the Rosa de Jamaica. You need to try this spot.

This chicken soup was absolutely delicious, with the chicken perfectly seasoned to perfection. The service was warm and friendly, and the walls are adorned with incredible paintings that beautifully showcase Guatemalan culture.

3.5 STARSThis part of The Mission doesn't seem to get as much love (review-wise) as the hip Valencia corridor area but you'll find a lot of great mom and pop businesses on this stretch of 24th. And, with its proximity to General maybe you'll meet a doctor. ;) Antigua Guatemala Restaurant is a new family owned and operated Guatemalan resto that opened last month (took over Manivanh Thai). They're open for takeout, delivery, and indoor dining. No outdoor seating. Delivery via SpotOn. M E N UTraditional Guatemalan Fare: "Little cravings"/Apps, Entrees, Soup (one), and dessert. Kid's menu available.Just a heads up that since their opening, the menu has changed a bit and entrée prices have increased by about 30%. Here's the link to the current QR menu w/ stock photos:https://order.spoton.com/so-antigua-guatemala-restaurant-16669/san-francisco-ca/655d0ddf9c97320040b1d90aF O O D* Dobladas: Fried Tortillas filled w/ your choice of filling ($7.50) // 3.5 stars: https://tinyurl.com/ymdzhner--Choice of cheese or beef (I choose beef)Like a Guatemalan fried beef empanada, the maize shell was deliciously crispy with puffed edges. It was filled with 95% diced potatoes tho. Topped w/ red sauce, pickled cabbage, queso fresco, and a dollop of guacamole. Just an FYI, stock photo shows three pieces, yelp pic shows two, but you get one now. * Pepián de Gallina: Guatemalan Chicken Stew w/ pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, tomato spices, non-spicy chili peppers ($23.50) // 3 stars: https://tinyurl.com/yv6u6847--Includes two housemade corn tortillas + rice Pepián is my fav Guatemalan dish and unfortunately, this style isn't my jam. The stew is thinned out with broth so it's soupy with watered down flavors. I prefer that rich, gravy texture and deep nutty, earthy notes. Also, you don't get much meat. While tender, I received one wing attached to the backbone that was just skin and bones. It also included half a potato, chayote, and green beans. I loved the rice + chiltepe hot sauce (?) tho. Perfectly separated grains and flavorful with the hot sauce packing good acid and heat. S E R V I C EFriendly, welcoming service.Prompt food service; received order in less than 10 minutes (weekday around 3 pm). A M B I A N C EHomey, festive vibes with 8 tables. P A R K I N GMetered and residential parking. Not too difficult during the weekdays. Overall, the food was pretty tasty but light on the proteins. It's incredibly hard to open/run a new business in the city and the increasing food costs, makes it even more difficult. I hope the owners think about their price to portion ratio relative to other Guatemalan restos in the area to be competitive.

El servicio - fenomenal, tuvimos a nuestro perrito con nosotros y nos acomodaron sin complicaciones, eso es un servicio de calidad!!! La comida se asemeja mucho a la comida casera de Guatemala, tiene un sazón rico y nos deleitamos con unos platos típicos, como las tostadas, chuchitos y plátano en mole :) El lugar está muy cómodo - con el estilo maya pero moderno - encantados quedamos, y vamos a regresar seguidoService was phenomenal, we had our Australian Shepherd puppy with us and they accommodated us with no "buts", that's what makes a restaurant different from the rest, it's very hard to find Latin American cuisine restaurants that are dog friendly, so a 10/10 for that and our server was great, too!The food is very similar to homemade-rich food from Guatemala, when you travel yearly to the country you start to pick up on the rich seasoning and we enjoyed some typical dishes, such as tostadas, chuchitos and plátano en mole :)The place is very unique - typical Mayan style with marimba in the background but with a modern twist - loved it, and we will come back again :)

The food is so good! I had "La Merced" breakfast and I strongly recommend it. My mother had "Carne Adobada", and it looked amazing. She enjoyed it! I truly appreciate the service this place offers, it's family/kid friendly and you feel so welcomed just like if you were in Guatemala and other places in Latin America! Once you enter the restaurant, you feel in a totally different place, and the pieces of art decorating the walls give you another great reason to visit this place. Public parking is just within a 5 minute walk, but there's also plenty of street parking nearby. A big shoutout to the owners who work hard and have an impressive story behind the restaurant, it's a story of RESILIENCE! It's easy to go to restaurants, have food, write reviews, but if you genuinely connect with the people behind these places, you can actually learn much of the menu selection that includes family traditional dishes and other popular ones.Visit Antigua Guatemala Restaurant! I'm sure you'll have good memories at this place.

Menu has labels indicating which dishes can be made vegan (note that they are made so by excluding meat and cheese, not by substituting with vegan alternatives, in case that matters to anyone hoping for vegan sausage, etc) -- we found the beans, veggies and seasoning were sufficient to make things tasty and satisfying. The plantain with mole dessert was a highlight.
