5 STARSAn is a very intimate and authentic Japanese restaurant located inside of the Japantown Mall. There are only 8 seats at the bar and 3-4 other tables for 2 (max 4), so be sure to make a reservation weeks ahead! The Chef's omakase is the way to go here. It's an 8 course meal - it came with a few appetizer dishes ahead of the nigiri, including a few slices of sashimi, a chawanmushi, and miso marinated black cod, ahead of 7 amazing chef-choice cuts of nigiri. Check out the pictures to see how fresh each of these pieces of nigiri and sashimi are. It also came with a nice little strawberry and chocolate mochi dessert at the end.An is a hidden gem in SF where there are so many options. This one is very affordable and the chefs explained each dish perfectly. Would highly recommend An!

Came here to celebrate a birthday, and it was an amazing experience. We booked two weeks in advance, and it felt like dining in someone's home in Tokyo--super intimate. The omakase was fantastic: fresh, beautifully prepared, and we left perfectly satisfied. The chef added a personal touch, chatting with us about the dishes and restaurant, making it even more special. For the quality, it's one of the best reasonably priced omakase spots in SF. Highly recommend!

My review is more of a 4.5 but I rounded it up because of the food quality. my bf and i had a reservation on 12/17 since this place only takes reservations. it's a small restaurant and we chose to sit at the bar for a more personal experience. our experience with the food was amazing but we felt it was not as interactive with the chef. he had his regulars dining in the same time as us and i understand he would be more comfortable with them. however, i still wouldve liked a more personal experience like he could have talked to us more instead of giving us basic service such as explaining the food and saying enjoy. overall, not a bad experience but could be improved.

Loved almost all the dishes. Love the location in correlation to Japan Town. Staff and chefs were friendly and welcoming. The strawberry Mochi for dessert was so delicious.

We enjoyed our omakase experience at An, it reminded us of restaurants in Japan! We enjoyed all 8 courses of the omakase. It was well paced and well portioned. It was interesting to see the western twist to some of the courses. The miso black cod was delicious. Of the nigiris, the toro was our favorite it melted in our mouths. We liked how with each course they came to explain where the fish was sourced from, came with beautiful dishware, and you can tell it was all made with care. It was a nice intimate restaurant and they confirmed our reservations by text very quickly!

It's hard to put into words how much I loved our meal here this past Saturday. Though they are clear on their website that they do not take modifications which I completely understand for an omakase menu, they did ask if we had anything we didn't like when we sat down, which was very appreciated. Every single piece of fish was delicious, but some of my favorite bites were the yellowtail, scallop, uni, salmon, and deep sea fish I hadn't heard of. The pricing was super reasonable too, at $135 a person. We ordered the waygu as an add on and that was also delicious! This was the closest thing that reminded me of getting sushi in Japan, and you can tell this couple puts a lot of pride into making this a special experience for everybody there. They also provided excellent sake recommendations and I liked that you were able to do a carafe so that we could try a couple different kinds.

I would highly recommend. The food here is brilliant. The server tells you exactly how to eat the sushi. My favorites were the salmon and apples and the shrimp and ponzu jelly. The nigiri omakase is a 5 course meal for around $100 per person. They fly their fish from all over the world and you can surely taste the difference between this and other sushi places. Although you don't get "full" with this experience. Additionally the whole experience is about an hour long. We sat down at 7:30 and received our check at 8:30. So be on time. The space is very intimate, only 3 tables and a bar. So they do reservation only. It's not the best place for a big group. This is a great place for a business meal or a nice date. I would come back for sure.

Great omakase restaurant at half the price of most sf spots. The restaurant is small and only seats around 20 people, giving the place a cozy vibe. All of the food was delicious and varied in the flavors and senses. I'm not a huge fan of most nigiri but this was exquisite. The fatty flavor and textures were unlike any other sushi shops I've ever been to. Even a basic bowl of miso soup gave me a deeper, heartier taste. Wonderful shop and will be coming back

All amazing. Small cozy place and feels like you have time tripped back to Japan. Such a fresh and traditional sushi serving. They have Omakase set menu which is also a great value. And when you would like to have exactly what you want and have double of fresh fish for the season, you can do that as well. Lately, I see so many fancy Omakase Sushi places in Bay area, but all added flavors on rice and/or fish, and ignoring the basics.
