It's taken me too long to finally try this SF staple.Came out here for a girls night and it was top notch from start to finish. The cocktails were exceptional and surprisingly their bar bites were the main highlight for our group - I especially liked the chips and anchovies option. Our mains were traditional French inspired and I had the duck with mashed potatoes (subbed from the usual lentils side it usually comes with). Service was great as well and the atmosphere was romantic vintage vibes. Highly recommend Absinthe bar for a date night or pre-theater meal. It's awesome!

Outstanding service, nice classic ambience. Food-wise, somewhat disappointing except for the delicious dessert. Went with my wife for a Valentine lunch and ordered the French onion soup and the petit croque monsieur. Both about as basic as pumpkin spice but disappointing in different ways. The onion soup was sweet, overloaded with cheese and was missing the umami-ness that one associates with the dish. I even asked if the soup was vegetarian (no). The croque monsieur was decent but more grilled cheese and ham, due I think to the lack of a good bechamel. The guava eclair was absolutely delicious.

The food was excellent. Had the combination duck with lentils. First time having this combo and it was delicious. The 2nd plate was beef dish and the beef was very flavorful. We had few small dishes, cheese plates was good. The only one that was disappointing to me was the sushi plate. There was no flavor. The service was excellent- 5 stars. They were attentive but not overly. They filled up our wine classes and the food came in at the right paste. Very polite waiters. The restaurant is cozy. Is a great date night ... hint hint. Very much enjoyed my evening. Will definitely come back. Note there is no fixed menu. So if you hesitate because of budget , I will just order the entree and a good bottle of wine, side bread. The entree is well worth it. Ohh yes Dessert.. so yummy !

Absinthe is a great place to go before you head to the opera, ballet, or symphony. The staff is nice, friendly, and courteous. The decor gives a french bistro vibe. The food is fresh and delicious, as well as their cocktails. Must try the oysters Rockefeller.

Great spot for drinks and bites in the Hayes Valley area, especially if you are a fan of absinthe. The atmosphere is candle-lit and cozy and we got a spot right at the front window by the bar. We tried some different absinthes and beers and had the BASQUE "FISH & CHIPS" ($10 - Marinated White Anchovies, House-Made Chips, Garlic Aioli, Pimenton de la Vera), which were literally just anchovies on chips. The BIRDS OF A FEATHER ($10 - Duck Confit, Chicken Liver Mousse, Pickled Hen of the Woods Mushrooms, Crostini) was an interesting but tasty salad. Overall, great vibe, food and drinks!

I recently dined at Absinthe in Hayes Valley, and I must say, it was a delightful experience from start to finish! The atmosphere is charming and cozy, making it the perfect spot for a special occasion or a casual night out. What truly stood out was the attentive service. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations. They checked in on us just the right amount, ensuring we had everything we needed without being intrusive. The food was exceptional! I highly recommend trying their signature dishes the duck breast, steak and the burger , which are beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The French onion soup was so yummy but I could have shared it Overall, Absinthe is a gem in San Francisco. With its fantastic service and delicious cuisine.

Growing up in Calgary I feel like I really took it for granted how often I saw French onion soup on menus. Living in the US, I realized it's a special item that you can only really find it at French restaurants (and the frozen food aisle of Trader Joes lmao). Needless to say, I was eyeing the FOS as soon as we picked this spot for brunch. Overall chic French bistro vibes. Sorta upscale feeling but still fairly lively. The French onion soup was true to the original. It was perfectly cheesy and I was struggling to cut the cheese pull with every spoonful. Underneath was a rich broth with lots of onions. It was the perfect consistency and flavour (not too salty, and not too watery). The salade lyonnaise was quite light, with a strong aroma of olive oil. The ratio of mushroom + shredded duck + pancetta toppings to the salad was pretty good. Each bite was exciting with the combination of all the toppings coming together.

Have always wanted to come here and so glad I got to. Super cute space, we got to sit in the front window in the bar area but there is more formal dining towards the back and in another room. Had the French onion soup and it was very good but very expensive at $18. The biggest issue was slow service. They were not super busy, our server just seemed to forget about us. I would give them another try for a more formal dinner service in their dining room. I would like to try more menu items.

Great spot for pre-show dinner and drinks. The Szeracs were great as was the food. They accept reservations, which is helpful, and got us to the show on time. I'm sure we will be back.

Came back again and still love it! Got some absinthe which was well priced I'd say. Oysters were $5 a pop which makes me wanna gag but I will say they were fresh and delicious.
