Tellez Tamales & Barbacoa

My family has been getting our Christmas Eve tamales here since I was a little girl. This year I was on the other side as a customer. The masa is great and there is always the perfect amount of meat in everyone. They melt in your mouth! They often sell out and be ready to grab more than a few dozen.The lines are long but move quickly a lot of people get the foods they have made for lunch.

The BEST place to pick up your tamales. We tried the Delia tamales in San Antonio they didn't have enough spice for our taste.

My husband suggested this place and at first I was a bit skeptical but after eating my first pork tamale I was sold! I was actually upset he only got one dozen of tamales after the fact haha! Don't just get one dozen get four and thank you me later! We also got the barbacoa from here which was 15$ for a LB. The barbacoa was okay I wouldn't say it was great but the tamales are and I normally do not eat pork but I would definitely eat more pork in these tamales. Go get some I promise it's worth it!

Hummmm, walked in on an early Sunday morning hoping to get my Barbacoa and big red fix and saw the sign that read voted SA Best for Barbacoa, tamales and menudo for 2020. Not sure how many ppl voted but I was most def not involved because I DO NOT AGREE. This was my first time inside, even though I have eaten from here once before. Parking lot is nice and BIG, ample room to park and not feel like your in a small congested parking not. Tellez is the entire building and parking lot. When you walk in the inside is spacious and clean. You stand in a cafeteria style line to order. Ordered the following:Barbacoa, tamales and menudo, avocado, pico, red/green salsa, pico and of course BIG RED! Don't know the price since my husband paid and I was not paying attention but whatever it cost, it was not worth it. Ordered for my family and a friends family and we were going to compare our thoughts because our usual spot, across the street, was closed. I was told menudo was good; but I did not eat it. We all agreed the all meet Barbacoa and tamales were not good at all. The Barbacoa place across from tellez does not get as much traffic as Tellaz does, but if you try it you would not go back to Tellez. The Barbacoa was tasteless and although there was plenty of grease in the container it was stringy and tasted dry. There was 0 flavor and needed lots of salt, avocado, salsa and pico and still, no bueno. The corn tortillas were literally the worst tortilla I have ever had. Store bought would have been better and we all agreed the tortilla took away from the Barbacoa. The tortilla did not have any taste, but more importantly, the edges of the tortilla were hard and thick. Tamales tasted funny, we ordered pork but my family all agreed they did not taste like pork-so they jury is still out on the tamales. Salsas we're ok, but again, I suggest trying the place across the street from Tellez. I am in no way associated with the place across the street from Tellez but I have been eating from there for at least 18 years. It's small, and looks like a hole in the wall, but they treat you like family and it is VERY WORTH IT. I did get my big read fix, so that was good. But everything else-hard pass. Tellez is big and the staff moves quickly to get you in and out but again, I prefer the place across the street.

All meat Barbacoa tacos on corn tortillas with avocado and green salsa on one, pico de gallo on another. Pork tamales, chicharrones? And of course an ice cold Big Red. Tellez is my go to for my weekend Barbacoa fix. Their Tamales are amazing!

Tellez has been our #1 spot for tamales for a couple of years now. I believe there are two locations, but this is the only one I've been to. My hubby surprised me with breakfast tacos and menudo one morning, and I was in a heavenly bliss. They also have two different types of barbacoa, with one I wasn't thrilled about, but the other I loved. I'm sure it's a matter of preference; but I can't remember which is which. Back to the tamales...I have to warn you, in December, Tellez can get PACKED and can run out of Tamales quickly! You should check their Facebook for updates...The lines get crazy long and wrap around the large parking lot. It's unbelievable! One year ppl were starting a line the night before opening and it was freezing outside. So we get our Christmas tamales in late November, just to be sure we have some for the holiday. =)

Been going for years, today was terrible. The barbacoa had 0 flavor, just straight meat taste. No seasoning no nothing. I also got chicken tamales and the amount of chicken was good but dang were there some large chunks in there. Overall a not so good experience. The flavor was a no go for me, we ended up going through a drive through. Super bland

The menudo was awesome. The barbacoa had NO flavor whatsoever. Even salt and pepper might help.

What a hidden gem, this was my first time and food was outstanding. The establishment is large and so clean perfect for large families. The menudo and breakfast tacos were delicious. I love the cafeteria type of service.
