Tried this place on a the recommendation of a friend. The pork tamales were outstanding!!! They are huge and packed with flavor. The barbacoa was ok but it wasn't something I'd order again. The employees were very nice! We had a big order because we wanted to try a little of everything and they got it all correct. If I'm craving tamales I would for sure come back.

This location is a hit one day and a miss another day. I bought 2 dozen tamales. 1 chicken and 1 pork. the chicken tamales tasted like it was days old like it was about to expire. the problem is they prepare the tamales too far ahead of time. its understandable that they are just trying to keep up with demand by being able to keep up the supply but because of that they are sacrificing quality for quantity. Not to mention the number 2 special for $19.99 is overpriced for the most part. it comes with corn tortillas, barbacoa, tamales, and salsa. after taxes it comes out to $21 and change. keep in mind they dont use safety food gloves or hair nets here either. each time you come here you are coming at your own risk because if you havent come early or its not busy than you have a better chance of getting old food about to expire. if I'm going to pay $21 and change it should also come with avocados (or guacamole), onions, tomatoes, cilantro, baked goods, and a 2 liter soda. this place does serve great food but there is a time and a place for everything and by the time you come around they are probably going to give you something that is expired, about to expire, or could be contaminated with something. I really dont know how this place received such a high score inspection because the health inspector completely overlooked or just didnt care about the process of the food and how it is handled. the biggest mistake you can make is coming here too often especially when you are not early and it is not busy because that is asking for bad food. I found what appears to be a hair in one of the dozen of chicken tamales. they really should make these tamales on a limited basis because there is too much risk in preparing them in advance. they keep cutting corners every which way possible just to be prepared at all times and trying to keep up with demand that it is ruining everything else that makes the business great in the first place. the pork tamales tasted way too over-saturated in its own juices and way too salty for its own good which really took away the fresh quality of the tamales. the barbacoa itself was magnificent. I made four tacos with them and added the beans to it with the green avocado salsa that was added. they sometimes add either too much of something or not enough of something and on a good day they everything is just right. they know how to make great food but over-preparing and thinking too far ahead is always a bad idea for any business because the customer will always be the one who gets screwed out of a great meal in the end. this place is great just dont expect it to be that way every single time you come here because you will only be disappointed and waste your money here.

Decent prices for good food. Tamales were cooked very well, had a bit of spice aftertaste but defiant a good flavor. Barbacoa was really good, I'd go back for sure. Enjoyed the corn tortillas.

Maybe I am biased because I am from the neighborhood but Magy's Tamales and Barbacoa are a staple in my home! I have been a super fan of Magy's for more than 8 years. The family is friendly. The service consistent. We always get the Magy's Especial #1. Not only is it affordable but always satisfying. They finally added the tip option, so if you are swiping be sure to tell them you'd like to leave a tip because they won't ask for tips. I can't wait for Sunday! Thank you Magy for providing great food for my family.

Unexpectedly found this gem! We are very picky about our "TexMex" food being raised by parents from Mexico. Everything was delicious and you could feel the love from those who prepared the food. We got the Enchilada plate, Barbacoa taco, and the Rajas taco. I can't say enough about everything, so much so, that you just have to try it for your self, even the Barbacoa taco which we have found in Texas can often be a bit greasy or "fatty" was not the case. And the Rajas taco...there has been no comparison that we have found in Texas, let alone San Antonio. Thank you Magy, for bringing home to San Antonio for us.
