05 Feb 2025We were next door at Pet Supplies Plus stocking up. Then I wanted to take a few tacos to go. Have not ever been to a Las Palapas. Ordered two bacon and egg and one bean and cheese. The total was less than $8.00. The bacon and egg are of the single strip of bacon type, rather than the bacon chopped up in the egg, which I prefer. However, they were stuffed. I had to wait about twenty minutes for my order and thought that was a bit long for such a small order. Several delivery services came by to pick up orders while I was waiting. Also, they have some sort of loyalty program that gets you cheaper deals every day. They are on a board just inside the entrance. So, I think I learned that walk-in orders to go are just gonna be waiting.

Taco Cabana is so popular as the chain fast food Mexican spot in San Antonio, that it's easy to overlook Las Palapas. I forgot about Las Palapas until I returned to the area for an extended period. My mind is always on Taco Cabana in SA, or Taco Bueno in Dallas, when I'm outside the state. One of my go-to items at Las Palapas is the carne guisada taco. This is mainly because Taco Cabana stops serving carne guisada when their breakfast hours end and Las Palapas serves it all day. I, also, enjoy their general crispy tacos, picadillo taco, chicken & tortilla soups, enchiladas, sopapillas, and horchata. If I had to critique, it would be my disappointment at the removal of the 4-piece option for sopapillas, the reduction in the honey they drizzle on the sopapillas when you opt for that, the greasiness of the crispy tacos, and the imbalance of cinnamon ratio in the horchata sometimes. None of these points are enough for me to stop going. Finally, I usually show up between 2p-6p. The drive-through staff are always good but there was a young man, with pretty eyes, that used to work the window and he was always very pleasant and efficient. The woman that works the window now isn't bad but she doesn't have the same air about her that the young man has.

Don't be fooled by the drive-through window. This place is not fast food. You'll pay a tip for table service, but you'll be happy to do it. Go inside, sit down, and wait for the efficient servers to come to your table. He or she will bring you REAL silverware, cloth napkins, and a bottomless helping of chips and salsa. The dinner plates are around $11, but weekly specials make it much cheaper. We once got enchilada plates on a Wednesday for $2.99! Follow them on Facebook to see the Wednesday specials. My favorite dish is the enchiladas crema: shredded chicken cooked with tomatillos and smothered in a white, creamy sauce. In addition to the food (which comes out of the kitchen lickity-split), they have a full bar and about eleventy-seven kinds of margaritas. They even have live music on certain nights! This is our go-to place for weeknights when we don't feel like cooking and we've never been disappointed.

Service was very slow. I never had chorizo and egg tacos that looked like this before.

Apparently they close at 3:45 on Sundays. They had some bouncer at the door turning people away even though the sign says they close at 4. Just say you close at 3:45 on Sundays instead of 4. Ridiculous

I'm giving three stars but it's for the food only. The food was delicious. Deducted a star for the horrible customer service. Our server, Anai, never came by to refill our drinks. She spent the entire time hanging out at the register talking with all the servers. She forgot our to go container we asked for. And rolled her eyes at the tip we gave her which was based on her performance. She's lucky she even got a tip because of the horrible customer service

This place has a B rating {87%} no wonder my table still had caked on beans {from the previous customer} when I sat down to eat Just be careful . The waiters may be nice and the ambiance might be quiet ... doesn't mean they aren't gross with cleanliness

I genuinely like their food for the dollar. BUT, two recent takeout experiences have demonstrated that their procedures and/or oversight need to be kicked up a couple of notches. The first, a couple of weeks ago, I ordered a margharita with our takeout. Unfortunately, while she knew about the drink (since it was for her), my wife didn't notice its absence when she picked up the order. Apparently, their order system prints the order which they tape to the bag but it doesn't include bar orders. I emailed them and, after about 3 days I received a call and was told the amount would be credited to my card - it wasn't.On the last visit, I place an order at 5:30 for 6:30 pickup. Knowing that they often get the orders out early, I arrived about 10 minutes early. Bag on the counter behind reception, but they said it wasn't mine. I was then told they couldn't find my order. Started to re-enter the order. Showed them the charge on my credit card online. They then looked at the bag again and it was my order! At this point, the food had been there for at least the 15 minutes I had. Needless to say, it wasn't very warm when I got home.

Drinks were great, Erika had better service! I had the breakfast tacos and a house margarita and both were phenomenal. Salsa verde was great as well.

I wish I could base this review on the quality of the food, however...I came to eat here with a group of work colleagues after an event. When I inquired (because I have a deathly allergy to latex) whether the kitchen used gloves made of latex or some other material like vinyl, plastic, or nitrile to handle their food, I learned that their kitchen does indeed use latex gloves to handle all of their food. As a result, if I ate there, the entire kitchen, all the food and all the utensils are contaminated with latex particles, which when ingested would send me into an anaphylactic reaction. Hello epi-pen and trip to the ER before my throat closes. It's not worth it.I was very disappointed to not be able to enjoy the company of my colleagues at lunch. Guess I will have to take my dining dollars elsewhere. There are other alternatives for food service gloves that do not cause allergic reactions to patrons. It's a shame restaurants are not more aware of life-threatening allergy issues such as this, so they can accommodate all of their guests.
