Was in the area searching around for some food. Happened to spot La Tia Bertha on the map. Checked out their menu from across the interwebs, and decided, why not? They have aqua frescas, and it's a hot summer day, so what's not to like?Drove on a road to get here. Seemed like a reasonably busy road. If you're on the opposite side of the road, you might have to make a U-turn. Then, you can turn onto the property. There's a few spaces around the place. The restaurant is basically in a home. Come in, there's several tables. Pleasant decor. Tiny bathrooms. Sit down. If they hand you a menu, it'll be an abridged version. Their complete menu is posted on the wall. Don't forget to look at the wall.Asked about aqua frescas, because I hadn't noticed the menu on the wall. The gentleman rambled off the flavors; decided on pineapple and watermelon with no sugar. Yes, they make them fresh, from scratch, with customized sweetness. That includes their horchata.Hunger attacked. Hot day! Already have aqua frescas, let's get more hydrated with Caldo de Res and Menudo. Add on a Tampiquena for good measure. But that was only after I noticed the menu on the wall.Hot liquids arrived. The Caldo de Res was glorious. The Menudo was magnificent. Happy tastebuds, full-up tummy. The Tampiquena had a great sauce on it with red tortillas at the bottom. The meat portion on it was a bit small, but given the price and the seasoning, everything was wonderful. If passing by again, this'll definitely be a place to stop and slowly wolf down some savory food.

Little neighborhood place on Bandera rd in Leon Valley. Parking in the back and sides. Quaint place that used to be someone's home, cozy and comfortable. The food also tastes like you're eating at your Tia's casa. Beans were perfectly seasoned, and tortillas were light and airy but handmade. The bacon and eggs were tasty, and consistency of bacon was crisp and meaty. Carne guisada with cheese was nice, bite-sized pieces. My plate was served with a little salad, rice, which was just like my sister makes it, refried beans and tortillas. They also have Cafe de Olla and Champurrado! The service is welcoming and attentive, and food came out very quickly. The bunuelos are sold to go, and they are a party in itself with sugary, cinnamon flavors dancing in your mouth, and they are taking orders for homemade tamales! They also make birria and pozole Rojo, It was on the menu. It's definitely worth a trip back.

I have only been to La Tia Bertha once when I visited San Antonio two weeks ago. But I think I talked about their food at least 5 times with my husband after that visit, and every time I make soup, I think about their Caldo de res! Caldo de res is a "simple" dish. Its ingredients are zucchini, carrots, cabbage, corn, maybe some potatoes, and pork shank. The thing about their soup is each part of the soup is just right. The soup itself is full of the rich flavor from the meat; the veggies are soft and have soaked up the wonderful soup flavor; and the meat is tender, flavorful but not overly salty. It's that kind soup which comforts you. I also tried their menudo soup and tempiquena. Both are pretty good. And it should be ideal to get their agua Fresca and Horchata during summer time.

Food: 5Service: 5Ambiance: 5This place is so cozy and the food so authentic that it's more than a restaurant...it's a portal to a time gone by when mom, tia, or tio served up some homemade Mexican food with the secret ingredient (love). You'll reminisce of days full of laughs with loved ones. The restaurant owner is as humble as the location. He takes great care to ensure you have a positive experience here. He knows the secret to making you feel like you're at your Tia's dining room table about to enjoy her cooking.TIP: Order the Cafe de Olla!! This is where the feeling of a warm hug begins. It's truly special.Green Chilaquiles: A little spicy, but perfect. The chips were perfectly crunchy and smothered in delicious green sauce. The potatoes were perfectly fried, crunchy and soft.Pancake: The batter used for the pancake was delicious. The pancake arrived warm, fresh, and fluffy.I didn't meet Tia Bertha , but she already feels like family.

We come back every couple of weeks or months, and never disappointed. Love the coffee, love the breakfast, and today I tried their caldo de res, flavorful and went well with the tortilla. The owner always make great recommendations!

We came here strictly for the cafe de olla and wow did it not let me down!! This kind of brewed coffee is a little hard to come by so when I searched on Yelp for it, this was the top recommended in the area. The gentleman that served us is the owner and he was so nice and personable. He told us about him starting out and why he wanted to bring authentic Mexican food to the area, not Tex-Mex. The place from outside looks like a home and inside it's just as welcoming! The good came out quickly and tasted so fresh! We really loved the tacos. We look forward to coming back.

I've passed this location hundreds of times driving through Bandera Rd and have never noticed it. Stopped in for lunch after seeing a TikTok post about the restaurant. No customers when we arrived during lunch hour. Would not recommend this place. The food was bland not very appealing.

Our to go to Mexican Restaurant in San Antonio! This is our first Mexican Restaurant in the city and we are really satisfied.Food: The food was really good, I have been trying Mexican food overseas but failed to get the punch of the real taste. This restaurant is my first Mexican food in San Antonio, Texas and I am superb satisfied. We enjoyed the generous amount of food and we were glad that we had a good food!Service: It was probably the owner of the restaurant and he's been nice and accommodating.Place: It's spacious inside and you have an option to eat outside.Parking: There's a big parking space beside and behind of the restaurant.

i needed tamales in a pinch and liked the ratings this location received on yelp...it did not disappoint! Tamales at the party were a hit and at least 5 people asked me for where I got them. This is now the only place I get tamales, I do also plan on eating here next time i swing through. Call day(s) before so they can prepare them for you. They are great!
