This place is great! The barbacoa is the best I've ever had and the flour tortillas are perfect. A must have if you're in the area and looking for barbacoa! Place has been around for a long while and you'll see why after trying their food. The owners and staff are also super friendly people.

The pork tamales are a definite must have. The menudo is also great. I definitely recommend coming here to get some great tamales, menudo, and barbacoa. They are only open Thursday thru Sunday and sometimes sell out early so call ahead to see if they still have what you want. The also have chicarrones, corn and flour tortillas and ready to spread masa or dough for the home-made tamales if you want to do them yourself. The co-owner Richard is very friendly and eager to make your orders go smoothly. Tell him"BaltaZar" sent youThe store front is very clean inside and out. I was very impressed about this.

UYE First Friday Lunch Bunch 7/7/17 - Tex Mex Food Crawl stop #1We literally found this place on Yelp... just like the sticker on the front glass door said! Our original stop was closed 'on vacation' so quickly did a search in the area for "tamales". I looked at the address and they were literally across the street from our 2nd stop at Ray's Drive Inn which didn't open till 11... so off we went to explore something new!I feel that La Monita Tortilleria Factory is/was an undiscovered gem in the mine... well no more... let's get the word out to check them out! As of now, they have only five reviews but they are a 2016 favorite on Yelp... I saw the Yelp sign proudly displayed on the wall plus two stickers on the glass doors as we were walking in so we knew they were very Yelp friendly! A visiting Yelp Elite from out of town plus her niece who lives locally and I spent over an hour talking to the owners on this morning while we sampled the barbocoa, tamales, sauces, chicharrón while drinking the obligatory Big Red soda.My favorite part of the morning was getting to know the owners and learning about how they run their business. They are very hands on with everything made daily and nothing reheated. Whatever is left over at the end of the day is given back to the local community. This is a family business for over 40 years now being run by the second generation for the past three years with the third generation being groomed for future take over. Let Richard & Nadine Garza know that I sent ya! Grinding the corn in house starts the masa for the tamales. (yes, they sell just the masa if you want to make your own tamales at home!) The fat from the freshly made chicharrón is used instead of 'lard' in a can. Their in house 'tamale lady' hand spreads the masa on the corn husk daily while many other tamale places in town are now using machines for the spread. Pork tamale is the only choice they sale this time of year. They do offer other flavors during the holidays OR by special request with a minimum order. I love the love that they put into their tamales as well as all the other offerings on the menu. I am sad to say they did not blew me away on taste. For me personally, I felt the masa was tougher / stiffer than I would like. The ratio was good. the spread was good. I also prefer spicy pork flavor which wasn't an option... and that's totally ok. I didn't fall head over heels in love... at least not today... Did you see my pic of the fresh chicharrónes? Oh my goodness they are huge! ... Yes, I brought one home! WoW! I'm not a fan of barbocoa so I can't judge if it's the best... my apologies. I did taste both of their styles tho... and my fav out of the all meat or mixed fatty... winner was all meat IMHO.Oh I remember Nadine telling me they do some kind of special hot chocolate during the holidays that sounded so amazing. I think it was something different than the typical Mexican hot chocolate but maybe it was the same. So much information was going into our brains that it was hard to keep up and remember it all. I will be back in Dec.... In May 2016, La Monita was given the Blue Plate Award by News 4 San Antonio... and that Blue Plate is proudly hung on their wall for all to see. They get 100s on their inspections. They place is simple, clean, tidy, and organized... all of which are 5 star worthy.Pure San Antonio made with pure love. Thank you Richard & Nadine! The word is out!

First time here, I was in a huge bind as I needed some tamales for a Christmas gathering. Most of my preferred places are closed on Monday. I happened to find this one by doing a search on Yelp. I saw they closed at 4pm and made sure to go straight there from work. The tamales were nice and warm. I put them an ice chest when I got home and took them to the dinner. We ate them at 7pm and wow they were great! Good seasoning, not too greasy, not dry at all and the meat to masa ratio was great!Currently they have pork tamales for $10.50 a dozen.

A MUST go to spot if you're in the area or even if you're not. I've heard of this place from family and decided to try it out for the first time and it was AWESOME. The place is clean and all the staff were fantastic. Some of the best food I've had on my way through San Antonio. Will absolutely be back!

This is my favorite place in San Antonio for barbacoa and menudo! I would suggest the all meat barbacoa with corn tortillas and some pico de gallo plus a pint of menudo.
