Great food. Super friendly staff. The chicken burrito was great. Taco were wonderful. This restaurant is a classic example of knowing what it is and nailing it. Great balance of flavor. Really high quality ingredients. It's just damn good food. Yum

Great little establishment with a good amount of offerings at a fair price! My husband ordered steak and eggs, I had the tampiquena plate which consisted of fajitas, a ground beef hard taco and a cheese enchilada! The taco and enchilada was delicious. The fajitas on the other hand lacked a little flavor but was good mixed with beans and rice. My son had a cheeseburger and fries. We also had horchata and limonada- so good! The waitress was nice and service was fast. The place itself is classic little joint with plenty of seating and Mexican decor. Note they do not serve fountain drinks but do have canned sodas, coffees and BEER! Chips were freshly made and salsa was just a hint of spice and good. This is a skip away from the Riverwalk.

This is definitely a locals joint, right off Main Plaza, and a hit for breakfast. It's also a short walk from most Riverwalk hotels & right across from the San Fernando Cathedral. We decided on an early walk for a different breakfast.Staff was efficient & charming. Yes, they have some posted rules, and based on the neighborhood, that is an expected course of business. I will note that based on observations, a nice cross section of local clientele come in, including business folks and cops. They managed to hit high notes on everything, but to be able to get thin pork chops cooked perfect & moist is a true credit, the tortillas were great, and the hot sauces super fresh. The salsa verde packed a hidden punch.Anyway, it would be a great place to grab a few breakfast tacos to go, walk to that little plaza between San Fernando and the river, and dine al fresco.

I knew as soon as I walked in that this place would be amazing. It smelled a bit like a bathroom and seemed to have barely working air conditioning. I also noticed that they had those big plastic cups like restaurants did when I was growing up. All of these things made for a true "hole in the wall" experience. The food did not disappoint. I had the 4 Mini Tacos meal along with a side of rice and some chips and salsa. These were the best tacos I had while visiting San Antonio! The server was fast and the price was a great value. Even though I am able to overlook the smell and temperature of this place, I am giving it 4 stars since I think most people may find those aspects to be a bit of a nuisance.

31 Aug 2023This place has been here a while. It's right across the street from the courthouse. I stopped in today because we were excused from jury duty pretty early and I was hungry. Seat yourself and someone then comes over to give you a menu and take your order. I had huevos rancheros and coffee. Later, I placed an order for picadillo tacos on corn to go. My plate was as expected. The sauce could have been a little more robust. I've had softer four tortillas, but these weren't too bad. I was disappointed that I didn't get a coffee refill. Oh well. My husband said the tacos were good. Employees are friendly. Alas, there is a 3% up-charge when using a credit card. They are open until 8pm.

I've now been to La Mexicana several times. I work in the Bexar County Courthouse complex, and it's literally right next door. Convenience is the key to my multiple trips. Convenient is the main word that comes to mind. I've never had a terrible meal here, but I've never had an "Oh my God, I have to tell my wife about this place" meal, either. It's just your basic, average Mexican joint. It's also very moderately priced considering their location. Now, I can say one of the biggest bonuses of this joint is BREAKFAST. ALL. DAY. I'm a sucker for some good breakfast tacos. Although, one time, I was unsure whether the bacon in my tacos was fully cooked. Might wanna watch out for that. Service is never an issue. You can easily be in and out in 30-45 minutes and stay within your allotted lunch hour budget. Overall: quick and friendly service, convenient if you're near the courthouse, but it's not "knock your socks off" quality food. Oh, and (at least the men's) bathroom is small and awkward for the size of the restaurant.

Being from Southern California, it's difficult to find good Mexican food that isn't TexMex locally. Get off the Riverwalk and head a few blocks to this place. By far my go-to when I am in San Antonio. It's across from the courthouse and is packed with locals (for good reason). The service is great, and impressive for basically a taco shop. The ambiance is no frills and typical hole in the wall taco shop restaurant, which honestly I appreciate more than frills. An important part of Mexican food is the way they prepare salsas, beans, and rice. Although I am a fan of a bit more spice in the salsa, this place checks off all 3 boxes! If you want real authentic Mexican food at decent prices, walk 2 blocks off the tourist trap to this place.

An unfortunate decline in quality after the recent Kitchen Cops episode leaves me to believe the love is no longer here.Between the price of meals (two bean and cheese chalupas with a tea rang in at almost $10) and this disappointing Flauta plate (almost $20), I truly believe La Mexicana isn't doing much to improve. Today, the flautas were cold and really, really chewy and not crunchy but strangely enough, the rice and refried beans were piping hot. When you consider the near $20 price + tip, it's sad to say the least. I'm sorry, y'all, but I don't think I can come back anymore.
