Good Time Charlie's Bar & Cafe

The onion rings at this place rock!! They bring out a huge plate! There were 3 people in our party and we had a hard time finishing them all! By the time we got our entrees, we could barely finish them. THis place has been around since I was a youngster (I'm nearing retirement - for perspective), in the same location, in the same "old house" building with wooden floors and old-timey memorabilia decorating hanging from the walls and ceiling. Someday when I'm back in San Antonio and feeling famished, I'd love to return and try more of their menu offerings. What a great place to hang out and enjoy their music, although it tends to be loud and seating is cramped but it's definitely worth visiting!!

Friendly casual cafe. Fully stocked bar. Plan ahead to order an appetizer - I personally recommend the platter of onion rings ( too much for a person to eat). We stopped for a late lunch and each got a speciality cheeseburger. Hearty portion of beef. Super fresh tomatoes and lettuce. The wait staff is experienced, attentive, and friendly. I understand the chocolate cake is fabulous-- but was too onion ring stuffed to check it out! Many locals and "regulars" eat here - always a good sign to me.

Good home cooking food. Ordered a la carte hamburger steak. Margarita was not weak. Lots of fried food.

Good Time Charlie has been a cherished spot in our community since 1979, and it holds a special place in my heart from my younger days. Recently, I decided to revisit this old favorite and was reminded why it's stood the test of time.I ordered the jalapeño queso burger, which was good and packed with flavor. However, it didn't quite measure up to their self-proclaimed "best chicken fried steak in the state" - a title that, in my opinion, is well-deserved. The chicken fried steak was exceptional, tender, and perfectly seasoned. The onion rings were another highlight, being big, crispy, and incredibly satisfying.The ambiance at Good Time Charlie is wonderfully nostalgic, with an old-school vintage look that adds a unique charm to the dining experience. The decor takes you back in time, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. What truly sets this place apart, though, is the staff. They are consistently friendly, attentive, and make you feel right at home. Their genuine hospitality adds to the overall positive experience.If you're on the hunt for some hearty southern home cooking, Good Time Charlie is a must-visit. It's a great spot to enjoy classic dishes that have been perfected over decades. Despite some menu items not quite reaching the legendary status of others, it's still a solid choice for a comforting and satisfying meal.

Found this place to be just a bit meh. They advertise the best Chicken Fried Steaks but it wasn't anything special. The atmosphere was pretty decent with a bit of vintage appeal. The best part was our Server. She was quick, super friendly and attentive.

Based on the recommendation of a friend, I ordered lunch to go but, next time I'll stay and eat-in for the full experience. The staff are very happy to serve you. I was greeted by one of the Owners who has the sweetest, warmest personality.One of their most popular dishes is the Chicken Fried Steak, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans which is enough for two. I had the Smoked Turkey with Swiss & Fries. The sandwich was delicious but, maybe next time I'll ask if they can double cook the Fries. There's also an assortment of drinks including beer and wine. And don't forget dessert. Atmosphere is casual, there is an ADA entrance & seating is limited to inside only. Give Good Time Charlie's a try, they're right in Broadway just north of the Pearl. My girlfriend had heard good things and wanted to try the chicken fried steak so I went along. I think this is the type of restaurant you have to be raised up on to appreciate, like Bill Millers. I got the fried catfish. The pictures from other diners looked great but I was sorely disappointed. The catfish was watery like frozen fish tends to be. The crust had absolutely no seasoning. The fries were kind of limp and lukewarm. The onion rings were decent. I must say the service was great. My friend was pretty disappointed but hey, we tried it!

3? Only 3? Yes, but with a strong caveat....My wife were looking forward to sharing the award-winning chicken fried steak while on our Texas trip. The beef was, admittedly, some of the best cooked and quality meat served to me this way. The corn, while canned, was hot, buttery, and a huge portion. The mash was good, but....HOW CAN YOU GIVE US LUKEWARM GRAVY ON YOUR AWARD WINNING DISH??? The gravy should be just as hot as the meat and veg. The fried zucchini was actually quite nice.Our servers were.....real. Like, keeping it real, Texas style. Drinks were refilled, and we genuinely felt taken care of.Would recommend, but for the love of Davy Crockett, heat up your gravy!!!!

Service was great but the food was barely average. The chickem fried steak had a good crust but was under seasoned. The green beans also lacked seasoning but the heavy was good. The best part of the meal was sharing a a couple of beers with my son and nephew. Most likely we will not return given the long wait.

We have had a great time here. Their food is amazing and cheap. The service was good too!
