We were super impressed with Dean's. Despite the construction, the ambiance was elegant without being stuffy. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable with just the right amount of service. We started with a perfectly chilled shrimp cocktail, followed by the perfectly seasoned ribeye, creamy mashed potatoes, and grilled broccoli. (There was a creamy lemon sauce for the broccoli that was fantastic!) Every bite was delicious! The table rolls were a bonus touch. Dean's Steakhouse delivers a classic steakhouse experience with top-notch food and service. It's a beautiful restaurant. I really liked this place. We can't wait to return!

2nd visit to Deans. Bottom line: Loved the service but the management team dropped the ball. I really want to give them 3 stars because of all the attitude from management but their service team gave 5 star service so I'll land at 4. I loved Deans so much the first time that I chose them for my bday dinner. The atmosphere is beautiful and perfect for a special occasion. However, On the way to our 5 pm reservation we got stuck behind an accident. So I called ahead to see if we could shift to 5:30. When I made the reservation a few days before they had plenty of availability before 6:30 so I figured it would be fine as our eta was 5:20. Well, they made such a fuss about it I nearly cancelled it and probably should have. If they had simply said "We will do our best to accommodate you if possible" instead of lecturing us on their policy, I would have completely understood. As a result I was annoyed throughout the dinner, as I observed the number of tables sitting empty after they gave us such as hassle. I can't stand brands that try to position themselves as being more elite exclusive than they actually are. On top of that my steak was extremely seared to a crusty black on the outside. The inside was medium rare as requested but the sear gave it a burnt taste. It was also very hot which was odd because if they let it rest after removing from the grill it should have cooled a bit. The chocolate cake with raspberry sauce was nearly tasteless. But the crab cake starter and scallop with my steak was moist, tender and delicious. Our server Bret was extremely helpful and charming as were all the servers who approached our table. However I just couldn't get past the haughty hostess and tall male manager with the ponytail. We wrapped early and headed to The Study which was a delight and put my mood back in celebration mode with the sparkling First Sip of Censorship cocktail and wonderful mixologist team.So despite the excellent service, I will probably not return to Deans. But I will be back to The Study for sure.

They have a lot of kinks that need to be worked out. Food was average. Slow service. Parking fee very expensive even to dine. There are so many other Steakhouses with overall better experience. Very disappointed. We asked to speak to the Manager to share feedback & never showed up despite being told She was coming. The bar manager did show up and comped the parking fee.I just read all the reviews and a common theme occurred: I don't know what has recently happened but if you read the reviews appropriately 3-months ago it seemed service & food was good. Positive reviews. After that, something happened because the reviews became negative. Also in common was the complaints with Service & waiting to be acknowledged after sitting which is what I experienced & also had to ask someone to attend to our drink and food order. Something happened 3-months ago that resulted in negative shift. Also, the Manager that was supposed to have spoken to us is Chelsea & i guess our request was not important enough to speak with us bc She never did. Not a good impression.

The food here is delicious! The steaks are incredible and the majority of the menu are very large cuts - definitely enough to share. The small plates and sides are a highlight like the tomato salad and bone marrow. We felt like the bread it came with wasn't fresh and they kindly brought us new ones. It's beautiful inside with moody lighting and the patio looks great for Christmas. For fine dining I would say the service doesn't match the vibe but we had a nice time overall.

The location is amazing. They preserved an old schoolhouse building and turned it into a restaurant. Opening up the 2nd floor and leaving the wood beams made a stunning visual display. The service was amazing .. funny, informative and attentive. The food is a mix of excellent and okay ... hince the rating of 4. Pros:1. The opening bread plate is like crack if you are a bread lover .. buttery, salty, light and fluffy!2. The Caesar salad and French onion soup were good and quite large given the meal to come.3. They broil their steaks which makes for a quick charred outside and a juicy inside. (Except .. see cons)4. The creamy spinach was yummy!!!5. The drinks were spot on ... strawberry mile, Paloma, and Jax Pinot Noir were excellent.6. The bourbon pecan pie ... pure heaven if you are a bourbon drinker!Cons:1. The broil does not work well on a lean steak like the filet. The filet was a little dry despite being med rare. As a steakhouse, you get a 5 if you are amazing at your core. This dropped them.2. The whipped potatoes are bland.3. The accompanying sauce for the crab cake did not pair well.Expensive yes! Unique and worth it .. Yes!

Can't say enough good things about Dean's! A little hard to get to with all the construction... (Jan 25) but worth the detour!! The winter experience bubbles are the best!!! We had lunch in the courtyard and it was the most fun ever! The food was absolutely perfect, the green goddess salad with grilled chicken is amazing! The espresso martinis are a great start to the fun! Their wine list is incredible! The service was impeccable! I can't wait to go back!

We visited on Christmas Day and Deans had a special set menu, from which we selected the 14oz Prime Rib, vegetable medley, Yukon potatoes, and the pecan bourbon pie. Next let me say Grace, our server was fabulous, funny and very attentive to our requests. The prime rib was ordered medium rare and it was perfect! It was at least an inch thick if not thicker and delicious. I have to share the salt encrusted buns were decadent. We both had martinis which fantastic. They have a nice wine selection from which we ordered a very nice Malbec. The atmosphere is very soft, inviting with woodwork which complimented to exterior of this refurbished building. The pecan bourbon cake was a nice surprise; you definitely tasted the bourbon, but not overwhelming and seemed to cut the (sometimes) over sweetness of the pecan filling. Fantastic place for a special evening out.

We enjoyed Christmas dinner here and was very lowkey kind of night. Had my little one with us so she was a tad chaotic. The service was a little slow took them awhile before waiter was sent over. Drinks and bread took a little longer than expected. However the waiter tried his best and made us aware he was a little swamped which I could only think it was due to minimal staff due to the holiday. The food came out much quicker. Everything was delicious.

Dean's is an upscale experience with high quality steaks and seafood. We visited to celebrate a special occasion. The Kimpton hotel has modern architecture, whereas the restaurant is located in a historic building with walls of brick and limestone, restored to bring out the textures of stone, wood, and glass. The staff help you feel welcome and explain the menu. There are a la carte options and also well balanced places, like the signature dishes. We choose a Classic (filet, crab, asparagus) and a Dean's Style (filet, lobster). We started with a Caesar salad and chose the grilled broccoli -- a generous portion. The rolls are fresh and delicious, too. It was a special occasion so we topped it off with a towering carrot cake slice, containing layers of spiced cake and creamy frosting. We would definitely come back to Dean's, preferably with a group. It's a relaxing atmosphere that also feels celebratory and uniquely San Antonio, located in the heart of downtown.
