Bailey N. "4/5 Food5/5 Service5/5 AmbianceA great joint to bring friends on a Saturday and enjoy some live music. Our friends from the area mentioned we should try this place out so we obliged...We order chips and queso, along with their 3 count taco plate of bisteq. The chips and queso were okay, the queso was extremely thick and a little difficult to eat but the taste was yummy. The tacos were delicious and they came with rice and beans. They also make their own corn tortillas for the tacos which I appreciated bc they made everything about the tacos that much better!Their margaritas were "okay" as well, more sour mix and you can't really taste even a drop of tequila so I wasn't overly impressed.I should note that everything was a bit spicy, there are chopped jalapeños in almost everything so if you are a weenie about spice (like my wife) you will probably not do well with the spicy foods here but as mentioned the flavors are great. We were also delighted with a live band that was awesome and brought back some old tune rock n roll to our taco night. We will be back!"

"i love fuegos - it was my go-to spot in college station when i was in college. i always get the el presidente or southern comfort tacos. the el presidente is packed with chargrilled chicken, smoked bacon, fried avocado, pico de gallo, jack cheese, and chipotle ranch - seriously, it's life-changing. the southern comfort is hand-breaded fried chicken with chipotle cream corn, crispy potatoes, grilled onions, and fresh country pepper gravy - so flavorful. the portions are huge, so i always wish i could order and eat both! you order at the counter, and they bring the food out fast - super easy. it's been too long since i've had it, and i'm so happy they have one in san marcos - the perfect place to eat after shopping at the outlet malls!"

Benjamin C. "This is definitely a vegan hidden gem. First and foremost, there is no meat at this restaurant. However as a former meat eater all I can say is wow. The food here is so flavorful and delicious. From the first bite you can tell immediately that the food is fresh and cooked to order. From there fresh salsas, appetizers, and entrees you are in from flavorful goodness. We had the fresh salsas and chips which were very crunchy and perfectly salted. We each had their Tampiquene plate which was a cheese enchilada topped with their house-made sauce, a crispy picadillio taco, with rice and beans. The entrees did not disappoint. The service is excellent. Our server was super attentive and very helpful in explaining the vibe of the restaurant. The ambiance of the place is very hipster meets Mexico. A very warm and cozy place. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone vegan or otherwise."

Ryan M. "Pericos offers friendly service, generous portions of delicious Tex-Mex favorites, and a fun, vibrant atmosphere. I can't believe I took so long to visit this place, but I'm glad I did recently, because Pericos has become one of my top-three Mexican restaurants in all of San Antonio. Yes, it's really that good...and you know you can trust ME.No Tex-Mex experience is complete without a great salsa, and Pericos does not disappoint. Their award-winning roasted salsa, served warm (as it should), compliments the fresh, crisp, perfectly seasoned tortilla chips. The smoky fire-roasted tomatoes imbue the salsa with a complex flavor profile absent from the cold, uninspired workhorses found at most Tex-Mex joints around town. I've experienced nothing but friendly, attentive service from every employee, but Christian deserves special acknowledgment. Despite being a relatively new employee (a few months, he told me), he possesses a thorough understanding of the menu and quick to offer refills (yes, another agua fresca, please!) and extra napkins, the latter of which I need whenever I stuff my face with their phenomenal(and messy) pollos asados!I've always associated pollo asado -- the intensely smoky, achiote-rubbed Mexican grilled chicken -- with destination dives on the west side of town. My part of town, the far northside, is not exactly a bastion of authentic Mexican food, so imagine my surprise when I saw that Pericos offered pollos asados! I must admit I was skeptical at first. Would a full-service Mexican restaurant be able to match the alchemical magic of those dedicated chicken joints on the west side? The answer, thankfully, is an unequivocal "yes!" I have ordered this dish at Pericos at least six times in the last two months. Without exception, the chicken has been juicy and intensely savory; the mesquite smoke from the live wood grill chars the skin and caramelizes the achiote pepper rub. The accompanying sides of Mexican street corn and charro beans are also outstanding. Pro tip (yes, I am a professional eater): take advantage of their Tuesday special: a half pollo asado (plus the aforementioned sides) for $13.99. It's an unbeatable value for one of the best chicken dishes you'll find in San Antonio. Speaking of pro tips, here's another: arrive during happy hour and order their mountain of nachos for just $6. I typically prefer my nachos to be dressed individually as opposed to tossed in a pile, but these scratched an itch I didn't know I had. It's nothing fancy: just a heaping pile of chips tossed with velvety homemade queso, refried beans (of the lard variety), fresh pico de gallo, and dollops of picadillo meat. Just order it and thank me later. Pericos, you deserve the highly coveted Ryan M. five-star seal of approval! I'm usually critical of Tex-Mex cuisine, as I find that most places in town don't even try. Pericos, however, stands out as one of the city's best Mexican restaurants. It's nothing fancy, just generous portions of Tex-Mex staples given the respect they deserve. The pollo asado alone is worth the trip!"

I ordered the ground beef puffy taco plate and crispy dogs as an appetizer. The crispy dog was the best one I've had. So delicious. This place is famous for their puffy tacos, though. I liked them, but I think the oil that the tortillas was fried in was not fresh and I could taste it. I also thought the rice was a bit dry. It had good flavor, but it was so subtle, it kinda just tasted like white rice. So I'd really like to see the flavor on the rice really amped up. The salsa that is served with the chips was not spicy at all and really disappointing. Also not a lot of flavor on that either. I'd come here again and bring folks from out of town! It's an experience for sure!"

It's inevitable to draw comparisons, but overall, the experience was solid. The food delivered the familiar flavors we know and love. Everything on the Valerie Special - [1 cheese enchilada with chilli con carne, fajitas, rice and refried beans] - tasted exactly like the Helotes version. My molé enchiladas and sides were equally consistent, with the exception of the molé sauce. While it differed from the Helotes recipe, I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't quite as spicy, but still delicious. While the food hit the spot, the atmosphere fell short. The seating arrangement and decor lacked the same vibe as the Helotes location. Personally, I didn't like it. Despite that, I wouldn't hesitate to return if I had a hankering desire for molé in the area."

(We almost drove 25 min to one across the city)The girl at the counter was very friendly and helpful. A fellow customer overheard me tell her this was our first time getting puffy tacos and she told me that this was her FAVORITE place for puffy tacos. She has been coming for YEARS. We ordered 2 puffy taco plates, one with the tortilla soup and then a few puffed tacos on the side. We all agreed that the puffy tacos were AMAZING. The soup was just ok. I offered for chicken to be in it but I didn't see any. I added some of the salsa to it to make it more flavorful. As for the free chips and salsa... wow. The salsa is SPICY. I like spice and it was hot. The interior and the restrooms were the nicest. Felt more "dive" or "hole in the wall-ish." We're not fancy though. We'll definitely return when we're in town next!"

Blue B. "The key to this classic diner is to stick with what has brought them their well earned glory over the years, and to stay away from the things that don't matter in the grand scheme of things. Yes, the restaurant has seen much better days. It is rough around the edges and someone needs to come in and give some relief to what looks to be an exhausted staff. But let us not lose sight of this restaurant's major contribution to the San Antonio dining landscape: the puffy taco. I dined here for lunch today, and the delectable ensemble of perfection is as good as it has ever been. The puffy taco is a culinary wonder. The shell is a perfect combination of lightness, chewiness, softness, and crunchiness. Complemented perfectly by homemade beef or chicken and a thin, red housemade salsa. If this is not enough for you, I'm not sure what to tell you."

Rudy F. "Been wanting to visit this place out in Boerne for a while now and today finally had my chance. Popular on social media, Chef Mark announced days before that today's mid-week lunch service would include mollejas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweetbread?wprov=sfti1) and I wasn't about to miss my chance again.Upon arriving just after noon, the small-ish restaurant tucked away behind the town square resembled the kind of place I like to frequent to get authentic Mexican food. I would not be disappointed. The INTERIOR of the veteran-owned restaurant was clean and very colorful with plenty of tables. The lively dining room was about 3/4 full when I arrived and the sound of Tejano music coming from the speakers was comforting to my soul.Rather than table service, I was directed to the counter to order and pay for my food and then took a seat at a small table. The food arrived literally seconds after I sat down. The SERVICE from the staff was very friendly and accommodating as well. The FOOD. The mollejas were served in a two-taco plate along with two small styrofoam cups of rice and beans. Plasticware was provided after I ordered at the counter. Considering the price point for a two-taco plate and a small drink, I was expecting a little more, but this was about the food. The (smoked) mollejas were ultimately delicious bringing back memories of my dad making them for me and our family when I was a kid. They were flavorful, juicy and a little smoky. The healthy addition of pico de gallo and the delicious guacamole on the tacos provided a perfect balance and a "party-in-my-mouthful".I wish I could say more about the rice and beans that accompanied the tacos. They weren't MY favorite, but I'm not from the RGV (Rio Grande Valley) where I understand the recipes and flavor profile of the food here were born. That said, I thought both lacked some flavor and could have used additional Mexican spices.Given the higher price point for the meal overall, I could presume that it has to do with the location in Boerne... or it could be the be that the restaurant is only open for lunch service six days a week (closed Sundays), but given the very special menu items Chef Mark incorporates into his regular menu, it was a decent VALUE. I can't wait to see what's coming to the menu next!"

Prices are a little more than average but the it's worth it. Once in a while the tacos might be a little smaller than I like, but for the amount of times I've eaten here, it's ok. I've had smaller tacos from so many other restaurants that it's almost the norm now.
