Northeast Tea House is a special place, really unlike anything else in the Twin Cities. You can experience Gongfu tea service here, where you're given a kettle and your selection of tea leaves to repeatedly steep and drink small cups of. It's a very shareable experience, and one any tea lover should try. They are also one of just two matcha mills in the US, making it a must-stop for matcha fans as well. If neither of these are quite what you're looking for, they also offer single cups of tea, iced tea, and baked goods that punch way above their weight. They encourage a screen-free environment here, creating a serene and grounded an environment. It's the perfect place to (quietly) catch up with a friend, or bring a book to read.

In-house milled matcha was excellent. Really appreciated that it wasn't pre-sweetened.Staff was knowledgeable and helpful, the menu was a little confusing at first but they will explain it.Good tea selection. They have iced and hot teas. Nice ambiance, will definitely go back.

This is a great tea experience for those wanting an authentically prepared drink with a very zen ambiance. For matcha lovers, they mill their matcha in house where you can watch! I can imagine this is any tea lover's dream spot in Minneapolis. The tea and desserts are top notch -- it can be hard to find more authentic Asian foods and drinks but I feel like this place definitely fills that gap. I ordered the iced single house-milled matcha "Samidori" flavor and it was basically what I anticipated: matcha over ice. I usually enjoy a matcha latte with sweetener but I did know what to expect before coming. I wouldn't say my palate is refined enough to be able to discern different matcha flavors so I can't speak too much on that, but the description of the flavor profile was "Apple, rose water, pastry." My friend ordered an iced "Silly Rabbit" (Yunnan Yellow Tea w/ Lychee and Soursop Syrups) and that one was my favorite. It tasted kind of like a peach green tea lemonade from Starbucks, but fresher. We also ordered the chocolate chip banana bread (yum!) and melon and yuzu mochi. I was pleasantly surprised with the mochi. I had never had the yuzu flavor, but it was a citrus-like flavor and I really liked it!The place itself is well decorated and feels like you stepped into a whole different atmosphere than the bustling and busy construction-filled streets outside. They have nice, calming music playing inside as well as a big fish tank with cool fish. It's a very relaxing space to be in. They had a long table with floor cushions for people to sit on and there are tea pots placed on every table there. I don't know too much about tea and its serving practices, but I can see how tea enthusiasts would feel right at home at Northeast Tea House.

There's a gorgeous fish tank here that sets the calm vibe. It makes it great to drink tea and have a little bite to eat. The tea is perfectly made and the moon cakes were a nice treat on the side.

What a gem!!! I'm a "matcha latte from a local coffeehouse" girlie, but the employees here made their more traditional tea options so accessible to me! They are so educated about matcha and what you might enjoy the most, and don't judge you if you've only ever had matcha with milk, too! :) I had an iced drink that was matcha with a white tea base, and I did really love it. Also, it is so remarkably peaceful inside it felt like walking into a spa. I wish I was local to have such a "breath of fresh air" afternoon treat nearby locally!

A lovely and unique tea house for the Twin Cities. Great place to relax and enjoy a conversation. It was busy when we were there and took awhile to get our tea but there was only one worker there (the only reason for my 4 out of 5 stars). However tea is not something to be rushed so go with that in mind and you won't be disappointed. We went with our son and he didn't get too bored thanks to the large fish tank. They have a wide variety of tea and our black tea tastes delicious. Will hopefully be back for a date night with my wife.

This was such a cool find and it reminded me exactly of the tea-houses that you find in Asia! Of note, the place is more of a place to have meetings with others and they request that laptops aren't used here (I was originally going to come here earlier in the day to get some work done, but I saw the notice and decided to stop by a bit later). They have a ton of different teas to choose from and a lot of seating. I went with the Matcha - they serve really truly authentic matcha here and I didn't realize it wouldn't be sweet, but the owner was so nice to give me a free mochi on the house to balance between the tastes of sweet and savory which I thought was a very kind gesture. I hope to come back one day to spend time and it'd be a nice place to journal, read, or hangout with friends!

A true tea lover's spot. I avoided coming here for a long time because I thought it was matcha only, which didn't interest me, but their tea menu is in fact much more extensive. The tea is perfectly steeped and ready to enjoy quickly from the small cups. It has flavor! Discernible fruit or toasted rice or grass or milky notes. Most tea served at coffee shops is scalded, over steeped or too much leaf to water ratio, and therefore bitter or tannic. It's an afterthought to a coffee focused service, which is what makes a tea house like Northeast so special. Another remarkable thing about this business is the focus on enjoying the experience. Patrons are not on their laptops - there is no in house wifi. People are socializing, or reading, or counting how many hermit crabs are in the aquarium. To serve only tea and not be a work spot - two great ways to swim against the tide and it hasn't stopped them from being successful.
