Art Deco Balcony
A boutique B&B like an English Cottage in the Cotswolds.
It's like a visit to the south of France with the original art and all.

The good:-Jacuzzi tub-Availability (hard to find a B&B in Stillwater)-Free parking-Quiet location -Lovely bottle of wine in the room, coffee, beverages-Gas fireplace was a nice touchThe bad:-Breakfast was offsite at the Lowell Inn and it was terrible! (Not the fault of the B&B of course but we expected breakfast to be at the house like every other B&B we have stayed at. Plus, when paying a lot for a room you expect a nice breakfast. It was low-end greasy-spoon diner quality at best).-The decor left something to be desired. A lot of mismatched items, overly decorated, old carpet that screamed 1980s/1990s. The photos felt misleading and the room did not live up to the pictures.-Outdated bedding that felt like it from from last century (or my grandma's house?) -Price: paid over $250 for one night. We could have gotten much more for less and that was disappointing. I agree with another reviewer that the owners need to visit other establishments to update the B&B and what they offer, otherwise lower the prices significantly. I have been to much nicer B&Bs for a much lower price. Just trying to be honest about what to expect, I really wanted to love this place.

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Art Deco suite about a month ago and absolutely LOVED it. It is so comfy, cozy, unique. When we entered our room there was classical music playing-a VERY nice touch! A half bottle of wine from the Stillwater st Croix vineyards was waiting for us, another plus. The jacuzzi was wonderful, balcony private, and the outdoor pool was also a lot of fun. Breakfast at the Lowell inn was incredible. The one and only thing that I would change is that there's no room temp control and we both found it a little warm, but the owner was very kind and had it turned down a few degrees for us. We'll definitely be back.

A truly charming bed and breakfast located in beautiful and historic Stillwater, MN. The owners and inn keepers are kind and quick to answer. You feel welcome from the moment you pull up the nice quiet street. They provide everything you need for a relaxing weekend. I personally enjoyed a nice long soak with bubbles and bath salts in the large spa in my room. What I really enjoyed was the location. The ability to sit by the pool and look at the beautiful landscape or walk two blocks to the cutest park. You are also just minutes from historic downtown Stillwater if you are looking for more to do. I highly recommend James Mulvey Inn to anyone!-Liz (Texas)

great location but also feels very secluded with a balcony overlooking beautiful grounds. Bed was very comfortable and the amenities just perfect for a romantic getaway.

My husband and I have stayed here several times and we absolutely love it! The landscaping and balcony are so beautiful, we always feel so relaxed here. We have visited all of the bed and breakfast in Stillwater and this is our Favorite because it is so peaceful. We also love the fact it has a fridge, coffee maker and microwave for reheating last nights dinner leftovers. The whirlpool tub and fireplace are wonderful too.We have always stayed in the bordeaux room but we did peek in the art deco room when the cleaning crew was there to let us see it and it looks amazing too. I think it feels like you are in a fantasy tree house because the rooms are on the second floor and the trees surround the balcony...so wonderful for sipping wine and coffee. Wow I could go on forever about this bed and breakfast... speaking of breakfast Lowell inn breakfasts are legendary! Thanks for all the happy past and future memories!!!

I will try to be as fair as possible with this review, as there were some positives.First: my wife and I love to frequent different bed and breakfast locations, partially for the quaint, out of the way locations, partially to meet new people (proprietors) and partially for the different food presentations, flavors, but mostly for the seclusion and alone time we get to spend. So, with that, I will put my comments into categories:1) Advertise as a bed and breakfast:-Bed: was hard as a rock. It seems as though it sunk a little bit but overall was so hard that my wife had to get out of the bed and sit in the chair for a couple of hours because it hurt her body, and for me it took me a couple days to get back to normal.-Breakfast: usually at a B&B the main house is where breakfast is served. Not here. You will have to travel almost a mile to another location, to have breakfast. The breakfast at the other location is incredible AND is a B&B itself, which is where we will choose to stay if we decide to go to Stillwater for another overnight retreat. It was disappointing to find out that breakfast was not going to be served there.-Main house:Usually in a B&B the main house or the main part of the house is not only where you get your breakfast, it is where you meet the proprietors, get to sit around (in front of a fire, watch a movie, or a quiet place to chat with your mate), or at the very least a place where you can go to grab some snacks, make a coffee/tea/cocoa/etc. and relax and take in the surroundings. The main house is off limits because someone lives there.2) The room:-Bathroom: there was no door where the toilet is. We stayed in the Art Deco room and the sink is as soon as you walk in. Look left and you see the older jacuzzi tub and an opening to the right of the tub, which was where the toilet was. Was not a fan of this at all.-Fireplace: gas fireplace, it was awesome and threw off good heat-Balcony: was a balcony overlooking the woods, which would have been nice in nicer weather.-Pool: Closed for the winter but not something my wife and I look for when looking for a B&B.-In Room Coffee and snacks: we did have a coffee pot with 4 K-cups. So if you want to hang out in the room and relax with some coffee, you get 4 K-cups to do it with. Also, you get two chocolate (Hershey) bars and 2 bags of peanuts (small bags). You also get 2 small orange juice bottles, 2-water bottles and 2 cans of soda in the fridge.*Once again, at a B&B one of the charms is to be able to go down to the main area and grab some snacks whenever you want, usually homemade cookies and such, perhaps some brandy, but definitely lots of coffee/tea and cocoa options. Was pretty saddened about this.-Television: only a monitor, DVD player and some DVDs, which were very outdated DVDs and not a great variety at all.-Alarm Clock: It DID have an alarm clock. This was the first B&B where the alarm clock was actually set. We did not set the alarm, yet early in the morning the alarm starts to blast away. This was the proverbial 'cherry' on top of our experience overall. The cost was slightly over $200.Was it worth the cost? Not at all.Being that it was the winter time, the price was not relative to the benefits: no breakfast in the same location. No snacks. No abundance of beverage choices/options. No meeting proprietor(s). Uncomfortable bed.As I am sure others may find this to be an adequate pricing for what is presented, I have been to enough B&B's to say it is not, especially in the Midwest. My suggestions to the proprietors:Journey to other B&B's and see how they set their place up and why, most importantly the 'why'. It is the experience people are paying for, which also means that many things could be overlooked if other things are brought into the experience. Some B&Bs may not have technology and only one proprietor, but that proprietor goes out of their way to deliver yummy treats, personable conversation and an ambiance that is so very much worth the cost and then some. For half the cost, we could have gotten the same thing, except have an actual door to the bathroom, and not have to travel a mile to get to have breakfast. I am not trying to hurt any feelings with this review, just hoping to prepare others for the experience (or lack of) so they can make an educated decision. Stillwater is a nice town, lots of great shops, good coffee and nice people, so it is a great place to explore.

I love the privacy and peacefulness of the Englishman's Carriage House. Each room has it's own Jacuzzi and fireplace and the back yard area with the beautiful pool is so quiet. Highly recommend this B&B.

This is a return visit to the Mulvey, now called the James Mulvey Englishman's Carriage House. Same fantastic wooded setting, but they are renting only the Carriage House rooms, hence there is a change of address to 807 Harriet St S. The Carriage House rooms were always the best anyway- very architectural with lots of nice original art. So now they do an off site breakfast at the Lowell Inn which proved to be a plus for us because you can go at 10. But it is all a more private experience in a couple of the best rooms in town. We loved it.
