I still have not figured out how one area can have so many amazing live music venues but the Twin Cities and live music go hand-in-hand. That said, if you like live music as I do), this place needs to be on your list to check out. Back in June, I attended a Prince tribute performance (Nothing Compares 2P) here and neither the venue nor the music disappointed. The layout is great; starting with an elevated staged and just below that is a dance floor and beyond that area is seating (tables/chairs). There are great views of the stage from mostly anywhere in the space and most importantly, the sound system was on point. Because of demand, for this performance, the dance floor was converted to seating and while understandable, other than in your seat, it made dancing virtually nonexistent. So much so that if someone stood up to dance at their table, the staff working the event would quickly swoop in ask them to be seated so as not to block the view of the people behind them. While relatively large, there is a single bar which was well-stocked and staffed when I was there. I am not sure if it the norm, but on the night I was there they had a $20 minimum for credit card use. Also, the only water they were serving was bottled (no cups of water) so be mindful of that. While this was my first visit to the Minnesota Music Café, it won't be the last. I will gladly return here for future performances.

The venue, no complaints as far as live music goes. The location is not in the best part of town and cars get broken into and/or catalytic converter stolen. If you go, park close to the doors, if possible, and be alert you are not in a safe part of St. Paul when walking to your car.

What an amazing hole in the wall. I was not expecting to see such a large stage given the view from the road. Not a lot on tap but they do have the classics. It gives a mixed feeling between you're going to get stabbed in the bathroom and you're going to hear the next big thing long before anyone else. It seemed like they have excellent parking given the location so that part is nice. They do have a coverage charge unfortunately though but I think it was like 7 dollars. Check it out!

Remember almost 30 years ago when you used to go to bars and listen to live music and when you got home your hair was all smoky? This bar will seem very familiar! The floor has had 1 million beers spilled on it, the tables don't match, the bathrooms are meant for drunk people who are not paying attention ( although everything was clean.) But still a fun place to come for live music! If you are at all in need of vegetables or non greasy food, don't plan on eating there (although our food was served fast!)

Last Friday this venue hosted a performance by She Rock Girls Rock Retreat summer camp. Third to twelfth grade girls played rock and roll songs they'd been practicing all week. The sound guy was training someone new in, and left that person in charge. The new sound person couldn't handle it. When the sound guy returned, he creeped on the little girls. The GRR staff found a squished, dead mouse on the floor of the bar, which the staff simply picked up with a paper towel.

Unfortunately, we came into this place at just after midnight and wete told that the band was playing till 115a - we agreed on paying the cover charge with one free entry but discounts shouldn't be allowed till after 1230. The band shut down just before 1230a. We went back to the front desk and they admitted they were wrong but the band quit earlier and we had already got a discount. Touch luck or go pound sand. Be very careful when trusting their staff. True place of buyer beware they don't stand by their product. This is not a place I will be coming back to without management not taking proper action.

This place is a lot of fun for dancing. But of an older crowd, but if you want to get dressed up & dance the night away to great music, this is your place.

Tough review to write. One the one hand I thought the venue was great for dancing. The dance floor is below the band and the seating area so it's kind of managed. And it seemed like everyone in the place was there to dance so I had the table to myself. I won't rate on the band as it obviously changes nightly. Also, I can appreciate the history of this place. On the negative side, doesn't look like it's been updated in forever. There was a serious lack of service. I won't fault the staff since I'm pretty sure it was one bartender and one server for the whole place. Still, do you like making money? It was tough getting a drink. The server would clean up the empties and not take my order. Going to the bar was fruitless. The guy taking cover charges had zero sense of humor. Anyway, it was a fun night. Cool, divey place. If the right band was playing I'd go back. Someone mentioned bringing a flask. Probably not a bad idea.
