My sister pointed out Chip's one cold, snowy afternoon when we were driving by on our way to a local gift shop to pick up a birthday card for our mom. She said, "see that green and white awning?" "Yep." "You'd never know it, but that's one of the coolest places in St. Paul, great drinks and great food."We stopped in for a cocktail, having already made reservations at another local restaurant. Sure enough, her description was apt. It's a swanky little hole-in-the-wall that you would never suspect even if you were walking by on the sidewalk. The place just vanishes from the outside. We sat at the bar and were immediately greeted by the bartender. After perusing the menu, I asked for a recommendation. I prefer tart over sweet every time and asked about a drink on the menu called the "Zombie Walk". She said, "Wanna try it?", then proceeded to mix a taster. What!?Never, ever, in my lifetime of indulding in alcoholic beverages have I ever seen, nor been offered, a "taster" of a mixed drink, even in the poshest of posh cocktail bars. I was flabbergasted and told her as much. She laughed, feigned surprise, then said, "well, we like to take care of people here and if it leads to a new customer, it's worth the extra effort." I'm paraphrasing, of course, but that's the gist. The Zombie Walk was absolutely delicious and I ordered a glass ... And get this, it tasted identical to the taster!? What! [my best Minion expression] How's that for mixology! For artistry! Yeah, I'll be going back and, next time, I'll be stuffing their famous smashburger into my facehole.
