Did you know that there is a Nature Preserve behind Costco in Citrus Heights? It's a 47 acre open space nature preserve that is bisected by a long elevated wooden walkway/bridge that doubles as a wildlife viewing platform. At the Costco end of the preserve is a small demonstration garden for native and drought tolerant plants. There are a few benches here so take that Costco dog outside and enjoy the quiet. If you head out across the long bridge you'll cross over a wetlands preserve and eventually end up at Van Maren Park. The paved portion of the park is not very long, however there are dirt trails in the wetlands area that you can access for exploring more of the park.

The map here on Yelp shows the directions to Rusch park instead. The correct address is 7000 Auburn Blvd, Citrus Heights, CA 95610 as all the other reviews say it's behind Costco.

It's a beautiful place! Been going there for a while! I cross Greenback and go down past the post office and police station to get there! Really nice walk. We have seen all kinds of wildlife, including pheasants. It's a wonderful place to walk to and hang out at!

Super disappointed in this place! I was hoping for a better experience. The area and layout and trails are wonderful! Definitely well thought out. Lots of kids on bikes which is great. However, so much garbage and dumping everywhere. So much! Also, transients. I could deal with that if they weren't littering in front of me making huge messes without a concern. I said something about littering and he could care less. Just not a safe feeling atmosphere unfortunately. Maybe if cleaned up.

Nice little nature preserve. Fairly small as far as hiking goes. Theres more short walking trails, not really hiking. More of a good place if you have kids as this nature preserve does connect with a neighborhood children's type park. There are no restrooms at the preserve or the childrens park though (I know right?).The hummingbird, butterfly and bee garden located at the entrance to the park behind the Costco is pretty cool.
