I used to shop at Gold Star Mart before Kulvinder passed away because it was close and he was a great guy who kept his prices low and helped whenever he could. Literally let us put stuff on tab. I started working there to help Simi (his wife) out but then she sold it and the new owners changed everything. I started going out of my way to shop here for stuff because it was cheaper and I could no longer afford to shop at the store I worked at and shopped at since I moved downtown. My owner found out and gave me a discount to price match their cigarettes so I wouldn't shop there but now that I don't work there I've been shopping at Southside since they don't price match for me anymore and my cigarettes are almost a full $3 cheaper here. Been a regular for months now and they're SO helpful and kind, the store is always clean and organized, never runs out of what I like to eat and drink, and the owner will stock things for regular customers if you ask them! Definitely recommend the extra block or two if you're in the area, it's worth it in the prices alone. Plus they sell single beer. They even open earlier and close later. Only negative is that their hours aren't EXACTLY correct. Been there 10-15 mins before closing and found it closed so I talked to a worker and they said they close around 10:40-10:45pm instead of 11 so keep that in mind!Oh and random story but once in the beginning they were out of my cigarettes (now they never are because they know I'm a regular) and the employee didn't try to upsell me or even downsell me. He told me straight up that I could go to Gold Star Mart if I didn't mind the price increase and that another store had just opened up a few blocks down and he had heard their prices were reasonable. That was so nice and something we were not supposed to do at Gold Star when I worked there! It was so nice of him that I just bought another brand of cigarettes from them anyway because that's what a community market should do! Look out for the community. We weren't even supposed to tell customers that Southside had single beers EVEN THOUGH WE DIDN'T EITHER because they were hoping customers didn't know about Southside and would just buy a 4 or 6 pack from us. Anything to make money. This place is legit! I'll add photos of the inside next time I go because there are none right now and that's a shame because it's a nice little store in there. I think they remodeled when they got new owners a long time ago because it wasn't always so nice. I honestly think Gold Star modeled their store after Southside because they're almost the same with the flooring, counter, built in coolers, etc.

Clerk has a bad attitude. Items are generally overpriced. I asked if I could pay card, and charged me a .75 cent transaction fee. I offered to pay cash instead, and he just shrugged his shoulders. I recommend going elsewhere.

With only two reviews posted for this fairly well-trafficked little market, I thought it time to throw my opinion in the mix. South Side Market, aptly named because it sits across from South Side park, is a quaint little grab-and-go for anyone in need of one or two items, from litto tickets to snacks to drinks and more. I won't say they have the best selection or the best prices, but they are a corner store in an area without many and convenient to a large local neighborhood, including many park goers, so they have convenience on their side. I found the clerk to be quite friendly and I found the selection of energy drinks I'd expect from a larger market like Market 5-0-5 or Safeway. In short, come for the convenience, not necessarily the prices or to satisfy a long grocery list.

Wow I can't believe that the South Side Market has no reviews. It's time to change that! I recently stumbled into this small neighborhood market, located across the street from south side park, to grab some beer and I was pleasantly surprised at the excellent selection of local and regional craft beers. They truly care about this important matter, and I respect that! Just as important, the folks who work here always greet you with a friendly smile! I will be sure to make this my regular beer supply outpost!

Great selection of local beer, snacks and other odds and ends conveniently placed in the midtown area. The same clerk always asks how my days going, and what's going on with my weekend.
