Came here for Ffree Museum Weekend and it was pretty interesting. Even though it was on the first floor, they had some interesting stuff out. They had some of the medical supplies from the past and how it has changed over the years.

Went to the Museum of Medical History on Sat 2/6 FREE Sacramento Museum Day 2010. Fourth spot of the day. This place is only 1 floor and small. It's worth maybe 30min-1hr to see everything. My favorite thing was the Iron Lung, Live Leeches (from Leeches USA in NYC), and the demo Dr. Bob LaPerriere (museum curator) gave where he turned off the lights & shocks himself.Lots of strange & crazy medical equipments they used back in the old days. Books w/ pics were cool to look at, boring to read.Separate bathrooms available.Worth a visit at least once if in the area.

Such an informational and unique museum! I love coming here. There's placards all over the museum that will tell you a little bit of the history.

I am so glad to have discovered this hidden gem because of Sac Museum Day. Being a nursing student, this place was like a candy store for me because of all the history inside a small museum. The docents were very knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions we had. Fun times! I told lots of my friends who also didn't know this place existed and now want to visit!

5380 Elvas Avenue, Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95819 916.452.2671 916.452.2690 FAX infossvms.org This is a great place. It's a historical look at Sacramento's medical history, from quackery to common Chinese medicines of the Gold Rush to obstetrics implements that would scare the bejeesus out of any sane person. There is an iron lung in the entry way that can be switched to "on", watch it rhythmically pump air... there are leeches in a bucket for medicinal purposes only... There is an intact library full of medical texts from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Pretty great, but you can't touch them. Be sure to sign the guest book. And leave a donation. This is someone's dream, a medical museum that categorically defines the goldrush to today. It's awesome and inspiring, and my only beef is that it's only one big room with a few curios in the front hallway. I think you have to get the Sierra Sacramento group to open it up for you, it's locked up otherwise. Good place to take a first date if you are a bit odd...

Visited the Museum of Medical History on Free Museum Day. It's a small building but it's right up my alley, as I am a fan of the obscure, the antique, and the weird.Scores of little glass bottles that hold everything from tinctures to quackery cure-alls to poisons, metal surgery instruments, medical machines, hundreds of old books, scale models, hospital furniture, leeches, and a big iron lung to greet you at the door. Some things can be creepy and not for the faint of heart (looking at *you*, jar of leeches and antique suppositories/pessaries) but hey, medicine ain't always pretty! What the museum lacks in size, it makes up for in quality. Check it out at least once!
