What an improvement in location! So much better than the concrete jungle under the freeway from years past. Discovery Park was perfect for families that wanted to come out and make a day of the event. There were a lot more infants and kids at this one than I had ever seen before. Even for someone that's not real big on the short set, it was cool to see parents able to relax and let the kids play among the trees. Having the grass available for seating eased the pressure to find a table as well. There were plenty of tables to be found, however. Where was everybody? Guess the weather or Hangtown kept people away. On the way over, I was seriously debating whether or not I would stay for The Chairman truck if the line was already an hour long. An hour? Ha! Try two minutes. Seriously, there were two people in front of us at 11:15. It was incredible! When we first ordered, they were waiting for steamed buns, but the cashier offered to take our order and text us as soon as the order was ready. Sure enough, 45 minutes later I got the text and had no trouble just picking them up. What service! Because of the delay, we had to tide ourselves over with a baked pork belly bun. Wow! I thought the steamed buns were a treat, but this had me rethinking which might be my favorite. The baked version has a butteriness to it that really complements the tender pork belly and tangy pickled radish. Both are divine. If your food tank is empty, I'd do baked. If you've already been sampling and only have a half tank, steamed it is. After I was done ordering, I stepped over to Koja Kitchen where the line was a bit longer, but still took less than ten minutes. So awesome after attending at times where either one of these trucks would have easily been an hour line. The Kojas are worth waiting. Such unique little sandwiches with their garlic rice "buns". They really stand apart from the other trucks with that innovative new spin. The short rib was super tender and delicious, making it easily one of the best food truck items I've ever tried. I wasn't as big of a fan of their criss-cut fries. They were above-average loaded fries with little chunks of bulgogi sprinkled over the top. I just thought the Sriracha was a little overpowering.Another happy surprise at this event was coming across An Honest Pie for the first time. They don't come down to Sacramento very often (truck is based in Grass Valley). I had always wanted to try their buttermilk pie, it's such a unique flavor to find. At this event, they were also selling several varieties of savory pies. I got one buttermilk and one chicken. The buttermilk exceeded my high expectations. I was in heaven with the sweet, creamy filling wrapped in that flaky crust. Chicken was delicious as well. After reading the touching story behind the truck, I'm an even bigger fan http://anhonestpie.com/the-story/Whenever I hit the once a year event, I can't resist going a little crazy and ordering extras. Our fridge is now full with empanadas from El Porteno and extra baos from The Chairman. Thankfully, they were nice enough to hand out free goodie bags to the first hundred or so people. That was an unexpected treat that really came in handy to carry all our booty home.Perusing the line of 45 trucks, I started to feel a little bad for some of the operators as the day went on. There were truly no lines at most of the trucks. Koja and Chairman stayed consistently busy, but most of the local trucks were dead while we were there. We skipped the parking fee and found street parking by the apartment complexes on the other side of Garden Highway. It's just a short walk and that $10 fee went towards some good eats. Plus, after all that delicious food we could use a walk.

This year's Sactomofo Food Event was amazing. The location was hundred times better than before since there was more space and the set up was much better. If you drive, you do have pay $10 to park. There were a total of 44 food trucks, that's a lot of food trucks! I went to the most popular trucks which were Koja and Chairman. The line was long but it moved pretty fast. There were lots of seating and weather was nice and cool. Overall, fun day!
