Got the lemon blue berry cake and the heath bar this time. First time trying the lemon blueberry cake and it was good. Just the right amount of sweetness to it and you can taste both the lemon and blueberry. The heath bar is always good - rich, decadent, very sweet and a nice treat to enjoy once in a while, incrementally (= The staff here are always friendly and I love the diner theme.

Delicious!! We had ordered the chocolate peanut butter cake and it was delish. You need nothing more than a small slice. Very rich and peanut buttery. It was clean inside and customer service was good.

Two stars for the friendly service. We haven't been to Rick's in about 5 years so decided to give it a try after an event downtown. We had the lemon raspberry cake and the German chocolate. Both pieces went into the trash. The lemon raspberry cake itself was pretty nice but the frosting tasted like pure grease. It was nothing even remotely close to buttercream. The German chocolate cake was dry and the frosting also tasted like grease. There was very little, if any, coconut in the frosting. Americano coffee tasted like hot water. Far too expensive for the quality.

Stopped by recently while visiting a friend in Sacramento and fell in love with Rick's dessert diner. The cakes are absolutely stunning and there are so many different varieties. The line was long but went by quick on a Saturday night. Service was excellent. Perfect diner vibes. I ordered the Mississippi mud pie and my hubs got the Black Forest cake. My mud pie was fabulous, I enjoyed every bite and would get it again. My husband thought the Black Forest cake could be more fresh, hence the 4/5 stars. We got a few items to go...a cannoli, pecan pie, and cheesecake. All delish. Next time I'd get the ice cream sundae.

My first time going into Rick's Dessert Diner in search of their German Chocolate Brownie for my hubby's birthday treat. Unfortunately they didn't have the brownie I wanted but we did get a piece of German Chocolate Cake, a soft and buttery snickerdoodle and a Heath Bar Brownie and oh my goodness was that brownie delicious. More like a giant piece of fudge sitting on top of a yummy cookie crust. We will definitely be back to try new treats, any recommendations?

Rick's is known for their desserts BUT the big sign outside says they're now serving the Best Deli Sandwiches in Sac and I had to try them first hand. I was on J street for meetings and took advantage of this perfect timing to enjoy lunch from Rick's Dessert Diner. For me it's typically an evening stop for dessert or LATE night spot because they're open until 11pm Sun-Th and until 1am F-Sat.I highly suggest trying them for lunch though! When I stopped in a little after 12:30pm on a Friday it was empty and I was greeted right away. I asked the staff about the sandwiches and they let me know about some of their suggestions- they have a menu of sandwich options and a build your own menu and it's all customizable depending on your preferences.I filled out a couple of the sandwich sheets so I could try one of their creations and a build your own option. As I worked on these the restaurant started getting busier with lunch customers.I ended up ordering the Brando ($15.99) that comes with pastrami, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, Thousand Island dressing, and their signature Sourdough roll. It also came with lettuce and tomato. On my Build Your Own ($15.99) I chose the Signature Sourdough with Deli Dressing, Bourbon Ridge Ham and Genoa Salami, Provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, banana peppers and bell peppers. These sandwiches are made of fresh rolls and the Signature Sourdough is unique- it was darker than I'm used to on the outside and flavorful but fluffy on the inside. The meat options are from Boar's Head. Both sandwiches were big and filled with toppings. I actually enjoyed the Brando more than my build your own option- they were both tasty though.I would 100% come back for another sandwich and I'd love to try more of the options on their menu. They also have coffee, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos and alcohol options on top of the dessert options everyone knows them for. While I don't know if I'd say they have the best Deli Sandwiches is Sac- they certainly were delicious!

Overall? We had a pretty awesome experience here. Perfect timing: no wait, smooth service, and everything came out without a hitch. The retro 50s diner vibe? Loved it. It really sets the tone for a fun, laid back visit. Service was fast, friendly, and overall, the desserts hit the spot (mostly)Parking? Street, not hardHere's what we tried:Fruit Basket Slice (4.5/5):Layers of sponge cake, vanilla custard, fresh fruits, and whipped cream frosting. Light, airy, and refreshing. I wouldn't have minded a bit more depth and richness in the flavor, but otherwise, it was a winNut Berry Torte (3.5/5):Five nut soufflé layers with berries, Grand Marnier white chocolate mousse, whipped cream, and a berry topping. It had all the right ingredients, but for me, it didn't quite come together. The flavor felt muted, good, but not memorable

Ricks dessert diner is a fun family friendly spot serving delicious treats. The line is always long but it goes quickly. I stopped by after dinner with some friends. I ordered the tuxedo cake and my friend accidentally knocked it out of my hands onto the floor. They kindly replaced it without me even asking! The cake was delicious and I had to save the rest for another day.

Dating back years ago, to when I first passed by while visiting friends in town, Rick's Dessert Diner has always piqued my curiosity. In part for more aesthetic reasons (love the art deco font of their signage above the door), but mostly because of what the concept of a "dessert diner" consisted of. Do they fuse diner favorites and desserts together into sweet and savory creations or is it literally just a dessert shop in a diner setting? Both sounded equal parts interesting and appealing, but more than anything else, my inquiring brain needed to know and my stomach wanted to find out!Inside, the decor has a really nice retro diner sort of feel to it (it reminds me of Mel's Drive-In in SF) and they've got a ton of seating - booths that are perfect for small groups and date nights, longer tables for larger groups, and some tables outside which are ideal for those warm summer nights. As for the menu, they've got a slate of sandwiches to offer, but really, as their name suggests, it's all about the desserts here. A lot of them. In addition to the cakes, pies, tortes, tarts, and cheesecakes that fill up most of their display cases, they also have smaller treats like cannolis, eclairs, cream puffs, bars, cookies, brownies, and ice cream sundaes. Whether you're looking for something decadent, fruity, chocolatey, or even gluten-free, there's bound to be something for everyone!-- LEMON RASPBERRY CAKE - Sponge Cake with Lemon, Raspberry, and Whipped Cream...$8.95 (slice)I love lemon flavored desserts, so this immediately jumped out at me, but this was more good than great. The cake itself was moist and the raspberry and lemon made a nice contrast of sweet and tart. I just wish the lemony flavors were more prominent.-- FRUIT BASKET - Alternating Layers of Sponge Cake and Vanilla Custard with Fresh Fruits and Whipped Cream...$8.95 (slice)This may have been "simpler" than the others we tried, but it was easily my favorite. The cake was just as good, the fruits were all fresh, and I liked that the vanilla custard wasn't too sweet. In fact, I wish there had been more of it!-- STRAWBERRY BAGATELLE - Light Sponge Cake soaked in Grand Marnier, Topped with Whole Strawberries & White Chocolate Grand Marnier Mousse, and Smothered with Whipped Cream and Strawberries...$8.95 (slice)As good as this looked (and sounded), I this fell a bit short. I loved how big the strawberries were, as well as the texture of the mousse, but I found the taste of the Grand Marnier a little heavy (though, others may feel differently). -- CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY MOUSSE TORTE - Layers of Chocolate Souffle, Filled with with White Chocolate Grand Marnier Mousse and Fresh Raspberries, Iced with Grand Marnier Chocolate, and Topped with Whipped Cream and Raspberries...$8.95 (slice)Not too shabby. The Grand Marnier in this one wasn't nearly as assertive and the chocolate souffle, mousse, and raspberries complemented each other really well. I just wish there were more raspberries mixed into the middle of the cake. One thing about the cakes here that I've seen mentioned by a few others is that the prices for them are a bit high. At about $9 per slice, I agree that it's more of a splurge to come here, but I'd also argue that's the entire premise in coming here - to treat yourself to a nice, little dessert. So, in that vein, it's not all that terrible and only a slight premium to support a small business so that there's the option of coming here at all, even if it's more of a novelty than a regular sort of spot. While we may not have been left as enamored as others have been by the cakes here, I wouldn't mind coming back to try some of the other desserts that Rick's Dessert Diner has to offer. In particular, their key lime pie, banana creme pie, and lemon bars looked so tempting! Maybe with a scoop of ice cream too, especially since they source theirs from Gunther's!
