I WILL NEVER shop here again. Mostly order all my hair and products online and only shop in person if I absolutely have too. I was gonna go to target, but I thought the beauty supply would have some better options. They didn't, and they followed me around the store. It's cool though, you don't want my coin I'll keep it. You ain't even gotta worry about it.

I've only lived in this area for about a year. I came to this place because it is located close to my home. I have purchased here previously, but found the atmosphere unpleasant, as items are locked away, and you are hounded throughout the store almost immediately. But I gave the store another chance today. Never again. I was purchasing items and checking my phone for a Pinterest video. I went to the counter to ask where I might find "rod curlers", which I enunciated clearly. Without looking up from his phone, I was told which aisle to go to. As I walked away, I overhead him say to another salesperson, "I don't understand why THEY always ask for raw curlers." As I said, I clearly enunciated "ROD CURLERS", so I knew that he misheard me. But that wasn't the issue. He "other-ized" me. I am a THEY. I knew what THEY he was talking about. And once I logged onto Yelp and read these reviews, I got confirmation.I used to go to an Asian owned beauty supply store in my old neighborhood, but the experience was VERY different. The owner, an Asian man, was very welcoming and helpful. He was extremely knowledgable about the products AND about African American hair. The aisles were wide and well-lit. He employs African Americans, Latinas and other non Asian people in his store. He was kind and courteous, and so were his employees. A vastly different experience than here at James Beauty Supply. So I'm not saying that all Asian owned beauty supply stores are disrespectful and/or bigoted. Not all disparage a large segment of their customer base openly. But that's what happened today at James, and for that reason, I will NEVER go back. If you expect to make money off of my culture, then you better respect it AND my people. And you better not cry "Asian hate!", when the people that you treat like dirt don't support your business. It's not Asian hate, it's Asshole-hate. You sir, are an asshole, and it's not because you're Asian. I have a healthy respect and deep reverence for various Asian cultures. So, my review is not about that. My review is about your open contempt for a large part of your customer base. If you don't want us in your store, then stop stocking Black hair care products. If we're not welcome, then say so. I'd rather patronize a Black owned business, OR in the absence of one in the North area, I will drive back to my old neighborhood to support the Asian man who treats his customers like human beings.

They obviously did not want my money.I went here today on recommendation of my hair stylist to look for clip in extensions for an event. When I asked the man behind the counter for help, his first words "I don't have anything for your hair color." But he did go and look through a box behind the counter and pulled out two packages, that were really not my hair color. When I asked if he had partials in my color, he said no. LOL. So this whole shop does not have ANYTHiNg in my hair color? So I started looking at whole wigs in what looked like the "real hair" section, but none of them had prices. Since the man and woman behind the counter were busy doing ???, I never found out how much they were. Why did not ask? I did, and they both completely ignored my me while tippling away on a calculator. Guess they made their quota for the day already.

I only came here because my regular hair store is closed on sundays, I usually try to stay away from non-black owned hair stores that don't employee black people. The organization of this place makes zero sense, they have crochet hair next to bulk hair, there's no consistency between the styles. I prefer natural-colored braids but those were few and far between and even if they did have them they're not organized by color. They keep locks at the end of every hook thing that the hair hangs on, so I would have to ask someone to riffle through all the packages of hair to find my color. And while I was there, there were only two staff persons and maybe six customersI know the locks are a theft deterrent but theft can be curbed by hiring more staff instead of showing the neighborhood that you openly distrust them. I left without buying anything, I'll schlep my way to King's Beauty Supply next time I need something on Sunday.

Pros: Lots of different products I don't see at other BSS in Sacramento. The women were helpful.Cons: Everything was locked down. Like, you cannot just grab a pack of hair and go to the counter and pay. An employee has to unlock the bar for you to get it. The packs of hair have security locks on them so you cannot open them up and feel the hair. Most of the eyelash products are behind a counter. No Bueno. I will stick with some of the other BSSs around the area.

Avoid this establishment. I have been shopping at James for a few years, and while it was satisfactory before, recent experiences have been disappointing. I frequently purchased braiding hair from this store, which always had clearly marked prices. However, during my latest visit, I noticed that none of the items on the lower back wall were priced as usual. When I asked the boy behind the counter about the missing prices, he claimed they were never priced, which is untrue based on my four-year experience as a customer. I questioned how customers are supposed to know the prices, and he responded that the workers would inform them at checkout. I explained that I needed to compare prices before reaching the register to find the best deal. He became loud and started ranting that he didn't own the place and wasn't responsible for the pricing.I pointed out that this new practice is misleading, as they could arbitrarily assign prices at checkout. Frustrated, I left my items on the counter and decided to shop elsewhere. As I was leaving, a younger boy shouted something very rude.

I used to frequent this location for all my hair needs. It definitely won't be anymore. I purchased some crochet hair and called the store to see if I could come and exchange for a different style. Was told yes. Upon my arrival they had a sign on the door saying be back in 30 minutes. Keep in mind I called them just 5-6 minutes before arriving as I was down the street at my hair appointment. 30 minutes from when? Stupid sign! I ended up having to get a completely different style as I had to buy braiding hair at a store close to the salon that didn't have what I needed. I stopped by the store a 2nd time after my hair appointment and let them know I needed a refund because of me having to go with a style I really didn't want. They informed me "No Refunds" WTF! You told me to come and exchange and had a sign saying back in 30 minutes. The employee said, you should have waited. I then said I had a hair appointment and had to leave to do the exchange. To make a long story short they suck!

Very rude and disrespectful his daughter was helping me and comes being very rude saying people snatch stuff and run out wtf does that have to do with me comparing hair. If it was on a mannequin you would not have to worry about that. I come in to theses stores I'm so sick of these rude ass ppl owning beauty supply stores your theft issue is within the area u decide to open your store. That does not give you the right to treat all customers in that manner. I am a very frequent buyer I will no longer go to his store ever again. I told him he was rude for his statement of saying you ppl he says it's not rude and says bye I said you have a blessed day. Honestly he won't get far with his unprofessional business like conduct I work and do hair I am highly offended. I hop

Yelp just reminded me that I started this review years ago and never finished it, so I'm posting it now with the addition of my suggestion for an alternative beauty supply store (Black owned). I came into this store one time and that was enough. I very rarely get my hair braided for three reasons, 1) it takes too much time to have my hair braided 2) It takes too much time to take them out 3) I have had too many bad (racist) experiences with Asian owned hair supply stores that target the very demographic they hate, Black people. I can't really do anything to change reasons 1 and 2, but I don't have to accept reason 3. This place was no exception. The man at the counter offered no greeting--just rung up my braiding hair, said the price, took my money and then dropped my change on the counter instead of my open hand letting me know that he did not want to risk his skin touching my skin. Of course, there was no thank you or anything. I do not make a habit of spending my hard earned money with racists and/or people who treat me rudely. Even though I have experienced this type of treatment at these type of stores throughout the years, I will try new places every now and again, but I am usually disappointed to find out that this is pretty standard at these shops. I can't completely blame them, though, because Black people have to stop letting them think it's okay to treat us like this and the only way they will ever learn is too stop spending money with businesses that are blatantly racist towards the very people they are making money from. One person wrote that the owners were rude until she started bringing her clients into the store and getting them business. She said she would recommend her clients to that store only if she is with them. Look, if you have to jump through hoops for a store owner to treat you like a human being, that probably isn't a store you should be spending your money in. It's sad that Black person after Black person has had these experiences and Black people still patronize it.Try Nubian Family Beauty Supply, it's Black owned and my experiences have been great there. Don't beg people to treat you with value.
