I have been coming to Icing on the cupcake for years, but not as often lately since I don't get to come to midtown as often as I used to. Although cupcakes aren't the trendy 'viral' sweet that they were about 8 years ago, I'm happy to report that these cupcakes continue to be delicious and worth a visit. I've always been impressed with the flavor and quality of their gluten free items. I tried the gf candy cane and also picked up my favorite gf brown butter coffee cake cupcake. Both were good and the brown butter continues to be my favorite. They offer gluten free and vegan options along with standard cupcakes. The person who helped me was super sweet and made the experience even better. They have flavors they offer daily as well flavors that change depending on the day of the week so check their site if there is a certain flavor you want. My top recs are the brown butter, snickerdoodle, peanut butter and jelly, and the lemon.

This place hands down has some of the best cupcakes in Sacramento! Their flavors are incredible, the cupcakes are always moist, and the frosting is absolutely delicious. It's a small shop with limited seating, but honestly, the quality of the cupcakes makes up for it. Pucker up is my favorite but I am not a fan of lemon filling so I prefer to get the mini ones. I can eat a dozen of the mini ones (we listen, we don't judge). That being said, the biggest downside is how quickly they run out. I went on a Saturday around 5:45 PM, expecting to get cupcakes for dessert since their posted hours says they're open until 8 PM. But when I got there, the door was locked, and a sign said they were out of cupcakes. It was clear they had been out for a while since everything was already cleaned up and packed away. I get that they're popular, but running out so early, especially on a weekend, is really frustrating. If you're planning to visit, I highly recommend calling ahead to make sure they actually have cupcakes available. It's disappointing to drive all the way there only to leave empty-handed during posted business hours. I really think management should work on improving inventory, especially on busy days like Saturdays. It's a shame to lose business this way because their cupcakes are good. I'd still recommend this spot for the quality alone, but just be prepared for the possibility that they might sell out early.

Pretty cupcakes in a variety of flavors that vary by day. I had the following: Pucker Up, Butter-Finger-Licious, Marvelous Marble and Cherry Lime Hibiscus. I personally liked the chocolate ones most (Butter-Finger-Licious & Marvelous Marble).Located in midtown, parking can be a little difficult to find. Service is average. Not really what you want at a small place selling sweets. (I'd expect happier, more upbeat service.)The price is a bit steep at over $4/cupcake, so if you're not a huge sweet lover, it won't be worth it. I see it as a once in a while treat, not something I'd get super frequently. Definitely can see these cupcakes being a hit at a party though!

Haven't been here in a while...actually it's been since they moved from Alhambra street.Nonetheless, the ambiance is clean and customer service was basic. The cupcakes are still delicious. Although they serve a variety of cupcakes, I typically come for the pb&j cupcakes. They're unique treat and a peanut butter lover's dream.

I stopped by the J Street location for a Too Good to Go pickup. Too Good to Go offers customers a surprise bag with at least 4 cupcakes of the store's choice for a reduced price (nearly 75% off). I didn't have much variety, as my box came with two Rocky Road and two Vegan Chocolate Turtle cupcakes. Both were delicious, but I prefer the non-Vegan ones since they weren't as dry. I arrived to pickup on a Friday afternoon, and I was greeted by friendly staff and a case full of fresh cupcakes. Staff asked if I had any allergies before giving me a box with nuts. I appreciated the consideration, which made their customer service stand out. The store is small; however, it's connected to Chicago Pizza. Given the shared space, you can order cupcakes from next door and have them brought over. I would love to come back for pizza and cupcakes of my choice next time! Overall, great first experience.

$4/cupcake...not the cheapest but decadent and delicious. All the flavors are good. I was only able to try one but every guest who tried the other flavors gave it rave reviews.I really liked the cake, filling, and frosting on top of their cupcakes. Clean bakery and friendly service. Would definitely order again for parties if I'm in the area.

Got a small box of 4 cupcakes to share and they were lemon, s'more, coconut, and vanilla over chocolate. The lemon one had a creamy custard center and the marshmallow topping somehow did taste toasted! No pictures because the kids ate it all before I could take one

At first I didn't even see this place.. kind of easy to miss if you're not specifically searching for it. It's located in a brick building next to a place who's sign is more prominent; and makes you think that it's one business instead of two. Inside is very cute. Service was very pleasant with a quick and easy transaction.Cupcakes are pretty basic to me. Not bad, but not something I would gift to someone else. With all of the bake shops in the city, I'm not sure if I would come back. What I do like is that their frosting isn't a heaping mound on top and it isn't overall too sweet where you can't enjoy them.

Fresh, delicious, and super tasty cupcakes. And often they have at least 2 kinds of filled cupcakes (our favorite). And their cookie sandwiches are fantabulous. So happy to have them in Midtown.
