Bawk! by Urban Roots

Friends and I had a hankering for chicken sandwiches so we came to check out Bawk! by Urban Roots. They are located right next to Ace of Spades! They have outdoor and indoor seating but it is first come first serve. You order at the counter, pay, grab a number, and they bring the food when it's ready. The food was delicious. It was definitely better than I expected! I was thinking it would small bites but they had full on meals! I got chicken and butter milk cornbread waffles, it came with three juicy chicken wings. The chicken was pipping hot and really well seasoned. I got maple hot spice level because I like sweet with a kick but not super spicy. We also tried chicken dishes with the Nashville and Buffalo spice level and all were not that spicy! Everything was super delicious and I would definitely come back here.

Our first time eating at BAWK! We ordered a little of everything... Burger, Fried Chicken Sandwich, Chicken Tacos, Oysters, Fried Cauliflower Bites, Mac & Cheese, Chicken Strips... Staff were nice, Chef Dennis was great, brought our food to the table. This is an order first and then sit establishment. Chill vibe to go have a drink, eat, have some good conversation. Within the restaurant is the Speakeasy, where I have been once. Cool experience.

My family and I checked out Bawk! last night for dinner for the first time!They offer happy hour from 4-6pm so we ordered the Chicken Wings, Cauli Bites, Loaded Mac and the Kids Chicken Tenders with Fries. The food took a bit longer than I anticipated to come out, but it was all hot when it arrived. I really liked the Cauli Bites -- the batter was nice and crispy and had a hint of spice as well. The Loaded Mac had some good flavors too, but the Chicken Wings were just okay. The Chicken Tenders were actually a pleasant surprise as well. I'm not sure if they make their own hot sauce in house or not, but it mostly just tasted like any bottled one you'd get at the store. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you - which is fine, but when our food was brought to our table, we asked if we could have some silverware and the guy said "yes, they are over there" and had us get our own. I just thought it was weird that they didn't give us some with our food and instead we had to get up and walk across the restaurant to get them ourselves -- water is also a self-serve thing too.Staff was fine, nothing stood out. They only come over and ask if they can clear your plates. The inside is split into 2 rooms with booths on one side and the bar area with shared tables on the other - it's definitely has a dive bar feel to it as well. The Roost speakeasy is also located inside as well - which I highly recommend! Not sure if I'll be back to Bawk! though as I wasn't too impressed, but maybe we just ordered the wrong items.

Food was great and got to meet the chef! Our party ordered the bawk basket, catfish, wings and chicken waffles. The food was seasoned right and not bland at all. The only bad part was that we had to have them cook the wings that came with the chicken and waffles a little bit longer and it took them more than an hour to get back to us. We had to go in the Roost (speakeasy) and were impressed with the ambiance. The drinks were ok but the whole experience was great!

Last minute decision / randomly stumbled upon Bawk! and I'm glad we did and got to try it out. It's located on the same strip as Ace of Spades and there's street parking and a paid parking lot across the street. We got some raw & grilled oysters and it was either what they call their chicken nuggets or chicken strips. I forgot but it was delicious - tender, flavorful, and juicy. The oysters were tasty as well. Friendly staff, yummy food, and great vibes. Would come back and check out their other items.

Bawk gives all the good vibes. The staff is super welcoming and friendly. I love the casual convenience option to order at the counter. (Great for groups! No need to do bill splitting at the table) The food is just as good as the ambiance. I ordered the chicken & waffles and it did not disappoint! My husband ordered a fried chicken sandwich. The sandwich was well seasoned and crispy; just how we like it. I also love the late hours. We will be back soon!

From the service to the food everything about Bawk screams cream of the crop. I had one of the best fried chicken sandwiches today. The batter was perfect, the chicken thigh was juicy and cooked just right. The slaw and pickles were a great touch on it as well. Went with the Nashville hot flavor. It was spicy but still enjoyable. By the end of the sandwich the heat was picking up. The speakers were playing some older Kendrick Lamar which was fitting since the day before Drake was playing 'tough guy' as the Sacramento Kings and DeMar DeRozan were in Toronto. Very fitting music choice! This place is tuned in to the culture. The food here is a great representation of that and I can't wait to go back and try more of their menu.

Service was good and the food was as well . Will definitely go back to try something different

OMW This Black owned chicken spot is a Crispy, Well Seasoned, lesson in all the Fried Chicken!After an afternoon of tree hugging in the Desert Botanical Garden(Yes, it's a real thing) we stumbled upon this chicken spot located near the capital in Sacramento. Graffiti laden walls, black booths, and great music welcome you into a space that is a perfect mesh between chicken Shack and eclectic bar. Best of all, the food matches the energy!Bawk! Offers an array of chicken heavy options. From all things chicken, fried, sandwiched, salad, oysters and cauliflower bits(to break it up a little bit) peppered with classic southern side dishes. The best part, is that it is all done very well, with great service to round the experience out.Mr. Barnyard pimp ordered the party wings in Lemon pepper, with a side of collard greens and a chicken taco(He couldn't resist) The wings were a whirlwind of flavor and arrived freshly fried and pipping hot! The wings were also a surprisingly nice sized, seeing how we had arrived during their Happy Hour! This is a great way to keep business flowing during the lulling hours of 2 to 5! The collard greens were tender, juicy, and overflowing with Chunks of smoked turkey meat(seriously, we almost picked the bowl clean)!Your favorite Culled Hen, ordered the Bawk Bites. Dark meat bites tossed in a flavor of your choice. You know I live Spicy before the Lord, and got my bites tossed in their Nashville Hot sauce! When I tell you, these "bites" were more like juicy chin dripping, quartered chicken thighs! They were everything!!!! Crispy on the outside, Smothered in a sweet, spicy sauce that builds in intensity with each voluptuous bite! Served along fluffy waffle fries and a slice of white bread to suck it all up!!! Plus, the portions were so big, it didn't leave us any room to delve into there Big Back Desserts! My heart hurtIf you live in the Sacramento area and have not visited this gem; shame on you! If you every have the opportunity to visit, don't cheat yourself.CHECK IT OUT!

Food and service was fantastic. I messed up on my order and didn't ask for thigh meat other wise I think the food would have been much better in my eyes. I got the buffalo chicken sandwich. Spice level was mild IMO, but I can take a decent amount of heat.Ambience was great!! They have a modern industrial feel. They brought out the food within 15 minutes and obliged my requests for ranch and extra aioli!!
