Tempe House Spicy Food

This place has my favorite Indonesian vegan options. I am Indonesian and it is hard to find vegan Indonesian options since most Indonesians cook with trasi or fermented shrimps. This place is owned and run by a Seventh Day Adventist who doesn't eat shellfish. Thus lots of their dishes are vegan!!!The taste is pretty authentic and spicy. Thus the name of the place is Tempeh House Spicy Food! Tempeh is Indonesian origin. I grew up eating tempeh and love tempeh before becoming a vegan and before tempeh is popular among vegans.My favorite vegan dishes from here are kale curry, Spicy Tempeh Stir Fry, Sayur Lodeh, Sambal Goreng Tempeh, Nasi Kuning, Ketoprak, Steamed Spiced Tofu in Banana Leaves, Fried Tempeh, Fried, Tofu, Es Cendol, emping, garlic krupuk, and tofu in soy sauce. Many! The dishes mostly served on a steam table. Ask which dishes are vegetarians with no eggs or vegans.The only thing is the place is not fancy. It is kind of a hole in the wall kind of place. It sits on a funky small strip mall in an industrial area by the airport. I don't mind eating in this kind of establishment but I don't bring certain friends here. Ha ha. I usually come with my brother and my husband, just families. However the price is realiy good and the portion is HUGE! The taste is yummmmy. Thus I keep coming back although it takes an hour to get there. That says it all!!!

Insanely delicious tempe! My partner and I were out in SB County on our way to a concert at Yaamava. We were really in the mood for spicy food so I took to Yelp to see our vegan options. I stumbled across this place and my partner was excited to try as we have Indonesian food regularly. It was located in a typical SB strip mall. We walked in and it was similar to any hot food counter. We chose a two item combo with coconut rice. The lady behind the counter kindly let us know which options were vegan and which items were vegetarian (eggs). We went with two vegan soybean tofu tempe options. One that she recommended would be a little spicier. The portions were loaded! We had enough for leftovers. The kerupuk chips were a nice, crunchy treat. The prices were extremely affordable. We took the food to go as we wanted to get to our concert on time, so we had our combo at the casino. The food was amazing. It was spicy, flavorful, mouthwatering goodness. The coconut rice made for a great pairing. We had half of the combo before our concert then ate the other half after the show. It was really appetizing. We felt good after eating it which is always a plus. Nothing was ridiculously heavy or overwhelming, it was just pure bliss. Overall, highly recommend. Absolutely worth a try, especially if you have never tried Indonesian food. Solid vegan options with knowledgeable staff. I will be back for more whenever I am in the area.

If I could leave a 10 star review I would! This was the best tempe i've ever had. I ordered the Spicy Tempe and the Tofu Tempe and both were phenomenal with the coconut rice. I wish I could have this restaurant next door to me, but I will not be moving to the shady area it's located in. As a vegan the lady behind the counter did an excellent job describing each dish that's plant based and pointed out the difference between vegetarian and vegan options. I ordered a 2 item combo and I got a box that physically could not close because it was so full. For $11 I got the best meals of my life and I will never hesitate to eat here again.

Stopped here on a road trip and pleasantly surprised how much food you get, great value!! Food was tasty and was enough to feed me for 2.5 meals. Definitely would go back if I was in the area. Service and staff are straight to the point.

They have amazingly tasty food and great service! I recommend this place. It's like a side road stall in Central Java.

Cheap. Hold in the wall perfect for my quick lunch 6 mins drive from work. Meat are not Halal but has a lot of vegan choices. You'll see me here often

The food here is very good, with rich flavors that make each dish enjoyable. However, my experience was somewhat marred by the customer service. I received an attitude when ordering, as I'm unfamiliar with Tempe food and was hoping to try something new. The staff's response to my questions was less than welcoming, which negatively impacted my visit.Additionally, the cleanliness of the establishment was a concern. The space felt crowded and cluttered, with noticeable grease stains in the kitchen area. It's also important to note that the restaurant holds a B rating, indicating that there may be some areas needing improvement in terms of cleanliness and maintenance.While the food itself was tasty, the service and environment could use some attention to ensure a more enjoyable dining experience.

One of my favorite restaurants in the entire state. If you're veg, this place is a no-brainer. I can't recommend the spicy tempeh and the potato dish enough. Oh my god. It is so freaking good. I routinely drive 1+ hours to get this. The workers are "authentic" and friendly. It's in kind of a sketch little area, which brings it charm to me - but others might call unnerving. Still my favorite place in the IE.

Their food is super flavorful, and they give very generous portions. The staff is always so nice! Lots of vegan and gluten free options. We love the fired Tempe, the spicy Tempe dish, spicy potatoes, and eggplant + tofu dishes.
