Rice Or Death

Rice is lifeeee, baby! It really is I decided to try Rice or Death since their food truck was part of the Curbside Bites in Downtown San Diego. I originally wanted to try their Stay Gold, which had chicken karaage, but they were out of karaage by the time I ordered. So I opted for the Perfect Meal Always (PMA) with longanisa as my protein and the Shrimpers Delight!I loved the smokiness of the PMA and the longanisa was perfect with it. You have to add the Rocket Sauce, which is their sweet & spicy sauce, because it took it to a whole other level The Shrimpers Delight was good too! You should definitely add the Rocket Sauce to this one as well. The shrimps were actual good sizes and there was a good amount of it unlike other places that barely give you any for the extra price you pay. I got the 20 oz. for each and I still had enough leftover to share it with my man for dinner! He's a true rice lover and he approved of Rice or Death!I work right beside where the food trucks are stationed, so I will try and take a lunch earlier to make sure I get to try the Stay Gold one next time!

Dude!  You gotta' try Rice or Death!  Seriously!Becky works downtown and every Wednesday at India St. and West B the streets are partially blocked off for Curbside Bites, a collection of food trucks.Becky had been eyeballin' the Rice or Death truck.  On occasion she would see a coworker enjoying the food, then raving about it.She finally treated herself - and me, she ordered the 32 oz - to this fabulous creation.  Bex chose the Perfect Meal Anytime (PMA) bowl with their house blend white rice.  For the protein she opted for the Portuguese sausage.  The other ingredients making up the flavor train party in your mouth were green beans, garlic, onion, butter, salt & pepper, housemade Go-Go Shoyu sauce and scrambled eggs.   She also received a couple of containers of "Rocket sauce" on the side. She absolutely loved the rice.  She sent a text to me singing its praises with the promise that I would get the leftovers for dinner.  Dinner could not arrive soon enough.Finally - dinner time!  I scooped some of the rice into a bowl and popped it into the microwave, or as I like to call it, the food ruiner.  Despite it being nuked, this rice could not be ruined.  Screw you microwave!  Rice wins!It was fantastic.  The flavors all melded together in perfect bliss.  The Portuguese sausage was packed with flavor and they did not scrimp on it.  There was sausage in just about every bite.  The Rocket sauce was a wonderful additive and packed quite a punch.  If you have an aversion to spicy, go easy on the Rocket. I paired my rice with some leftover Sweet Chili Garlic wings from Karl Strauss (that's another review).  It was an excellent combination, but truth be told, the rice would have been perfect by itself.  The 32 oz. container was plenty for Becky's lunch, two dinners for me and a little snack.It was damn good.  I cannot wait for next Wednesday.  Rice or Death has several different bowls to choose to from.  Maybe Shrimpers Delight next time!

A friend of mine told me I had to check out Rice or Death. Found their Facebook page and was able to see where they would be located because it's a food truck. They posted they would be in front of Chop Suey, which was my go to Chinese restaurant until the owners retired and they closed. Luckily, I had a four day weekend so why not celebrate and try something new and fun while celebrating the Lunar New Year of the Ox!Since they were in North Park today, parking would be a challenge since many don't follow Covid protocols, except for masks. There was only one order before me. They offer two sizes: 20 oz and 32 oz. I took the 32 since I was sharing. There are a number of choices, but I ordered:#1 Rice Above - breakfast rice with eggs, bacon, sausage, and some crispy hash brown potatoes...very good!#2 Punk Rice Cowboy - skirt steak, corn, cilantro, and tomatoes. This reminded me of Spanish rice with a nice subtle spicy kick! Sooooo good!#4 Shrimpers Delight - battered fried shrimp tossed with eggs and red bell peppers! Ooooh soooo good!!#7 Seoul Inferno - pork bulgogi and kimchi! I asked for brown rice with this one. Delicious! Great spicy flavor without overpowering it all! Hot damn...soooooooo good!#8 Stay Gold - karaage fried chicken, carrots, and furikake seasoning! This was my overall favorite because it was just so dang tasty!Granted, I asked the friendly young woman which rice should I use and she recommended white and I have to agree. I used brown for #7 since the spice would infuse nicely. What is amazing about each of them is that they each have their own unique flavors. Their signature sauces were given, but I didn't need to use them. Although, I believe the rocket sauce will add more heat!My only expertise is that I'm Chinese, and I've had my share of fried rice. These are all really, really good! I can't wait to try some of the others, and I just realized writing this, that I didn't get the rice krispie treats!!! I spoke to two of the owners and this was their 7th outing. Very impressive!Definitely worth finding! And it's been awhile since I've been the first Yelper!

The rice here is life changing! Service is always great! My husband and I follow the truck around like stalkers. A must try

Yooooooo!!!! I was so excited to try the fried rice from this food truck today when I saw they were one of the vendors at the YMCASD Freestyle Block Party at the Jackie Robinson Y. I got the #10. It had egg mixed in with kaarage on top and furikaki, and some sauce that made me want to slap somebody!Y'all!! When I say this fried rice was on point!!! You don't understand! It was garlicky and had umami depth. The kaarage was piled on top. It was crispy and seasoned perfectly. Don't sleep!! Follow them on Instagram and find this truck! You will not regret it!Thank you so much for coming out and representing with us at the Y today. Regards to the chef!You did that!! It was bangin'!!!

Just ate the Rice Above for breakfast. Added a fried egg and kimichi. Yo! So Delicious! Love this idea of a fried rice food truck! I can't wait to try all of the menu items!

Found this food truck when I was at some kollective food market in Miramar. Their specialty is fried rice and I noticed they offered cauliflower rice as another option which caught my eye. I got their Rice Above option and ordered their 10 oz. When I had the first bite I was so amazed how it tasted like actual rice, since most of the times I can tell it's cauliflower. The spices and everything were delicious and those crispy gold hash browns on top were perfect for that crunch. I loved my meal here and would definitely get it again the next time I catch the truck!

A few friends told me I should try this place, so I went down and tried it. Ordered the shrimpers delight with bacon and every bite had bacon bits and great flavor. Lots of shrimp too. I thought it was great fried rice. It's not your typical Asian fried rice, so if you're expecting those flavors, go elsewhere. It's a Guam style fried rice, which basically says "throw in whatever was last nights dinner with garlic, onions, and butter and mix it with rice". I ordered the 20oz because the 32oz seemed excessive. The 20oz is more than enough. Great job guys!

Everything I have tried here has been fantastic. I have tried the PMA, the sweet Dub and the cowboy one and all of them are great. I love how I can be super healthy and get cauliflower rice if I'm really in a mood or just get a meal with regular rice. Throw a egg on there and it's a perfect meal. Overall if you haven't tried them you should.

A couple of coworkers and went to Rice or Death a few months back for our first time ever. And the food was amazing. I ordered the Shrimpers Delight with a fried egg and did not regret it. And since that day my coworkers and I were craving Rice or Death. Well today we did online order pick up. I received a text message from Dom (the owner) saying they had ran out of avocado and if I wanted to substitute it for any other topping which I did. Fast forward to us picking the food, I got caught up in work and one of my colleagues offered to grab me my food. When they returned I realized I had the wrong order. I was hesitant to text the number to let them know, but I did. I immediately got a text message back from Dominic expressing how sorry he was about the mix up and offered to refund me my order and that my next order would be free. I was surprised at how fast they got back to me and was super thankful for their customer service. The food at this truck is amazing and then for them to have excellent customer service. 10/10 would recommend and come back for more delicious food and to support a business where they care for their customers!! Thank you!
