The Red Gem is similar old-fashioned Korean-Chinese food taste I get at Orange County, CA. I'm just traveling through town. It's hard to find good old-fashion Korean-Chinese food when you're traveling. If you're from Orange County, CA, you know the spot in Garden Grove. The Red Gem had a similar vibe. Jjam Ppong's spicy level was good and seafood flavor was much better here compared to home. I think you can typically ask to raise the spicy level. The service could be better but it's typical for Korean place. When I walked in, the lady asked me what I wanted to order. No menu was was offered. I would've got more food but I get it. I'm a solo eater so she assumed I'm ordering the routine food. Jjajang or Jjamppong both popular dish. I would come again if I'm ever in town again.

JJjamppong (Korean: 짬뽕; Hanja: 攙烹) is a Chinese-style Korean noodle soup with red, spicy seafood- or pork-based broth flavored with gochugaru (chili powder) And this place does it RIGHT. I felt my Korean genes activate, I wasn't even hungry, but I ended up scarfing it all down in no time.

This is definitely a hidden gem on south tacoma way for asian food. Although my family has been coming here for years, the food stays pretty consistently delicious.Their spin on General Tso's chicken is top notch! Always crispy and full of flavor. My mom will only come here for her seafood jjampong and the sweet and sour pork is also divine.I would have given it another star but the service here is also consistent, but consistently bad. No, they're not rude or anything but they are very indifferent. If you need something after you've initially ordered, expect to get up and look for the server each time yourself because they never come to ask.In a nutshell, the food is fantastic but maybe just consider ordering it for take out.

I want to give Red Gem 4 stars but I'll give it 3, in the most loving way possible. There isn't anything bad/wrong about this restaurant. If you're looking for decent Korean-Chinese food in the area, this would probably be my go-to. Everything tasted good, just wasn't mind blowing, which is fine! The tangsuyuk was hot and crispy and hit the spot. My family came from Bellevue to Tacoma for jajangmyeon and I thought it was just okay. Nothing too special about the jajangmyeon. I personally ordered the jjamppong/jajangmyeon half and half and thought the jjamppong soup was too much, I think it needed to have more water because the taste was pretty overwhelming.

The Good: hands down the best jjambbong around. This is a Korean Chinese place which is different than a typical Chinese restaurant catering to Americans. If you're in the mood for Korean. Chinese food, this is a good place the Korean Chinese food is above average. Their jjambbong is crazy good. Their family meals are a steal. Good food for a great price. Not so Good: service is slow. They have one server for the entire restaurant. That's okay when the restaurant is slow. But crazy when it's busy. Also, I'm pretty sure they have one person cooking so if the restaurant is busy it can take a LONG time to get your food. But once you do, you'll be happy you waited

Service sucks. Food is OK, but jjangmyeon and the spicy seafood soup is probably the most popular there and close to authentic.

The best Mapo tofu. I can eat it every day. Better than my grandfather's. I love the extras that you get with your meal. Discovered this Gem on Doordash during the pandemic & boy am I happy. They have me hooked.

Went in for lunch the other day and ordered one of the lunch specials - broccoli and beef. Wow! what a mistake. The broccoli and rice were okay, but every piece of beef that I ate was like chewing a mouth full of rubber bands. The meat quality was a big ZERO. It was so bad, that I asked the waitress to take it away and explained that I could not finish the meal because chewing the meat was like chewing a mouth full of rubber bands. Will not dine there again.
