I frequent this place quite often when craving sushi. The quality of fish is always fresh and consistent as is the service. This is a safe option as I know it never disappoints.

After driving my daughter the days after her surgery around town, we really wanted to wind down on a Friday night and enjoy a seafood dinner at Jacqueline in Portland's Clinton area. But, we didn't have a res., it was a 45 min. and, we were hungry. Without walking too far, we noticed Yama. No res, 10 min wait, seated. Bam! After you walk past all the folded napkins by the waiting area, Yama Sushi & Izakaya opens up to a dining area with neutral color walls, dark woods, some black touches and paper lanterns. My daughter started with 'Salmon Butter' that had 2 salmon chunks, asparagus, sautéed enoki and the tastiest spinach. The plate was delicate from start to finish. My Miso Cod was another highlight with the most tender fish and wish I had another piece. My kid had a Lobster-topped roll that was feast on the eyes. She enjoyed it, but I would've gone for the no-mayo on it. My Rainbow Roll with real crab was every bit satisfying. The succulent, velvety fish was a nice contrast with the crunchy cucumber, the creamy avocado and that real chunky crab. The rice is seasoned nicely with the right touch of sweetness and acid. Except, the rolls here have a lot of rice. Don't let that stop you- there are other selling points in the menu.

I came here for date night. Service was great! The servers were very attentive and came around several times making sure we had everything we needed.I'm a huge fan of scallops, a huge fan of pepper salted anything, so the popcorn scallops are naturally a hit. Warning, they come out scalding hot so refrain from popping them immediately in your mouth. I burnt my mouth pretty badly, but I would do it again. The chicken karaage is pretty standard. The volcano roll was more on the sweet side from the unagi sauce. The crazy boy roll had pickled jalapeños in it and I really enjoyed it! It was tangy and had a kick to it. The Kobe roll is another one that was very different. You can taste the smokiness on the meat. It melted in your mouth. Absolutely delicious and the last two rolls were so unique. 100% I recommend everyone try it. I would definitely go back. Everything was delicious. It makes me feel like I need to venture out from my usuals. I like what I like, but there are new gems out there to try.

The host was great and attentive. They even got us seated faster than I had anticipated because it was a full house. Momoyama is my favorite sushi restaurant in Portland and I did not know that this was their cheaper/sister restaurant. For what it's worth, it 's still good. I believe the rolls selection here is much wider, but nothing beats Momoyama in my opinion. I ordered multiple rolls and nigiris and they just didn't seem to be on par with Momoyama. I would definitely come back as this is a cheaper alternative to my sushi cravings. The place is very open and busy. It's a little loud as well, but not from any music or anything - they were just super busy and had tons of people in attendance.

My friend chose to go here for her birthday. By the time she decided where she wanted to go, it was too late to make a reservation. So we walked in were told the wait would be 45 minutes. Not to bad for a weekend, so we said ok & got a text when our table was ready.I had been craving sushi for a while now, so I was so happy to see a bunch on the menu. Got a few simple rolls & takoyaki & oh did it hit the spot. The batter was a bit heavy on the takoyaki, but it was still really good. Loved the sauce on it! I did think it was odd though that 2 of our ramens came out really quick, but we waited at least 15 minutes for the last one. We thought they forgot, but it did come out. Other then that, service was great.

For being #68 on the Yelp 100 list, I have to say I am a bit disappointed. Here's what we had:Hokkaido Scallop Carpaccio - tasted like it had been sitting in the fridgeGrilled Octopus - the octopus was tender and flavorfulKobe Saikoro Steak - dry, dry, drySalmon Skin Salad - worth getting and eatingNasu Dengaku (miso glazed eggplant) - worth gettingNegi-Toro Roll - tastes okWhite Fish Carpaccio - tastes ok, well presentedFor a Sunday, there was minimal wait to be seated at the bar. When our server suggested the bar, I had this vision that I would be able to talk with the chef behind the counter and ask him to make me whatever he wanted, but not only did "the guy" behind the counter fail to greet me (he must not be Japanese), he didn't make eye contact or say anything to me during my entire dinner. What kind of sushi bar is this? In fact, no one was overly friendly.

This was a choice for us during our visit to Portland based on it being in the Yelp top 100 list. I would have to say that the ambience, service, speed, certainly rate the accolade. The food is top notch Japanese ... for Portland. However, I am from the SF Bay Area, so this seems merely good to me, not superior. That sounds more negative than it is meant to be, but nonetheless this place would still stand out for innovative presentation, but the dishes themselves would be just "solid" in, say, Burlingame or SF. That said, there are a few things that really stand out, and I once again believe this is the high water mark of J-food in PDX:I really liked the Salmon Skin salad. Crunchy and generous amounts of salmon skin, nicely seasoned, with radish sprouts and other greens. Great!Grilled Octopus - very good. Tender and nicely presented. Great!Miso Glazed Nasubi - tender and nicely seasoned. Expensive for two Nasubi! Very good.Kobe Saikoku - Steak bits. Seems too lean for what it is supposed to be - that is, tastes like lean siring not Kobe beef. So, I was a bit disappointed despite the nice presentation on the hot griddle. The meat was tender and well trimmed, but it just doesn't have that buttery taste that I would expect from actual "Kobe" beef. Scallop Carpaccio - It was just OK. Seemed a bit over-cured (pickled). not a disaster, but also not the "melt in your mouth" that had been reviewed by others. So, just OK to good for me. YMMV.Whitefish carpaccio - Kind of like the Scallops. The fish were fresh, but I'd say the oil and vinegar was too much for this mild fish. Just OK for me. YMMV.Negi Toro Rolls - These were decent. Nice tuna, Well rolled. So, I'd say "good". Not a lot of interesting other flavor. Since it was good tuna, I'd probably just get the sashimi. So, if you are getting sushi in Portland or want to go for other Japanese food, I think this is your place. If you are from a place like SFO, you are not going to think this is so exceptional, but it's gonna be still OK to good. That said, if you are from a hotbed of J-food I think the more exceptional choices are some of the highly rated WP food places in the area. Portland is much more cosmopolitan than when I grew up here (this was a 50 year HS reunion trip for me) but it's still not SF for Asian food, IMO. I'd embrace my inner WP and go for those biscuits and chicken somewhere.

My parents were visiting and requested sushi. My friend helped me set up a private table upstairs for our large group. I requested a set menu based on chef recommendation and nothing disappointed! There are more dishes/ pics to add but Yelp limited it to 10. Everything was delicious, tasted fresh, & came out quickly. My parents said it was some of the best sushi, especially with presentation. Thank you Jay & team for a memorable dinner, especially with my parents.
