Thien Hong is one of the restaurants that I frequented with my family when I was growing up in the Portland area. I remember their salt and pepper squid was so delicious that we always had to order two plates. We used to joke that the salt was actually cocaine because it was so addicting.I moved away more than a decade ago, but on my most recent trip back, I wanted a taste of nostalgia again. The decor hasn't changed a bit.We ordered a spread of snow pea leaves, crispy chow mein, a few dim sum pieces, walnut shrimp, and of course, their signature dish, the salt and pepper squid. The fried squid pieces were pretty small. I remember the squid pieces being a lot larger a long time ago, but the flavor is relatively the same and is still good. I think this dish is the thing that keeps people coming back, but otherwise, their other dishes are pretty average in comparison to other Cantonese restaurants that you can go to in the Portland area.Thien Hong is worth a visit if you want to try salt and pepper squid that can't be replicated anywhere else.

I never went here before, so I can't speak to whether the salted pepper squid got worse or whatever. What I can say is that the salted pepper squid is delicious! I didn't know squid could taste so good. Also, for what it's worth, my fiancée has gone here since she was a kid and can't really tell the difference. I also got the sweet n sour chicken and that was also very good (but can't really compare to the squid!)The service was great too. The staff is so polite and helpful. The service was also super fast for us and food came out very timely. I also appreciate they serve tea with everything and also boxed our food for us.

No frills here, and that's alright by me. Everytime you go, you HAVE to have the pepper salted squid if nothing else! We usually get vibes brocalli in garlic & oyster sauce & a bowl of rice, that's all you need! The PSS- IS ADDICTIVE, so don't say that I didn't warn you!

Had a great experience here! Even with our large group of 14, the service was impressively fast--we got our food within 10-15 minutes. The food was fantastic, and the sweet and sour catfish soup stood out as my favorite. We had tofu enoki, salted pepper and squid, honey walnut shrimp, and a couple of noodle dishes and almost everything is gone. I forgot to take pictures of the actual food, but here are a couple of shots of the aftermath! The atmosphere was no-nonsense vibe but the waitresses were friendly

Yes, yes & yes! Every time I've come here when visiting Oregon from California in the last 2 1/2 years this place was only serving to-go orders due to the plandemic. So I would only order two pepper-salted calamari orders.I'm happy to say this summer I got to come by when they're doing indoor seating again! The lady at the front greeted us immediately as we walked in with a smile and seated us at our table. All of the employees seemed to be happy and grateful that they get to serve customers inside again! The ambience is still the same as it was before, old school family owned Chinese restaurant. And everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! I want to go back before we go back home to California this Sunday lol

Before the pandemic, this was our go to place for squid. Now, the quality has dropped but may be better eating in. Post pandemic, we have only gotten takeout.

I dont know why my family likes to come here for celebrations. It's someone's bday, let's go to Thien Hong. Someone graduated, let's go to Thien Hong. There's always a bug in the food. Every. Single. Time. This last visit, the fly was in our wonton soup. The best thing on their menu is the pepper salted squid/calamari. Everything else is meh. I would like to stop coming here, but there will always be some kind of celebration that pulls me back. Also, it was so random that they were selling slime at the front counter lol.

I've going to this place for 31 years. Can't you believe that! Any food you order is pretty much good. Most favorite #1 item people or just me go for is the Salt and Pepper Squid. It's lightly battered, crispy on the outside, perfect chewiness on the inside. The seasoning is light, not overly salty. My other favorite dishes are the green bean, clay pot, honey walnut shrimp, eggplant hot garlic sauce...and more. The place is pretty updated 5 years ago. Parking areas is very limited but you can also park on the street. The lady is always very nice and sweet to customers. Ambiance is great for lunch, dinner with big/small group or with kids.

We usually tip well when we go out to eat but this time we did not like the fact that they feel entitled to tips.. they circled the amount of tip they should get and write in your total for you on the receipt. Tips are earned. The service wasn't great either.
