Awesome chili. The staff was kind and considerate of me having a cold and recommended the corn bread and beef chili.

Today Portland has a shortage of restaurant workers; front of house and back of house.Stone Soup is a cafe training up homeless individuals for the restaurant industry. It's a 4 week program followed by an internship at local restaurants and groceries. They have attracted collaborators from some of Portland's top restaurants. The menu, lunch now, and a few days open for happy hour, is simple, and the quality is high: soups, salads, sandwiches, and dessert.I had the gazpacho and the Greek salad. The gazpacho was blendered to smooth, lightly spiced and accompanied good quality Grand Central toasted bread. The Greek salad had peak Summer tomatoes, arugula, crunchy cucumbers and chunk feta. The restaurant is counter service, and diners collect their own utensils and iced lemon water. Stone Soup is in the old Gilt space, which was dark and home to the famous Portlandia Colin the Chicken. Now it's light, with natural fir floors, maple tabletops, a bar, windows all around, and WiFi. They can do private dinners and cater too. Did I say that the food is very reasonably priced, and that the entire project is a nonprofit?Stone Soup is a beautiful classic story found in many cultures. And it's a restaurant with a cause.

I fell in love with the idea of Stone Soup when KGW was doing a weekly news piece on them so I had to go check them out in person. Everything about Stone Soup is delightful! The restaurant is spacious and bright with an eclectic mix of chairs with plaques on it from the Portland restaurant that sponsored the chairs. The staff s attentive and friendly. Craig is usually at the front counter taking orders and always willing to share the story of Stone Soup. The support and collaboration from other Portland restaurants is heartwarming. And the food is absolutely fabulous!! Stone Soup is closed to the public for 3 months due to COVID-19 - during this time they are providing meals to 500 unhoused men and women with the help of other local partner restaurants. I look forward to Stone Soup re-opening to the public and the time that I can enjoy another meal there. They also offer private events and one of these days I would love to host one! In the meantime I plan on supporting them financially both in direct monetary contribution and in choosing them as my Amazon smile recipient! Here's the link to the news story. https://www.kgw.com/article/news/local/gresham/portlands-stone-soup-teaches-kitchen-skills-homeless/283-22930c05-b3a3-462e-bc39-b141d2e0cfa2

I'm in the middle of a bowl of curry squash soup and veggie flatbread and it's so delicious I had to stop mid-way to post... the flavors are complex and inventive. I'm in heaven. The space is open and airy - would be great for groups or families, lunch meetings etc. The staff is super friendly and attentive. 100% will be here again (tomorrow?) and will bring friends.

I love the concept behind Stone Soup and the shared goal to help homeless individuals stand on their own two feet while solving a restaurant need as well. The food is well prepared and consistent. The "NY penicilin" - chicken soup was flavorful and satisfying. Keep up the great work!

What an incredible business and group of people. Truly what Portland is about: community, food and giving back. Every chef is a hard working soul who loves what they do. You couldn't ask for better ingredients for your food.

Just had a really great lunch (to-go) from Stone Soup. I ordered a cup of New York Penicillin, their take on chicken noodle, and a small not-so-simple-salad with vinaigrette dressing - you also have the option of ranch. It was a filling and healthy $8 meal. I liked that the soup had lots of herbs in it, and the salad was soooo good, much better than lunches I usually make at the salad bar. The staff was lovely as well!

Perfect culmination of food, service and mission. We had a corporate dinner here that was outstanding. Craig and his staff are very professional and create flavorful dishes for a great cause, as well as far more affordable than any other private dining option downtown.
