Surprisingly tasty sushi at a fair price.During our last visit our group had the hamachi roll, the eel and avocado roll, the crunchy roll, the rainbow roll, and Sea & River's combo special the Van Lunch (spicy tuna roll, California roll, and spicy salmon roll). The crunchy roll was a big hit, and we all wished we had ordered another eel and avocado roll. Friendly service. Delicious food, carefully made and presented.Sea & River Sushi & Burmese Grill is located at the Rocket Empire Machine on NE Glisan, one of five restaurants in the Montavilla food hall. Outdoor seating.

My pug and I enjoy having lunch on sunny days at Sea & River Sushi because they have a lovely covered outdoor seating area where dogs are allowed. The picnic tables are well made and comfortable, and covered in oil cloth so they are easy to keep clean. Although Glisan is a busy street, the L-shaped courtyard provides distance from the traffic and creates a pleasant enclave. The food is always fresh and delicious at Sea & River! My favorites include unagi nigiri, the albacore tuna maki, and the dragon roll. They deserve an unexpected A++++ for presentation because their dishes are often served with orchids and other special touches. Anyone who pays extra attention to detail like this always receives my respect and admiration. An interesting detail that caught my attention is how delicious the miso soup is. Miso is one of those side dishes that is often an afterthought, prepared using "add water and stir" ingredients. The miso soup at Sea & River is divine... probably one of the best I've ordered in the area. The large pieces of tofu are fresh and tender, and practically disolve in your mouth. The broth is not overly salty, and has a subtle layering of flavors that unfold as you work your way through the bowl. Whatever their secret is, I'm a fan! I'm very happy to have found a special place I can share with my best friend within walking distance of my home. Please tell your friends and neighbors about Sea & River Sushi & Burmese Grill so the restaurant can continue serving our neighborhood.

Fantastic restaurant and welcome addition to the growing Montavilla food scene. Since opening a few months ago I am a regular 3-4 times a week and have NEVER been disappointed. Everything that I have tried ranging from the tea leaf salad, nigiris, curries and porridge are absolutely top notch. Everything is carefully crafted and really fresh. For example, they only use REAL crab and they have toro on the menu. Beyond the great cuisine, It is a great experience from the moment you walk up. They have very attentive and thoughtful service and everything I have tried I have loved. The nigiri salmon is like butter.....Highly recommend. Plus, grabbing a beer/cider/wine at Gigantic while waiting for your food isn't a bad experience either. Ps, if you show up on a slow day you may be lucky enough to hear the sushi chef (sam) playing guitar :)

Not trying to be a debbie downer but this place was a disappointment. I wanted to give it a fair assessment so we ordered both Japanese and Burmese. This is a cute spot located in a building shared with other establishments. We came early on a Sunday and perhaps it was too early because he was still setting up and the food took kinda long to come out. The fish/sushi was alright. It wasn't the freshest as I've had nor was it bad. Mediocre and the rice with it was just so so. Again, not trying to compare this place to restaurants, but I really had expectations it was going to be just as good. Lastly, the tea leaf salad came out after. It had a very strange taste to it. I've had many tea leaf salads in my past life and this was the first time I felt like I could not finish it. It didn't taste correct and it was lacking that tea aroma it usually had. Also, a lot of the ingredients did not seem correct or at least as I remembered it to be. Perhaps it was a different style, but regardless, we were unable to finish it. I hope they get better and maybe hire another person to help out.

Love to go here when I think of it, but stopped in for lunch the other day, Hamachi nigiri were pretty small pieces, the salmon hand roll was fine, BUT the scallops were still mostly frozen, which is a real put-off as far as attention to detail goes. Hope for better next time.

Don't eat the shrimp. I got the tempura roll. They don't cook it long enough and they don't take out the turd vain. That holds all the bacteria. I only noticed on my last bite. On the last bite I saw the shrimp was still grey and they didn't cut the turd vain out. I thought my immune system would be alright. Now I spent the last 2 days near the toilet. In order for me to report then I needed to go to a doctor but I know what I ate. I know I have food poisoning and this was the last thing I ate. I'm really glad my wife didn't try it. She has an immune system disease and this would have sent her to the hospital. I have now spent 2 days out of work. There sushi isn't that good. I got a Californa roll and it was bad. It was made with a crab paste. It was like the rolls you get at the super market. You can get better sushi at a cheaper price for the same quality at Fred Myers in Hollywood. And if they get you sick they will refund you. When I called this place and told them they didn't cook the shrimp long enough they told me no one has said this before. Well. I let the health department know about my complaint. Let's see if I'm the first one. It's going to be awhile before I have sushi again and I don't think I will ever have shrimp in my sushi ever again thanks to this place. There are sushi carts that have way better food then this place. Try one of them. Not this place.

Sea & River Sushi shares nice outdoor seating with a few other restaurants. The sushi here tastes fresh and balanced. I often get 2 nigiri combined with a roll, and the fills me up. The salmon is very buttery, which I love. Some rolls that I have enjoyed: Dragon roll, Tempura Shrimp Sushi, Crunchy The only thing that disappointed me thus far were the Baked mussels, which I found to be very salty. The dinner combo is a great deal, but I would only recommend it if you have a very high spiciness tolerance. I struggled to eat it due to how spicy it was. My friend ordered the tea leaf salad, and she mentioned that she was disappointed compared to what she's used to getting at her local Burmese restaurants where she moved from. Overall, I recommend Sea & River Sushi for their nigiri and rolls. It's my favorite sushi place that I've tried in Portland so far.

Love visiting here for sushi... super portions, always friendly, and great covered patio to sit and relax while dining. Highly recommended gem, don't let the tucked away location fool you. I always get the Van's Combo and have never been unhappy about it!
