That was my first time there so I experienced some intricately delicious food. It's a little different because you pick out the food you want then you have to pay for it but it's well worth it. I kid you not it's amazing.

We had a variety of dishes during our visit, including their fried rice, the Mala Xiang Guo (spicy dry pot), and the Mala Hong Tang (Korean-style soup-based Malatang). While both Mala dishes were enjoyable, I preferred the dry pot, which had a flavorful Szechuan stir-fry taste. We also tried the Guobaorou, a deep-fried pork sirloin dish reminiscent of the Korean Tang Su Yuk, served with a sweet and sour sauce. The mayo mini Chinese pancakes were a hit with the kids, as were the fried rice and deep-fried pork. However, we were a bit disappointed with the peas in the fried rice. They seemed off, with a sour taste and smell that suggested they weren't fresh, although the staff assured us otherwise. Next time, we'll likely skip the peas on the fried rice and the soup-based dish and go for the stir-fried dry pot instead.

I'm with Josh again and our specialty is wandering and finding closed food places that pique our interest. We tried a few other Asian food places but they were closed for the Fourth of July weekend but then we found this place. I have never had a hot pot style of food in my life but the servers here made it so easy and appealing. I ended up with an amalgamation of a bunch of great food highlighted by baby corn and meat ofc. Man I love meat, happy post pride month everyone. The broth was pretty, it was the color of those Chinese oranges that you see on Instagram that are extremely juicy but you're like "I should call her". Overall with a nice location and noise that was pleasant and only interrupted by the sounds of the mother daughter duo that were like Sadio Mane and Mo Salah in 2019. I'd give this place a try if you are a young jit like me looking for your first foray into malatang or hot pot style foods.

Not too bad !! It near our hotel and we are starving , since you can pick whatever veggies at the self serve bar , I guess we should self control a little bit more...... we only try the spicy level one , I can't really tell how spicy other level will be , at least level one is doable nit too overwhelming, their service is in the spot , overall is a good place

Soup and spicy (or mild) lovers unite! I was surprised to find this spot tucked around the corner from NW 23rd. I often find myself meandering the area to scout new bites to try and was not expecting to find this Korean-Chinese customizable soup/stir fry spot! There's a self-serve bar of veggies, seafood, and different noodles where you can choose which toppings/add-ins you want into your malatang (soup) or mala xiangguo (stir fry). You also customize which spice level you would like your dish at (scale of 0-5) and my sister who is big spice lovers got a level 2 and was satisfied spice wise already! I personally got a level of 1, and it was perfect for me (I can chug a full water bottle while eating hot Cheetos lol). After the self-serve bar you weigh your bowl and can choose whether or not you also want to add pork or beef in your dish)The staff are so polite and help guide you through the ordering process, on top of any appetizers (a la carte) items that you can add to your meal! I also love the fact that they have a private lot (only 4 spots I believe, but in this area- that's gold!)

I was on my way to a dumpling house in the neighborhood but after 7 minutes of searching for parking in the pouring rain, I gave up. Fate put me in front of this Korean specialty place and it had a parking lot! so I stopped. This used to be a sushi joint, one more in a long line of okay sushi spots in Portland but it is now a sleek, clean, Korean soup kitchen. Sort of like a Mongolian grill but so much better. You choose the things you want from a long line of familiar, and some less (unless you are an aficionado of Korean cuisine, perhaps) and place them in a stainless steel bowl using clean stainless tongs I chose bok choy, bean sprouts, black mushroom, bitter melon, long bean, spinach, parsley, bamboo shoot and a couple of veggies I don't know the name of. I added extremely fresh raw large shrimp for my protein from an array of things I can only guess at, though I recognized squid, bacon rolls, pork balls, and tofu. You can then ask the chef to add pork belly, lamb, or beef if you want. i did not. They weigh it and take it away. I chose stir fry instead of soup because i'd been eating homemade soup for two days. It was returned to my table piping hot by a smiling, friendly young Korean woman, seasoned beautifully with sesame oul, chilis, garlic, perhaps a splash of cooking wine, and seasoned peanuts. Delicious. A man across the way from me went with the soup version and slurped happily away at his bowl. Korean pop music played at a reasonable volume, upbeat. It was not inexpensive. My stir fry lunch set me back $22. But it was definitely fresh, tasty, and its unlike any place else in Portland I know of.

I have come here so many time since opening and it is a favorite. There's no place in Portland that does it quite like them, and they do malatang VERY well. After walking in and being directed to your table, you're free to get up and make your way to the selection bar to decide what items you want in either a soup base or a stir-fry. I always like the switch it up, but I love how their bar area is always kept so clean and the items are always very fresh (veggies are washed well!). I honestly prefer the spicy stir fry but even their no spice (and you can get it with spice if you want) soup broth, it is so comforting and delicious. I cannot spread how good this place is nor how kind and accommodating the staff is; you have to go check it out yourself!Plus! There's al carte items that, while I have not yet tried, look so delicious, as well as a sauce bar!

Nestled in a busy street, this location has a small dedicated parking lot for its customers. The interior was quite spacious and clean. The service was quite friendly and helpful when we had questions about the items at the self-serve bar, where you can select your preferred ingredients from an array of meats, seafood, vegetables, tofu, and noodles. All of the ingredients looked and tasted fresh. The spice level is customizable and you can choose to make it as a Mala hot pot or a stir fry. The ingredients soaked up the rich, spicy broth and ignited my taste buds with a numbing sensation. The stir fry does cost a bit more but it was tasty as well! They charge by weight so you can end up with an unexpected bill.

Eh, probably one and done for me as nothing wowed. The thinly cut beef was the standout. I don't quite get the allure, hasn't Chang's been doing this for decades?Kudos to the busser/server who moves around the dining area with lightening speed. However, she ran into a customer with her cart and looked frazzled. Just chill as your aggressive mobility probably only saved seconds.Good for the neighborhood, I hope they prosper.

First time trying malatang and it was so delicious! You get to pick your fillings from a buffet of veggies, herbs, noodles, and fish cakes. There is a wide variety to choose from. It's priced by weight so grab as much as you want to pay. They do either mala hongtang (soup broth) or mala xiang guo (stir fry) and you can choose your spice level. On the menu it says the stir fry tends to be more spicy, so keep that in mind.I went with the Mala Hongtang at Medium Hot spice level. I was afraid it was going to be too spicy, but it was actually just right! The broth has a creaminess that balances the spice, so the flavor is vibrant. I did load up on my fillings but I was able to finish with a full and satisfied belly. Will definitely return when I'm in the area!
