My partner and I went to Papa's for his birthday. I had been there and only eaten desserts in the past so we decided to have dinner too. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our server was amazing. She helped me on my wine pairing with the Salmon entree'. The food was so good. I expected it to be and wasn't disappointed. We got the clams and baguette for starters. Followed by the risotto and salmon. The food was well seasoned and very tasty. For dessert my partner got the Tuxedo Mint chocolate cake and I went with the "Passion". Each one me was epic. If you love sweets this is the place to go. The restaurant is very cozy and intimate. We will be back sooner than later.

A group of approximately 15 women gathered to celebrate a family member's upcoming nuptials. We arrived at 11:30 am, and I was concerned our gathering was set up on the infamous patio, with the plastic-covered area.Read the review from Phillipa below, in which she mentions the extreme heat she encountered on July 8. That pretty much describes our situation today. The water was served with not one ice cube, and was basically warm. Food was decent, a curry chicken salad and also a fondue, which I noticed no one ate. It was very heavy on bleu cheese--which I love--but I held back as only a few small pieces of bread were served with it. At 2:30 pm, I went inside as I felt like I was having heat exhaustion. Only two tables inside were in use. I sat at a small table for two, and asked for my check, two desserts to take home, and an iced coffee. This took forever--but before that was taken care of, a woman came up to me, glared and snapped, "You have to move, because I'm seating people here." The two men she seated looked at me and mouthed, "oh, my god!" as they could see there were other tables. I asked permission to move to another table and she said yes. Really negative, very unhospitable. I sat for a few minutes, long enough for two of the young women in our party to come in to request the cake they ordered for the event, and a knife and boxes to send some home, as it was much too hot and people weren't feeling well enough to stay longer.Initially, our server said there would be a plating and boxing fee of five dollars per serving--50 dollars to cut the cake!~--we asked for a butter knife and to-go boxes, and finally were accommodated. Not without quite a bit of push back. Surprising.Back outside into the heat we went, to pack up and leave. One of the men who was seated at the table where I'd been recovered from heat exhaustion came out to tell me he planned to complain to the manager---I quipped, "The rude one probably IS the manager!" and guess what! Kylie! Or Kaylie. Look for the dark-haired trim woman with the sour-puss face! He's going to find someone to complain to. Look, Papa Haydn's, if you plan to serve warm water on an extremely hot day, and then have no regard or care for clients who get heat exhaustion on your patio--with NO air con or fans--you should probably shut down in the summer. The heat? we can live with that. The inconsideration and lack of human empathy? Not so much. Please do better. Note: we got the lemon chiffon cake, the peanut butter, and the Italian 'sweet bite' dessert. Much sweeter than some of the service today.

Our happy hour at the Papa Haydn in Sellwood occurred on the hottest day of the year. Due to the size of our party, we were seated on the patio. Despite the temperature hovering at 100, they placed us in seats directly under transparent plastic, a location that only got worse as the sun lowered and shone directly onto us between the roof and the gap in the hedge. Every other table except ours was empty and we asked our server if we could move under an umbrella a bit further out, as it would at least block the sun. He hesitated, said he would ask someone inside, and then came back and told us no. Of the maybe 8 bottles of water it took to keep us from sheer misery, only a couple had ice in them. The silverware was almost too hot to handle. We ordered 5 appetizers and when we asked for more sliced toast for our various pates, we were given (after a 15-20 minute wait), 3 thin slices of toast for our entire table. I came away feeling like the staff lacked empathy and had an indifferent outlook towards it's customers. There are so many good restaurants in PDX. I'll pass on this one in future.

Didn't have reservations on a Sunday night but the four of us got seated right away. We sat on the patio being as it was a nice evening. We got served wine and cocktails soon after and ordered the fondue tray and bread and garlic butter for appetizers. It was all pretty tasty. Got the risotto which was outstanding on flavor! In contrast, the fettuccine was the tiniest bit bland. The steak frites was plentiful but not quite medium rare as requested. The desserts were the highlight! Loved every one of them, Boccone Dolce, Cremeux for Two, Cafe au Chocolate and Mint Tuxedo Cake. We have to try several because we miss our all time favorite Autumn Meringue. Celebrating two of our birthdays, we got a special surprise writing on our plates with a candle. We had an awesome experience. Can't wait to visit the area again!

Years ago I lived within walking distance of Papa Hayden's and would stop here regularly for an after dinner dessert or happy hour. Had dinner recently for the first time in a while and am happy to report that the entrees, cocktails and dessert were all great! I had the pork chop with fingerling potatoes, green beans and local chanterelle mushrooms. Server was very charming and had nearly perfect timing! Will be going back sometime soon!

Came here during their 45th anniversary month and they had wonderful deals including several savory dishes worth $12 and 3 desserts worth $7 each as a nice throw back menu. The food was wonderful and there was also excellent service. You can't go wrong with their desserts. Their dessert case is absolutely the best thing in the restaurant, it's gorgeous!

This is one of my favorite restaurants for delicious desserts! They make everything in-house and have been a Sellwood staple since 1978. I even purchased my wedding cake from them.We stopped in to grab a variety of desserts for a gathering we were having at our home. The staff was super friendly and helpful. They were having issues with their credit card machine but were very apologetic. We ended up ordering a piece of the lemon chiffon cake, German chocolate cake, raspberry gateau, lemon curd tart, and marionberry cheesecake. They were all absolutely delicious!I would highly recommend this establishment for desserts. They have a nice variety. You won't be disappointed!

Such yummy desserts! My mom and I went to celebrate wedding dress shopping with a treat. I was torn between raspberry gateaux and German chocolate cake but our server helped me choose. It was very rich and tasty but the cake part was a little dry.

First time at Papa Haydns, a PDX staple since 1978. Made reservations and was promptly seated. Our server Justin immediately greeted us and promptly took our drink and appetizer order. The fondue appetizer was excellent, as were the main course salads and burgers. All were very tasty and well proportioned. The staff was professional and friendly. The dessert selection at Papa Haydns is excellent and a must see even if you don't do a meal. Overall, it is a worthwhile stop in the Sellwood area of Portland.
