This place is in a privileged location in the city, and it exudes old time charm with a kind of retro decoration, that could land in an "old time feeling, (a bit like a film set), but has enough updates to still bring it to the present day. This old time is Italian American film in the 70s --In a nostalgic way, it gives off the vibes that an established Italian (American) place in the middle of downtown should give. The menu is classic and maybe that's one of its strengths and downfalls... it has all the classic stuff, but completely lacks creativity. The complementary bread is quite tasty and maid in house, which was fun. They also make all their mozzarella, so appetizers and mozzarella dishes are worth a try.The portions are certainly generous and filling. The food was fine- not great. I have nothing extraordinary, or really remarkable to say about my chicken in marsala wine sauce with mushrooms and a side of pasta... and it's pricey for sure. You are paying to eat downtown. But what moved this review from three stars to four was the service. All the people we encountered were working hard, pleasant, attentive, and trying to create the best possible experience for their guests, so that fourth star is because of them.

The wine and cocktails were fine. I had a reservation, and upon arrival, we were immediately greeted with hostility and poor service. We initially planned to dine in but quickly decided against it due to the server's poor demeanor and unwelcoming attitude. We did not end up ordering any food, but the menu items seemed overpriced. My partner and I have always passed by Mama Mia on our way to work and have wanted to visit for some time. It's a shame how disappointing the experience was, and because of this, I don't believe we will return. The establishment absolutely needs major improvements in service quality and staff training. Additionally, the ambiance could use quite a bit of work. You know it's problematic when the service is so bad it makes you want to leave. This may be harsh, but it's honest.

Great wine list good service but the food just is just ok. All the recommended items are super heavy. I asked for something light and the scampi came out super buttery. Shrimp and scallops were fresh though.

It had been years since I visited Mama Mia but had good memories of my meals there. The decor and staff are part of the draw; always delivering a great experience. I'm in search of the best PDX lasagna and sampled Mama's version for the list. I would give it a 3.5 as it was good but not memorable. That said, the wine and bread were memorable compliments.

Such a cute vintage restaurant. Staff was friendly. The food was decent, it took close to 30 min to come out after ordering which I guess means it's fresh.

Scratch kitchen! Homemade dishes! Veal Marsala and Eggplant parm - solid! Service efficient and friendly! Very beautiful inside with old school crystal chandeliers and black wrought iron pedestal tables with marble finish on the top. Great hidden gem!

One of my favorite spots in Portland overall. What made this a 5 star visit was notOnly the food, but the service of the manager. We arrived 30 minutes early for our 7:15 reservation and they were somewhat busy, so we had to wait for our seating. At first we were seated at a round table for 4, which makes it awkward for a party of 2. I spoke with the manager and he promptly seated us in a traditional window seat which made it better for conversation. For the rest of our visit he was attentive, checked on us, and gave the type of service that makes you return over and over again. Thanks for this great experience, as sometimes you think customer service is dead in this day and age. The food as usual was amazing, and each item was fresh and prepared perfectly. Mama Mia is a standout establish in Portland's restaurant space, and make sure you give them a try. We did garlic bread, clams,Caesar salad, and 2 orders of bolognese. Don't miss the miracle.GREAT JOB WITH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE‼‼‼

The pasta was fresh with just the right amount of sauce. The prawns were plump, tender, and crisp. It was a busy night, the server was apologetic for not being attentive, but I thought it was just fine. I look forward to coming back the next time I am in Portland!
